JK Rowling: Nandy 'one of the biggest reasons' women on Left don't trust Labour

The latest criticism comes as Labour holds its annual conference in Liverpool.

On Tuesday night, Ms Nandy tweeted an extract from her speech, which included the words: “Women’s rights are human rights and human rights are non-negotiable.

“My absolute priority will be to embolden and empower women and girls in every part of the world.”

This incensed Ms Rowling, who replied: “You said rapists should be transferred to women’s prisons if they self-identify as women.

“You called Woman’s Place UK a hate group.

“Given that you’re one of the biggest reasons many women on the Left no longer trust Labour to defend their rights, do you stand by these comments?”

Ms Rowling was referring to a question and answer session at the Labour conference in 2020, just after Sir Keir became leader.

I wonder if it was this question from the floor that raised awareness?!

Off topic - but it seems not only was glitter being thrown at the Labour Party Conference but also covid germs. Many who attended now testing positive.

Who is that woman? I've seen her before, asking awkward questions!

Got the answers we expect, but unfortunately the video cut off before the end, sounds like she was rowing away from the "ban them" position.

Dr Julia Long, who was once considered by MNHQ to do a web chat, on request from many MNers, after she made Jack Monroe look silly on Channel 4 News about 7 years ago or so. She never did get to do the chat though!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 11/10/2023 20:41

She's a legend.

Sorry to be off topic also. Do you have any info on that please?

LarkLane · 11/10/2023 20:45

I love the knowing looks into camera from her😂

Floisme · 11/10/2023 19:09

To be fair to Emily Thornberry, I don't think she signed that statement.

She definitely did during the leadership challenge. Starmer was the only one who didn't IIRC.

JKR is a legend without a doubt. We're incredibly lucky that she speaks out for us. Strong, brave and honest.

It's just an absolute shame that so many women who don't have power and/or money behind them can't speak out honestly. And if they are brave enough and do speak out they lose their jobs and suffer the same abuse that JKR has.

All strong, brave, honest women. Unlike several women in the Labour party.

If you mean about covid, purely anecdotal from some users on facebook and I think one othe reporters from one of the news channels also.

And if fact I think someone who went to LWS also said they had got covid.

I thought it was just my computer playing up. Does anyone know Aja and could ask her?

Or indeed ask Julia Long if you know her?

I think the policy now is don't ban them, send them to re-education classes. 😀

You piqued my interest so I googled and found this from 2016:

Debate: how do trans people get treated by institutions?

Ffood writer and transgender campaigner Jack Monroe, who was born a female but now identifies as non-binary, and the academic and feminist activist Dr Julia ...

duc748 · 11/10/2023 21:26

I know I've seen her before, but not with Jack Monroe. Must have been the Labour leadership, as mentioned upthread.

LarkLane · 11/10/2023 21:29

I'm local to Liverpool and it's been rife there recently. It's not surprising that delegates have gone down with it!

Heliotroper · 11/10/2023 18:42

Lisa Nandy, Rebecca Long-Bailey, Emily Thornberry, Angela Rayner, Dawn Butler and Rosena Allin-Khan all signed the pledge to expell gender critical Labour members

Exactly..and we will f.cking remember...

Jack Monroe comes across as thick as mince in that clip.

I've seen DrJulia Long on some of the streams of LWS, and when KJK went to the police station she was outside

oh dear. you almost feel sorry for Jack with that public humiliation! hyperbole and ego versus facts!

MavisMcMinty · 11/10/2023 22:15

I like, admire and respect Jack for her work on food poverty, but she’s a bit exasperating with her long list of latest fads and trends and diagnoses. I’d actually forgotten about her non-binariness, think she’s toned that down since this 2016 clip, or maybe I just didn’t notice during my pre-Mumsnet Twitter days.

MavisMcMinty · 11/10/2023 22:15

EDIT: Oh that’s weird, never managed to post the same thing twice before! Sorry.

regardless of what else she's done, I cant admire anyone who's thrown vulnerable women under the bus like this.

Floisme · 11/10/2023 22:30

She definitely did during the leadership challenge. Starmer was the only one who didn't IIRC.

I thought Thornberry had signed an alternative statement that backed off calling WPUK a hate group. I'm pretty sure Starmer signed the same one as I remember trying to decide whether that meant he was smart or a snivelling slime ball. I guess History has concluded.

Apologies if I've misremembered, I'll try and check tomorrow. I'm aware she's been no ally whatsoever and has said some spectacularly dumb things but I still think it's important to be as accurate as we can.

IcakethereforeIam · 11/10/2023 22:42

Jic anyone wasn't aware the clip of Nandy that @duc748 posted upthread is possibly a few years old. It wasn't from this years conference.

Until Nandy apologises for that and admits she was wrong I wouldn't trust her as far as I could throw her.
