I pre ordered this book ages ago, just got an email from Amazon saying my order is delayed and they'll let me know when they'll despatch it.

Had this happened to anyone else? Is the publication delayed or have the not got enough??

Tweexted?

ArthurbellaScott · 01/12/2023 20:31

Twixt, surely.

So strange that he wants to bury the USP of the site. Posted is generic, could be any messaging forum.

I'm interested in the opinions of fellow MNetters. Do you think reading Tough Crowd could help men who are GC (i.e. realists) but scared of losing their jobs if they were to be openly so be a bit braver and more likely to support women and take their concerns seriously?

I have two such men I could gift this to for Xmas and I can't decide if it's going to be a 'courage calls to courage' moment or a 'fucking hell, look what happened to this incredibly successful man, imagine what could happen to me, I'm not going there' moment.

Both have decent and relatively influential jobs where I think they could do a bit of careful pushback without risking too much and both are determinedly not learning more about what's been happening IMO because if they learn about prisons and children etc then they might have to do something. Both think they are decent men who do the 'right thing'. Both have privately expressed to me they think it's all nonsense and 'of course men can't be women'. They are using the 'but it's a tiny minority and doesn't affect anyone else' line for now.

pronounsbundlebundle · 02/12/2023 19:44

Oh and of course I've tried to explain why it's important but my concerns have been shut down (I know, so lovely, I do think less of them for this but I still want to convince them of the importance of protecting women and children's rights as I think they could do some good). I think they might be more likely to listen to Glinner. Both love Father Ted.

duc748 · 02/12/2023 19:49

I'm a man, and I think so. I'm about half-way through (still on the funny bit! 😀).

PermanentTemporary · 02/12/2023 19:50

It depends on your relationship with them. Christmas isn't a learning opportunity, to me.

I think everyone has to find their own path with this.

Tinysoxxx · 02/12/2023 21:40

I gave it away to someone in the industry. He’s enjoying it. Hasn’t got to the last bit. I did warn him best not to be reading it if he’s ever inside Hat Tricks offices.

Literally buying this for mine right now!

I think some might need a little shove up that path.

I see the Guardian are happy to profit from his 'entrenched and maniacal' views, too.

Right?!!

TommyNever · 03/12/2023 12:05

Started this the other day. Finding it a little disappointing so far, I suppose because I didn't realise how much he was into what I would regard as cruddy pop culture (comics, punk etc).

Still, there are some chuckles here and there and I'll persevere.

NutellaEllaElla · 03/12/2023 12:38

"Cruddy", s'abit unnecessarily judgemental.

Well it's my personal opinion. And there's no point holding and expressing opinions about the value of this or that aspect of culture unless they are in fact judgemental.

Oh the irony

Abhannmor · 03/12/2023 15:01

I loved the pop culture part of Graham's life. Comics were a great escape from my dismal school life. And pop music magazines like NME and Hot Press were a lot like Comics. A fantasy world you could escape into. A trip down memory lane too. All the 80s and 90s bands that were the Next Big Thing that never quite happened.

Besides Fr.Ted , Black Books , the IT Crowd are all just pop culture surely?

NutellaEllaElla · 03/12/2023 15:10

@Abhannmor Yes but they're too low brow for some apparently.

LauraFedora · 03/12/2023 19:22

I'm not into/was never into comics or punk (new romantic all the way) but I found that part of Graham's story really interesting! Is aligning with the writer's interests essential for enjoying an autobiography? Bit narrow minded.

I'm deliberately adding to this thread as I remember comments on it about borrowing the book from the library.

I borrowed it, read it and returned it today. great book, really enjoyed it. I returned it a couple of days late because I couldn't renew it and wanted to finish it before returning. I couldn't renew it because it was reserved by 4 separate people.

I apologised to the library assistant and explained the above, asked how much fine I owed. She said 'I am very disappointed that there is even one reserve on it, let alone 4, given who it is by'

I am beyond angry. I said 'how dare you, the poor man has been treated terribly for no good reason' the library assistant adopted a cats bum face, slammed my change down on the counter and turned away.

I work for the council, she had greeted me by name, so I am worried that she will make a complaint about me.

ArthurbellaScott · 16/01/2024 17:53

Silicon I'm sorry. I don't know what she could feasibly complain about? You reading a library book?

Theeyeballsinthesky · 16/01/2024 19:02

Bloody hell Silicon that’s outrageous!!

Catscatscatscatscatscats · 16/01/2024 19:03

@SiliconHeaven well she had no right to comment upon what you choose to read. The library hold the book , presumably they want people to read it. Her political opinion has no place in a library

Pass on feedback to the library manager about staff not patronising customers or getting judgy about their book choices?

SirChenjins · 16/01/2024 19:11

The library assistant had no right to say anything - it’s not their job to comment on what anyone reads. Complain to the librarian and remind them of that.

Absolutely, dreadful way to behave and very rude! If anyone is to complain it should be @SiliconHeaven!
