I pre ordered this book ages ago, just got an email from Amazon saying my order is delayed and they'll let me know when they'll despatch it.

Had this happened to anyone else? Is the publication delayed or have the not got enough??

@SiliconHeaven When I went on my local library's website (a borough of London) there were three copies (I think) and 8 reservations.

I live in a wokey-doke area (lots of pro-trans support) and so I find this heartening. Maybe people want to froth or maybe people want to learn more about Graham or maybe they thought to read it and make up their own minds, I don't know. But your librarian is wrong... people can read whatever they like, and she should keep her opinions to herself.

Being a public sector worker in possession of an opinion. I have an ‘adult human female’ tote bag that I wouldn’t dare use at work.

It’s very sad isn’t it? I could be accused of creating a hostile workplace environment or even of bullying the library assistant by subjecting her to my views.
A lot worse has happened to way more important people than me though. Definitely think this particular woman will complain. Ironically I was the union rep who advised her against raising a grievance against her boss a few years ago. I didn’t think the ‘reasonable adjustment’ she wanted was, in fact, reasonable.

@SiliconHeaven I expect you were remembered by the library assistant. I do think you should complain to the library service, as you would not put it past the assistant to do something such as hold up the book being borrowed again.

I'm deliberately adding to this thread as I remember comments on it about borrowing the book from the library.

I borrowed it, read it and returned it today. great book, really enjoyed it. I returned it a couple of days late because I couldn't renew it and wanted to finish it before returning. I couldn't renew it because it was reserved by 4 separate people.

I apologised to the library assistant and explained the above, asked how much fine I owed. She said 'I am very disappointed that there is even one reserve on it, let alone 4, given who it is by'

I am beyond angry. I said 'how dare you, the poor man has been treated terribly for no good reason' the library assistant adopted a cats bum face, slammed my change down on the counter and turned away.

I work for the council, she had greeted me by name, so I am worried that she will make a complaint about me.

Having worked in libraries, I would never comment on a borrower’s reading choices - we were just happy to see people reading and using the library.

I honestly think you have grounds to give feedback that the assistant made a disparaging remark regarding your book choice and it made you feel uncomfortable and judged. You’re a taxpayer and library patron, and entitled to use the library to read whatever you want from their book stock.

She can make a complaint against you if she really wants to - cite the Rachel Meade employment tribunal and make a counter claim for harassment.....

(in my fantasies)

I picked my copy from the library last week. No unpleasant comments from my young librarian. I was happy to order it to support GL. But gosh it's a poorly written book. It's not that interesting and the writing style is so long-winded and dull! I'm normally a very quick reader but its taken all week to get to p100 and am not allowed to renew it as the reserve list is quite long. So I may not even finish it!!

socialdilemmawhattodo · 03/02/2024 19:12

I finally finished the book - incurred a couple of days library fines to do so. The editor is thanked - no idea why. I haven't had such a thin book <300 pages take quite so long to read in a long time. To be honest when I look at what I do behind the scenes I have no idea why GL is so lauded on here. That is not the conclusion I expected to reach when I ordered the book from the library service all those months ago.

On the app and can't edit, so lost part of my post. Basically a disappointing read.

Was it, aye?

Yours would appear to be a minority opinion from the reviews I'm reading. I've had a bit of a reading block lately, I blame doomscrolling on the phone during lockdown. But I devoured this book in 3 sittings.

The first half is very funny and full of little nuggets about comedy writing. The second....well a resume of the sad story of his cancellation and social death.

  • ps quite gossipy too eg the part of Dougal was first offered to Kevin MacAleer who played Uncle Colm in Derry Girls.

It is frustrating when one loses a post, but it sounds like no great loss from your description.

Had this book for a few weeks now. I'm reading it very slowly. I've actually started other books and finished them but feel obligated now to finish this one. The first part was good but the second has been difficult to wade through.

Abhannmor · 05/02/2024 09:00

Well Part 2 is not exactly a barrel of laughs. But that is surely the point? It left me feeling quite angry. So I got a second copy to give as a Christmas present.
