I pre ordered this book ages ago, just got an email from Amazon saying my order is delayed and they'll let me know when they'll despatch it.

Had this happened to anyone else? Is the publication delayed or have the not got enough??

Love this ad on Twitter with a quote from the grauniad:

In other positive news, the book has even made it on to the Waterstones bestsellers list for general autobiography. Considering the fact they've not exactly been rushing to shine a light on it, I'd say that's not bad going.

The reviewer calls Linehan's activism, sorry, "activism" (as if it doesn't deserve that term), "a peculiar and self defeating obsession".
No evidence to support that claim, just completely dismissive.

Yeah, I bet she thought Martin Luther King had a peculiar and self-defeating obsession with racism, and Emmeline Pankhurst had a peculiar and self-defeating obsession with women getting the vote too.

LauraFedora · 01/11/2023 17:45

I have it on Audible. Really enjoying it but I'm filled with rage and sorrow on his behalf. Such a decent man, who really could have just not got involved and would still be a darling of the comedy circuit, but then, as I said, he's a decent man.

I actually think Glinner comes across as entirely reasoned in this book. The reviewer makes no acknowledgement of it's actual success in terms of sales which hints that it might be such a peculiar obsession after all.

People wouldn't be buying it if they didn't think he had a point. I don't think it's a success because it's a kind of roadcrash reading. I think it's because people feel Glinner's views are being vindicated and they appreciate him sticking to his guns.

LlynTegid · 01/11/2023 19:12

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this thread. Hadn't thought of buying the book but think I will now.

DirtyDuchess · 01/11/2023 22:46

I've just finished reading my lovely signed copy and thoroughly enjoyed finding out more about Graham's background and the timeline of his involvement in this nightmare we're going through.

I'm awed at his sacrifices and his steadfast belief and would love to give him a huge hug and tell him that I'll be there right to the end with him.

Tallisker · 01/11/2023 23:05

My copy direct from the publisher arrived yesterday (bought because of the threads on here) and it appears I have a signed copy 🥰

NutellaEllaElla · 02/11/2023 06:37

The Guardian review calls him maniacal and sad.

Well, I'm only halfway through. So far it's a thoughtful, funny and interesting read and certainly nothing remotely maniacal about it. Looking forward to seeing how it develops.

Woman2023 · 02/11/2023 07:17

"The more he is abused for his opinions, the more entrenched and maniacal those opinions seem to become. Here, as on his Twitter page, he makes a show of misgendering trans men and women, and says he is stunned at his “inability to make people care about the daylight theft of women’s rights, or the greatest safeguarding scandal since Rotherham, or the greatest medical scandal since thalidomide”."

I do wonder how this quote will age. She simply dismisses all our concerns as though we are in the grip of a mania and the sane people are the ones pretending people can change sex.

RavingStone · 02/11/2023 09:27

I've had my very sarcastic post deleted. I'm not quite sure which part broke the talk guidelines but maybe the sarcasm wasn't obvious so apologies if I got the tone wrong and it came across that I'm a misogynist arse!

My copy arrived a week ago ❤️

Yes, me too. I can see a lot of Guardian readers looking at the references to Thalidomide and Rotherham and wondering why the reviewer is so casually dismissive of Glinner's concerns.

The line about misgendering people made me laugh too. The two people he misgenders - or correctly sexes - are Steph Hayden and Aimee Challenor. If Sturges wants to stand up for their right to use female pronouns, it reflects less well on her than she imagines.

ArthurbellaScott · 02/11/2023 10:19

Do you think the Guardian writer is secretly gc?

She's subconsciously connecting current issues with Rotherham and thalidomide. Safeguarding, prejudice, and medical malpractise.

She's not wrong.

duc748 · 02/11/2023 10:49

The way those lines are held in quotation marks surely means the words are Glinner's, word for word, taken from the book? I haven't read the whole book yet, but haven't come across it so far. If they were her words rather than his, it would surely be wrong and dishonest to use the quote marks?

NutellaEllaElla · 02/11/2023 18:12

Yes Graham compared it to Thalidomide and Rotherham

windypumpkin · 02/11/2023 20:08

Hi I have no idea if I agree with Graham's views or not but I would like to read what he has to say. Thing is I'm a bit scared to get it out the library if it's even there and I don't want to order online/buy it from a person. I know that sounds ridiculous. Anyway what I was wondering was does anyone know if this is in tesco or whsmith - where I can buy using the self checkout

cheshirecatssmile · 02/11/2023 20:26

Started reading my copy last night. I found the beginning, his younger life difficult to follow as I was born late 70's. I am now in the father ted era and enjoying the book, I gather it only gets more interesting.

Why are you worried about using the library?

It's a bestselling book. What are you worried about?

Why are you worried about using the library?

You have to use your card and it gets linked to your name and address

ArthurbellaScott · 02/11/2023 20:35

Being accused of aligning myself with his views when I haven't decided how I feel yet. Having some sales assistant start calling me all sorts in a shop.

Loopyloooooo · 02/11/2023 22:00

Can someone cleverer than me point me in the right direction for being able to purchase this from the publisher please? Website?

ETA: just seen the link on the first page, apologies I'm half asleep tonight. Can't wait to read this, well bloody done Graham.

AtrociousCircumstance · 02/11/2023 22:05

@windypumpkin Don’t be too scared. If anyone is weird with you at the till (which they won’t be) claim innocence: “Oh I’m buying it for my aunt because she loves Father Ted!”
