Buying my milk and the radio announces that co op are supporting trans awareness or trans people who’ve died in glorious fight for freedom or some such week. What?! Why?! Didn’t we just have trans month and trans visibility day and whatever. I don’t recall them celebrating disabled people or black history I . Just. Want. Milk.

Milk without a side order of social engineering? Was it Co-op's radio and a Co-op store?

Perhaps it's the Co-op's C21st implementation of its original mission?

is there a reason this upsets you? You can have issues with sharing toilets or the meaning of trans, whatever, but still be respectful that trans people exist and have high suicide rates 😳 you can still have some empathy

catduckgoose · 17/11/2023 20:06

When can we have a misogyny awareness month?

It's not the job of a bloody shop to tell me how to think.

That alone pisses me off.

ChishiyaBat · 17/11/2023 20:16

@Newsenmum it's got fuck all to do with buying a pint of milk though and that's the point! Whatever empathy I had left is slowly turning to indifference with it being constantly rammed down our throats every day and everywhere!

Agrona · 17/11/2023 20:24

The same type of empathy that trans activists have for women? Threats of violence? Being told to die? Demanding acceptance without exception?

Please do not try to guilt women.

People who think of themselves as trans certainly exist. It doesn't follow that we all agree that trans is a thing in itself. The idea of being trans is the idea that there is something to being a woman or a man that is not based on biology. Many of us would say that if such a thing is not based on biology, it can only be based on sexist stereotypes. This is something we do not support.

What makes it appropriate for a shop to give such statements? Women exist. Between one and two women are killed every week in the UK by their current or previous male partners. Would it be appropriate for shops to announce at shoppers that the safety of women is important and that the shop supports women's rights and condemns the murder of women? Why isn't Co-Op doing that?

  1. The suicide claims are often based on self-reported feelings, not actual acts.
  2. It's never NOT either Trans something, or about to be.
  3. Women get one lousy day a year and it's usually hijacked by men in dresses.
TropDrôle · 17/11/2023 20:38

DH is a diversity and inclusion officer for his department in the company he works for. He joined so that he could stop them converting all of the women’s toilets to unisex.

Today they put the pride flag out and the 3 trans women who are in the company made a speech. They talked about Alan Turing (DH is in tech) and about how he was pushed to suicide.

DH was livid and had to stop himself interrupting to say that Alan Turing was gay. Not trans. DD is gay so DH is particularly defensive of keeping the T and LGB separate.

ChishiyaBat · 17/11/2023 20:38

I said slowly when I meant quickly😂

BlessedKali · 17/11/2023 20:40

yeah I am sick of the politicisation of everywhere. Just fuck off and allow us to exist without tryingo make us think a certain way.

Feckedupbundle · 17/11/2023 20:43

I stopped using the Co-op years ago, when they refused to pay farmers the cost of producing milk. They were all about fair trade, until it was on their doorstep.
Bunch of canting hypocrites.

ParanoidJo · 17/11/2023 20:43

Why aren’t more stores/companies pro women? If they really want to stand out / virtue signal / be right on PLUS appeal to half the population, that’s what they should do. Wow. I didn’t realise how clever I was, til then.

RethinkingLife · 17/11/2023 20:59

I feel that your DH and I would agree that the ignorance and indifference to the reality of history is breathtaking.I've never forgotten the claim that Turing was trans and that (I paraphrase) the hormone treatments he was compelled to take were actually him taking cross-sex hormones.

That's a particular horrible example and the author correctly identifies that one enthusiastic baptiser of the dead describes Turing as "one of the first Gay men to go on estrogen"

Turing was given DES as a form of chemical castration - and that was presented as an option to imprisonment.

Alan was prosecuted under the Labouchere Amendment of 1855, a law that made homosexuality (“gross indecency”) a crime. In an arranged plea deal, Alan accepted chemical castration by way of Diethylstilbestrol (DES) in lieu of prison and upon conviction he was stripped of all security clearances and forbidden entry into the United States.

Wasn’t Turing drugged with chem castration drugs (yes same ones…)?

He was. Exactly the same drugs used on children today.

Inamuddle36 · 17/11/2023 22:31

@Newsenmum i can’t speak for OP but the reason an announcement like the one at coop would “upset” me is that it perpetuates a lie. Transgender “remembrance” suggests that trans people are at risk of murder at a greater rate than other people. No matter how you analyse the data, trans people simply are not at greater risk of murder than other people. I think it is also untrue that trans people die by suicide at a greater rate than others who suffer mental health challenges (but I would have to search to find the confirming data).

HoneyButterPopcorn · 17/11/2023 22:33

I don’t know how anyone can make these melodramatic statements without thinking the follow up questions - how many? Where? Who is doing the killing? Why? Stats over time? Comparison with other group numbers? Etc etc etc.

ActualWordSalad · 17/11/2023 22:37

Hang on - the utterly shameful treatment of the gay man Alan Turing has now been co-opted for the trans cause? What the fuck?? Trying to rewrite history as well as destroy science now?

Zampa · 17/11/2023 22:38

The Co-Op next me supports numerous local charities, including the special needs school up the road and another that supports kids with cerebral palsy.

Raising awareness and money for good causes means I'll cross the road to shop in Co-op over the Sainsbury's Local.

Yeah, let's be straightforward. Show me the bodies @Newsenmum, and compare them to murdered women who do not have an awareness week. Show me.

ActualWordSalad · 17/11/2023 22:39

Anyway, to respond to the OP, I agree that it would be far preferable for businesses to not endorse quasi-religious beliefs in the name of looking all nice and kind.

SoggyDoggyWalks · 17/11/2023 22:49

I complained to co-op after I had to do my shopping in our village store listening to the Rolling Stones ‘Under My Thumb’ on co-op radio which includes lovely lyrics such as

“It’s down to me
The difference in the clothes she wears”
and
“Under my thumb
Is a squirming dog who's just had her day”

The man I spoke to really didn’t seem to understand why I had a problem with it and I never received the further response I asked for.

ILikeDungs · 17/11/2023 22:50

And to respond to the OP, all these awareness days, weeks, months, are the determined attempt to prop up the belief in something that is not real. Say it enough times, repeat the mantras, and destroy the reputations of the non-believers, and you can make Trans real!! Also, you win the virtue points.

But Trans is not real. It is made up. You all know this, right?
