New guidance issued on World Menopause Day.

I have not the words.

My employer thinks trans women can go through menopause.

😱

This is up there with the transwoman who wanted to visit the gynaecologist and couldn’t understand why he wouldn’t do examination.

BeethovenNinth · 19/10/2023 07:58

Does that mean “women” don’t exist now? We are just “cisgender”.

i work in finance. We would all laugh at this. It’s about the only good thing about the private finance sector - far too much logical common sense to even try it

Interesting isn't it, how the menopause is making it's way into policy, since men starting saying they can get it. Interesting.

😂😂 this, with fucking bells on.

Yep, OP, can confirm that many charities are tying themselves up like hand-wringing pretzels to be sufficiently ‘inclusive’. It’s made me reconsider my involvement as a volunteer.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 19/10/2023 08:15

You know what. I've got endometriosis and the awareness of that is really bad but apparently trans women can get that as well 🙄

Fuckwit sector. (Apparently.)

Charity.

Ah. I think third sector and charity seem very keen on this stuff.

Pips Bunce would suggest otherwise.

Funnily enough we had a menopause policy issued recentky at work, I just checked and it says this which is fair enough “Most women will experience menopause at some point during their life. Menopause can also impact people who may not identify as female, such as trans and non-binary people”

I think that statement is fine - it includes those it needs to, excludes those who aren’t relevant, and caters for the relevant special labels of some. Wish there was more of this type of language.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 19/10/2023 09:08

I've just check my employer's intranet site about menopause and it's chock full of references to women Grin 'She' and 'her' all over the place. It even mentions that if a woman has had a hysterectomy, she will go through menopause early as a result. Because, you know, she's still a woman. Not a single instance of 'cis' to be found. It's like going back in time.

BettyFilous · 19/10/2023 09:15

PermanentTemporary · 18/10/2023 23:26

I have rarely read anything so profoundly misogynistic. Your employer clearly gives no shits about the menopause, as they've either asked somebody ignorant to 'write some copy about this thing for the website' or they've bought some stupid content off the shelf without reading it.

I'm a bit dubious about recent efforts to foreground the menopause, and if it results in this kind of nonsense, my dubiousity is doubled.

I'd think it was reasonable if cross sex hormones were stopped before surgery, as they seem to add significantly to health risks. But it might be that's more true for women on testosterone than for men on oestrogen. Who knows, eh? Why include sex as a factor when having surgery on the reproductive system?

I’m sceptical about the sudden interest in menopause too. I have a hunch that Brexit and the pandemic hastened recruitment and retention issues in areas like nursing, teaching and general practice and now the govt is flapping about how to keep highly skilled useful women in the workforce so essential services don’t fold. The lack of curiosity about and care for women’s health is so ingrained that I can only conclude menopause is inconveniencing others.

mumda · 19/10/2023 09:34

I had an email about acas menopause training last night..
Can someone else go and have a look at that. ...

DreamItDoIt · 19/10/2023 09:49

I volunteer for a number of charities. I recently had some info from one of them and it was similar to this, although not as bad. I emailed them back and told them I didn't understand their wording and pointed out that their data wouldn't be accurate. They just pushed back with all the 'inclusive' stuff.

I will probably stop volunteering for them and they are desperate for people. I struggle to understand how a charity can spend so much on this stuff. It doesn't seem to occur to them that the majority of their staff and volunteers are women.

My employer's intranet page on the menopause has a massive red banner at the top which says 'it's important to note that not all women go through the menopause, and not all people who go through menopause or menstruate are women.'

It makes my blood absolutely boil every time I see it.

And what makes it worse is that I know it was a woman who added that wording! What the fuck are we doing to ourselves!?

nepeta · 19/10/2023 19:27

This is what happens when the definition of 'woman' and 'man' is altered without any public consultations, so that it matches the desires of a very tiny group of individuals but tramples on everyone else.

By "this is what happens" I mean everything we are discussing in the context of the gender identity ideology:

Once 'woman' might mean 'likes thigh-high socks and skirt-go-spinny', of course those humans who belong to the female sex no longer have a name.

So now we cannot say that we are women, just because we inhabit female bodies and are treated and seen as female by others. If we don't like the new definitions of 'woman' because they are either circular and empirically empty or deeply sexist, then we are told that we are the bigots. Even though it is us who have been erased, whose identities have been invalidated here.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 19/10/2023 20:05

It doesn't seem to occur to them that the majority of their staff and volunteers are women.

It doesn't occur to them because they take those women for granted and don't consider that they might have feelings about this stuff.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 19/10/2023 20:06

Once 'woman' might mean 'likes thigh-high socks and skirt-go-spinny', of course those humans who belong to the female sex no longer have a name.

Exactly. This has always been my argument against making it easier to get a GRC.

SaulHudsonDavidJones · 19/10/2023 20:38

I would actively avoid applying for a job with any company that is like this. I know it's not always obvious but as soon as I get a whiff I avoid like the plague.

Farmageddon · 19/10/2023 20:38

Fuck sake OP that is grim.

I changed jobs a few months ago, now working in a small charity - lovely people etc. etc. BUT.... loads of pronouns on email signatures (not mine) and pride flags in the office, which honestly make me roll my eyes but also a bit anxious that this is going to rear it's fucking head sometime soon.

I am so in awe of people like Maya, Allison and Jo Phoenix standing up against this shit, it must be so hard when it's your real life, with people you work with and generally like and your livelihood.

Never mind making it easier, it should be abolished. People can self declare any gender they want but it is of no relevance to society which is sometimes appropriately segregated by sex. There is no rationale for segregating by gender and if we did so, we'd need 100 different spaces.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/10/2023 00:24

I completely agree but was arguing that it shouldn't be made worse as an existing law.

MariaLuna · 20/10/2023 00:36

Honestly woman can't have anything to themselves, even if they don't want it. Men always have to muscle in.

Ummm. I'm pretty sure we don't get the menopause as such.

Try again.

This is so 🤬 true!!

StealthHedgehog · 20/10/2023 07:37

I think I've realised one of the main reasons they didn't make menopause a protected characteristic; this would happen.

It needs to remain under sex as protection and issue associated with women.
