JK Rowling: Nandy 'one of the biggest reasons' women on Left don't trust Labour

IwantToRetire · 11/10/2023 17:49

The latest criticism comes as Labour holds its annual conference in Liverpool.

On Tuesday night, Ms Nandy tweeted an extract from her speech, which included the words: “Women’s rights are human rights and human rights are non-negotiable.

“My absolute priority will be to embolden and empower women and girls in every part of the world.”

This incensed Ms Rowling, who replied: “You said rapists should be transferred to women’s prisons if they self-identify as women.

“You called Woman’s Place UK a hate group.

“Given that you’re one of the biggest reasons many women on the Left no longer trust Labour to defend their rights, do you stand by these comments?”

Ms Rowling was referring to a question and answer session at the Labour conference in 2020, just after Sir Keir became leader.

She definitely did during the leadership challenge. Starmer was the only one who didn't IIRC.

I thought Thornberry had signed an alternative statement that backed off calling WPUK a hate group. I'm pretty sure Starmer signed the same one as I remember trying to decide whether that meant he was smart or a snivelling slime ball. I guess History has concluded.

Apologies if I've misremembered, I'll try and check tomorrow. I'm aware she's been no ally whatsoever and has said some spectacularly dumb things but I still think it's important to be as accurate as we can.

I think the Corybn/Owen Jones left who see Starmer having capitulated on every position he took to get the job, feel his absence from signing this declaration as his first betrayal, one of many (most recent ones being his 180s on the two-child cap, and HS2).

Ironic, really. The OJ/TRA ranks feel he's a total sellout on trans. And GC women feel the same.

I love Nandy and still quite like JK, think they are both good people

IwantToRetire · 12/10/2023 00:48

By chance have found there is a longer video of the response to the questions including should TW be in women's prisons.

Note Nandy’s rising inflection, which sounds like she’s unsure of the validity of her statement and seeking approval and affirmation from the crowd: “I think trans women are women? And trans men are men?” Cue the applause.

senua · 12/10/2023 08:30

Also, a lot of whataboutery, a lot of listing of other people we should worry about first.
The meeting / audience seems quite male.

I like, admire and respect Jack for her work on food poverty, but she’s a bit exasperating with her long list of latest fads and trends and diagnoses. I’d actually forgotten about her non-binariness, think she’s toned that down since this 2016 clip, or maybe I just didn’t notice during my pre-Mumsnet Twitter days.

Jack Monroe's work on food poverty as described by Jack Monroe is not always... as others describe it.

A tweet from Jack says she was unemployed 2011, selling everything in 2012, working in sex work and stealing to survive in 2013. Attempted suicide several times in 2013. Evicted from her flat with her three year old. She lived without a fridge or heati...

Jack Monroe, and why Twitter is raging

She is Shadow Secretary for International Development

Yes.

And this makes me even crosser.

She is passionate about the issues for women in the third world such as little girls being married to adult men, raped and dying in pregnancies their bodies weren't ready for. Such as girls being denied education.

Wonderful.

Are these women and girls needing this passion and support on the basis of their identity or the fact of their biological sex?

How many little boys are dying while trying to carry a pregnancy or give birth in a body too small and immature?

FGM....

It's absolute middle class wankery to on one hand trumpet about how wonderful you are for caring about all this and at the same time be trumpeting a lot of bull about how sex doesn't exist and men are women and women don't need single sex provision or words or rights.

It makes it very clear Nandy's busier identifying as being wonderful and caring about all the right things than she is in having a fucking clue or managing any kind of real integrity.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 12/10/2023 11:18

To be given a specific example of a man who raped a child, and to reply that we should be sympathetic to his request to be held in a women's prison - and the inference that anyone who doesn't consider him a woman is a raging bigot - is abhorrent.

