Conversion therapy to be banned - Sunak

Apparently Sunak to add this to the King’s Speech, banning conversion therapies for trans and gay people.

This is a potential nightmare for counsellors/psychotherapists/NHS services who want to explore trans people’s experiences of trauma and other sources of gender dysphoria. It basically means “affirming only” as far as I can tell. This is exactly why this was always a bad idea.

Sunak to push ahead with delayed ban on gay and trans conversion practices

Prime minister to include draft bill banning conversion practices in king’s speech, sources confirm

According to Paul Brand it'll be dropped/won't be in the King's Speech

I hope so @ResisterRex. Might be good for everyone to contact their Conservative MP tonight, ahead of the meeting tomorrow. We need them to hear us.Thanks

RealityFan · 22/10/2023 17:10

Just emailed my local MP, y'know, the one beaten by the lettuce.

bombastix · 22/10/2023 17:21

This was already reported in the Times this morning

RealityFan · 22/10/2023 18:30

There's a real possibility this will fracture the Tories in half, the Crispin Blunt pro ban group v the Miriam Cates anti ban group.

If ever there was proof that trans is a zero sum game, this is it.

They may shake it all about and turn around also.

Sorry. I think this was a political whisper that got out of hand. There is often lots of trailer gossip in the press to test the support for a Bill but it seems this one didn't make the cut.

TooBigForMyBoots · 22/10/2023 16:36

This isn't about the ratio of TRAs. This is about a CURRENT TORY BILL THAT COULD MAKE IT INTO THE KING'S SPEECH!!!

It needs to be stopped NOW. Not after the next GE.

After the next GE it almost certainly won't be possible to stop it.

Well if you want it stopped, you need the Tory party to stop it. Now! And not flip, or flop again.

You're a bit late, Morris. But thanks for your helpful input, anyway.

How do you think they should prevent Labour from passing legislation once they are elected?

Surely whatever Labour does is on them, and perhaps those who vote for them?

Froodwithatowel · 23/10/2023 10:43

Then it would need to go in Labour's manifesto and be openly and thoroughly talked about, including all the sticky and grim bits. In depth. So voters know it isn't a nice, shiny, fluffy, harmless policy that will only do lovely progressive good, and is a bit more of a package of poison wrapped in glitter.

I'm sorry they've bottled it. I would much rather this was dragged out and dissected now, and either sorted out in bill form or permanently abandoned than if/when we have a houseful of happy Labour delusionists being sockpuppeted by Stonewall.

We'll discover the answer to that soon.

May election apparently so we will all find out what parties think sooner than thought.

No decision has been made re the GE date, surely?

bombastix · 23/10/2023 16:39

Very significant polls in Whitehall circles - shows that Sunak is even more unpopular with his target vote if he leaves it any longer than May.

I have had three separate people talk to me about it this morning. Expect uptick in Sunak as a personality vs Starmer and a confrontation on small boats. This wasn't mentioned

RealityFan · 23/10/2023 16:49

For me, I'll never understand why Sunak didn't take on non transparency of gender teaching in schools. Way more chance of success than stopping small boats, massive chance to absolutely challenge Starmer's credentials.

And the right thing to do. Proves he's bad at politics. And a moral coward.

ArabellaScott · 23/10/2023 17:00

a confrontation on small boats

A sort of gladiatorial spectacle? It might be a bit more entertaining than a normal election, I suppose.

bombastix · 23/10/2023 17:03

@ArabellaScott - the relevant Supreme Court judgement will be in by this point.

Btw I don't say trans issues wouldn't feature, but apparently what really gets target voters going is small boats.

Well, whatever floats floating voters' boats, I suppose. Seems a bit niche, but there you go.

TooBigForMyBoots · 23/10/2023 17:23

Small boats? FFS.🤦‍♀️
