A pool player has forfeited her chance to win a top national title in protest at the sport allowing a transgender woman to compete against natal females.

Lynne Pinches packed up her cue and walked off as the final of the Ladies Champions of Champions got under way over the weekend.

Spectators clapped and cheered Pinches’ protest while her opponent, Harriet Haynes, appeared bemused before later picking up the trophy by default.
Pinches had been among a host of top female players to speak out in recent days over transgender women being allowed to compete against them in elite competitions.

I've just tried to dig, but there isn't a pledge button. Is that because there's a stretch target?

There was before, but the screen has changed!

Timefordrama · 08/12/2023 20:16

Hmm, wonder what's happened? I've emailed Crowd Justice, will see what they say.

ArthurbellaScott · 09/12/2023 09:48

Brilliant. Well done that woman.

I can't see any Pledge / Donate button on Crowd Justice on any of my devices today.

Anything further on this?

ATowerOfGiraffes · 09/12/2023 12:02

Their email update via crowd justice says page paused;

Update on Let women play pool!

Thanks to the amazing generosity of our supporters, we've now raised £20,050 and will allow Peter from Doyle and Clayton to begin preparing our discrimination case. We have paused the page and will relaunch if further funding is required but will endeavour to keep you updated as we proceed

NutellaEllaElla · 09/12/2023 12:59

I appreciate them pausing it, I don't like the automatic stretch targets. Raise funds as needed. Unfortunately other people need to do so as well.

Even more evidence of her integrity.

I wondered. If there is a settlement, what happens to the money.

I note that FairPlay for Women are involved, and I really want to see a legal case brought to confirm the principle of dividing sport by biological sex. Would any spare money be carried forward to the next FPW case?

TrainedByCats · 09/12/2023 14:37

I think any Settlements where they have happened have been small and I believe they typically go to those bringing the case. Whilst (hopefully) we’re collectively funding the legal fees through CrowdJustice those funds can only be paid directly for legal fees and there’s a lot of additional costs including lost salary that women bringing the case incur and end up paying themselves

Beside each amount theres an edit option. I always go to the crowdjustice donation option and change it to 0 - let’s me contribute more to the direct cause.

Thanks, if I donate via them again, I'll have a better idea. I didn't want to delete the actual donation, so flapped a bit!

So it seems HH is playing in the current mixed pairs competition. The finals night is next week, and apparently HH is involved, although as far as I know, not been televised so far. I saw Jack Whelan and Emma Cunningham go through tonight and I hope they win it.

duc748 · 11/12/2023 22:52

So my take on this is that the other women players have all agreed to 'play nice' (or, possibly, never thought they had a problem in the first place), bearing in mind the finals are literally on live television. Anyway, we'll see in a week's time.

DinoDays · 12/12/2023 08:32

So the mixed won't be mixed then? Just 2 men against a mixed couple?

If I've got that right, shame on the man playing with HH.

Or is it any sex pair?

duc748 · 12/12/2023 10:41

No, it's a man and a woman. And as I said upthread, the differences are more marginal; it's not a Lia Thomas situation, HH isn't head and shoulders better than the other women players, just competitive with them. Not that that makes it OK.

BezMills · 12/12/2023 10:53

Doesn't matter if HH scraped in or sailed in, HH is still taking a spot that HH has no right to take, and depriving a woman of her spot.

So for the mixed HH is being the man half?

duc748 · 12/12/2023 10:59

I agree, Bez.

I agree with this too.

we simply shouldn’t need to be finding reasons why biological men should not be taking spaces in competitions and in job roles and in any other situation that are reserved for biological women.

I'd assume so,if his partner's a man they're not a mixed pair.

DinoDays · 12/12/2023 12:23

Who's the man he's partnering with??

He's a cheat too then!

I agree, "No," should be all the explanation required.

Villagetoraiseachild · 30/12/2023 03:07

There's a heartwarming short clip on Lynne's Twitter/X in which she walks into her club and gets presented with a replacement trophy and a round of applause.

IcakethereforeIam · 08/01/2024 18:46

Haynes complaining of abuse, that isn't acceptable. The body in charge shouldn't have u-turned. The tw, though, is abiding by the current rules and, by the rules, isn't the one at fault.

Good chunk of the end of the article is given over to Lynn Pinches who seems a genuinely good sport and doesn't deserve to be in this position.

Can't believe he's only in his 30s!

Transgender pool champion Haynes opens up on 'horrific and vile abuse'

Lynne Pinches walked out of her match with transgender player Harriet Haynes last year at the Ladies Champion of Champions national pool tournament in Prestatyn, North Wales.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 08/01/2024 19:19

there was an infuriating article on the BBC news website about this.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/wales/67807719

Interestingly it's been edited since it was published at 1pm today so it's less mad than it was at first. Original version here

<a class="break-all" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20240108130037/www.bbc.co.uk/sport/wales/67807719" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://web.archive.org/web/20240108130037/www.bbc.co.uk/sport/wales/67807719

the ridiculous phrase 'male-born female players' has been got rid of

there's a whole load of stuff about FPFW that wasn't there to start with (I wonder if they complained?), and they made the point that Pinches isn't responsible for what other people do on social media (the original article well and truly implied that she was)

It now says 'In August players were told "only naturally born women would be eligible to play in their ladies' categories"', where previously it said 'Players were told that non-binary and transgender players would be banned from playing against biological females,' which was bollocks 'cos trans men were always free to play against other women (nice to see the beeb forgetting about trans men again).

although it still says 'But Haynes, who transitioned from male to female' ffs. science denying bullshit

interesting that some sanity seems to be prevailing at the beeb though

eta I can't make the wayback machine link work no matter what I do!
