Sandi Toksvig slams anti-trans bigots ‘claiming to be radical feminists’ (msn.com)

"I could weep. I don’t get it. It’s beyond me"

Yeah Sandi, I don't get it either.
How is it possible that men can say they are women and have unfettered access to females in their safe spaces?
How is it possible that we are medicating children against puberty?
How it is possible that a woman can be raped on a female hospital ward by a man claiming to be a woman and then gaslighted to be told a man was not on the ward?
How is it possible that men are claiming titles, sponsorships and medals in women's sports?
How is it possible women and females are being literally erased from so many spheres of life, including health/medicine and marketing campaigns? How come the same isn't happening to males?

As a lesbian do you like "lady penis"?
Or do you actually know that men remain men whatever surgeries they may have had, and are just on the "be kind" train?

Have you even THOUGHT about the issues this ideology ushers in?

Actually you don't need to answer that.
It's obvious.

She's probably afraid of being hound by the trans-lobby then cancelled, which seems to be what happens to those who put their head above the parapet. Not everyone has courage - there is probably a reason why she has made a career in light entertainment - because it is cosy and nice.

turbonerd · 23/11/2023 15:22

Yes, Sandi, you should weep.
It is impossible to understand why men want their wants to Trump women’s needs. Quite impossible and very, very sad that these men can not see that they are compromising women’s wellbeing, dignity and SAFETY.

Sandi Toksvig has created a lucrative niche as being cosy, kind and inclusive. She's part of that core of uber-privileged luvvies - Stephen Fry, Emma Thompson, Kenneth Branagh etc - who met in the Cambridge Footlights and who have spent their lives in the cushioned bubble of the upper echelons of the media and arts, where the likes of Izzard are feted and wept over for their bravery. They know NOTHING of the lives of women sharing prison cells and spaces with violent men with female pronouns, or young girls in provincial towns who self-exclude from their football team or swimming group or gym because they don't feel safe when males join, or victims of rape who are forced to call their rapists 'she'.

Entitlement is stamped right the way through Sandi and her cronies, like sticks of rock. (What's that Sandi? You want to get paid to go on exclusive mini-breaks with fellow slebs for the telly? No problem!) No wonder she sympathises more with those who use magical thinking and make believe to put on a public front beneath a banner of #bekind than those women who live in fear, either of physical threat or loss of livelihood for speaking up. Life isn't like the GBBO tent or a Richard Curtis film for the majority of us.

I think if you started digging today, and carried on digging until you reached Australia, you still wouldn't have matched the depth of the contempt I have for handmaidens like Sandi Toksvig.

This.
She's a despicable woman.

itsmylife7 · 23/11/2023 15:55

Fuck off Sandi.

Lottapianos · 23/11/2023 16:00

Good post @WinterTrees . Having a cozy, insulated, comfortable middle class life is not something to be ashamed of, but you do need to make sure that you're not going around pontificating about stuff you don't understand in the slightest

Novina · 23/11/2023 16:00

More generous interpretation: she hasn't engaged her brain enough to realise that in some situations male inclusion means female exclusion.

Less generous interpretation: it's not in her interests to be seen to understand the (glaringly obvious) issues.

Froodwithatowel · 23/11/2023 16:02

It's about as stupidly tone deaf as saying "I don't understand why people just don't put their heating on if they're cold".

UnremarkableBeasts · 23/11/2023 16:05

This is all about Sandi marketing herself as kind and fluffy and not like those nasty witches.

“I could weep. I don’t get it. It’s beyond me,” the former Great British Bake Off host said, “When the feminist movement started in the 60s and 70s, lesbians were often excluded, because we were told that we would make the movement less palatable."
“I have been excluded myself, so how could I do that to someone else? It fills me with rage.”
But it's not the same thing is it?

It’s also not true. Lesbians were at the heart of the women’s liberation movement in the 1970s and beyond, both as individuals and in lesbian groups. The WLM also strongly supported gay rights.