I agree, then in any subsequent media appearance during the leadership campaign and after when asked about women's sex based rights she just kept babbling about "more light, less heat"

Ereshkigalangcleg · 12/10/2023 11:19

Also kept bringing up the "trans child in her constituency" for whom she was happy to throw women and girls under the bus.

RealityFan · 12/10/2023 11:40

Remember folks, she was very nearly Labour leader. It's not unlikely she could have got the gig. She could have very well been the next PM. And Self ID would be on its way in.

And that's from the party who nearly inflicted Corbyn on us as PM.

I'd think more about these two characters genuinely representing Labour (hard Left, Corbyn, and progressive Left, Nandy) than bland Left, Starmer.

And what it means if a Labour govt comes in, with Rayner in the wings, not even a cigarette paper's difference with those infamous Nandy comments.

Wags on Warriors fans forums have suggested they be selected as the half-time entertainment at the Grand Final on Saturday!

In fact, Nandy has never shown the slightest interest in the rugby club, despite it being what makes Wigan famous world-wide; she appears to be much more interested in the football club, for some reason.

You've gotta fucking laugh at Labour MPs picking Common People. The party is so far divorced from anything resembling fighting for working class people.

Their politics is all identity now (see Starmer's proposal for a new Race Relations Act, and his plans to make gender change easier, all he can see is identarian divides). He's not even proposing removing the 2-child cap on benefits, just how is he a champion of those at the bottom of the class struggle, or even middle classes struggling?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 12/10/2023 19:45

Haha seriously Grin

MorrisZapp · 12/10/2023 19:49

Look. Surely we have to let people have a dignified course to row back.

I'm furious with Nandy's earlier airheaded pronouncements, but I wanted her to know better, do better etc.

If she accepts now that womens rights actually matter, I'm pleased to hear it.

maltravers · 12/10/2023 19:53

I agree Morris, as long as she doesn’t mean “women with penises”. The problem is with all the weasel words we’ve been subjected to we don’t trust what Nandy and others say, unless they are very explicit (biological women would do…)

MrInbetween · 12/10/2023 20:02

Sorry but did I just listen to people CLAPPING at the idea of rapists going to prison with women???

Dont know whether to cry or swear profusely.

Seriously Labour sort yourself out

MrInbetween · 12/10/2023 20:05

@MorrisZapp She needs to come out and say what she defines as a woman.

And apologise for sacrificing the vulnerable women in prison.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 12/10/2023 20:59

KJK with Julia Hartley Brewer on Talk TV earlier

https://x.com/talktv/status/1712469332201250909?s=46&t=SPorwN-mokktL467rcZ57g

Kellie-Jay Keen: “Once you say transwomen are women, everything you say on that topic will be dishonest because the fundamental premise of your belief system is untrue.”

Ereshkigalangcleg · 12/10/2023 21:01

And also Douglas Murray, pulling absolutely no punches:

https://x.com/talktv/status/1712463810941137288?s=46&t=SPorwN-mokktL467rcZ57g

Douglas Murray calls Lisa Nandy “a nincompoop” after she clashed with JK Rowling over her stance on trans issues.

Just because somebody says that they are a unicorn does not mean we have to pretend that they are a unicorn. We have work to do.”

NotBadConsidering · 12/10/2023 21:06

Kellie-Jay Keen: “Once you say transwomen are women, everything you say on that topic will be dishonest because the fundamental premise of your belief system is untrue.”

And to apply that further, from the amazing Sall Grover:

“If you think women have penises, I won’t believe a single word you say about anything else. Because if you will lie about something so obvious, I will assume you will lie about everything.”

IcakethereforeIam · 12/10/2023 21:16

Has Nandy responded to JKR's tweet?

duc748 · 12/10/2023 23:11

You've gotta fucking laugh at Labour MPs picking Common People.

"We are not the party of the unemployed"

Another Labour quote.

determinedtomakethiswork · 12/10/2023 23:38

Good for JKR. She is amazing. I'm listening to the witch trials podcast. I love her even more.