We feminists were intensely unpalatable to many people. We demanded our rights. We did not ask politely if we could have a little share. I think the US movement had more of a ‘respectable’ wing, but it wasn’t big over here.

As feminism is a fight for women’s rights, some women join to fight for their own rights and may not be sympathetic to other women’s needs.

I don’t doubt some lesbians encountered unfriendly women, just as I did. We were a gobby crowd and, as in any group of people, some of us didn’t like others.

But of the many lesbians I met and grew close to, none ever said they felt excluded by feminism.

CorruptedCauldron · 23/11/2023 16:10

I’ve always liked Sandi and it is infuriating that she is being so blinkered on this issue. I think she’s a privileged luvvie, hobnobbing with a diverse array of middle-class gender-believers who are all really lovely and right-on and inclusive. How could anyone be so mean to such lovely showbiz people like harmless, funny, cuddly Eddie Suzy Izzard?

So Sandi’s happy to redefine womanhood as a non-biological concept; to share single-sex intimate spaces with males; to open up women’s sports and prize categories to anyone who says they’re a woman; to open up lesbian dating nights to males; to allow confused children to be encouraged in their belief that they may be in the wrong body, and the list goes on.

Bully for you Sandi, that’s great that you don’t mind and it’s not a problem for you. How fabulous. But you don’t get to decide for other women what they should accept from gender ideology. And you sure as hell don’t get to condemn women who do not share your views.

Many women do not enjoy the privilege you have, Sandi. They may need rape crisis counselling; a domestic abuse refuge; they may even be in prison. Stop throwing vulnerable women under the bus in the name of “kindness”.

Bouffe · 23/11/2023 16:12

@WinterTrees I was once given a ticket to attend a show where she was promoting her book. I had no idea that her parents were at the BBC and her dad was a famous figure in Danish broadcasting. She'd managed to conceal the privilege rather well. No wonder she walked through so many doors that were closed to others.

She lost a fair few fans a long time ago, apparently, at a lesbian book fair in York (Libertas festival, anyone?) when she walked onto the dais, looked along the front few rows into which were crammed an awful lot of solidly built dykes, and announced she couldn't bear fat legs and fat knees and found them really repulsive. Cue almost the entire audience looking down at their solid thighs and knees and then incredulously back at Sandy on her own sturdily built wee legs. The friend who was there said she suddenly realised that Sandi isn't a woman-friendly-woman. She happens to be a lesbian but she's not on the side of other lesbians.

Lottapianos · 23/11/2023 13:37

This from one of the founders of the Women's Equality Party. FFS Sandi, stop the hand wringing and stop pretending to be stupid 🙄

Don't get me started on that lot of nonsense.

It wasn't big clever or brave starting a women's equality party in the UK. Starting it in Saudi would have been.

Tabitha005 · 23/11/2023 16:13

@WinterTrees and @CorruptedCauldron - both of you nailed it 100%

Of all the women who've been captured by the trans lobby, Sandi's capitulation disappoints me the most. I always thought she was smarter than that but, as you've both said, living in a lovely cosy insulated luvvie bubble has absolutely turned her into someone actually quite dim.

ValerieDoonican · 23/11/2023 16:15

I'm about the same age as Sandi, and my initial experience with feminism in the 80s was wondering if I was "feminst enough" because I am (largely) straight. In my corner of East London feminism, lesbians were very much at the forefront.

Maybe her lot of feminists were somewhat homophobic, whoever they were, but I don't remember anything like that at all .

Melroses · 23/11/2023 16:27

Apollo441 · 23/11/2023 15:09

What revisionist shit is this? Claiming lesbians were excluded from the feminist movement in the 60's and 70's? Utter bollocks. They were at the forefront of the movement as you bloody well know Sandy. How else did feminist garner the slander of all being lesbians?
Is there nothing you won't say or no lie you won't tell to support this poisonous ideology?

This ^

Excluded from what, Sandi. That's the question you ought to ask yourself.
