JK Rowling: Nandy 'one of the biggest reasons' women on Left don't trust Labour

The latest criticism comes as Labour holds its annual conference in Liverpool.

On Tuesday night, Ms Nandy tweeted an extract from her speech, which included the words: “Women’s rights are human rights and human rights are non-negotiable.

“My absolute priority will be to embolden and empower women and girls in every part of the world.”

This incensed Ms Rowling, who replied: “You said rapists should be transferred to women’s prisons if they self-identify as women.

“You called Woman’s Place UK a hate group.

“Given that you’re one of the biggest reasons many women on the Left no longer trust Labour to defend their rights, do you stand by these comments?”

Ms Rowling was referring to a question and answer session at the Labour conference in 2020, just after Sir Keir became leader.

Good for her hypocrisy won't win votes we fucking remember

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/10/2023 17:53

Good for her. We've reached the stage when the use of the word 'women' doesn't always mean what it did. I want the Tories out but I don't want to jump out of the frying pan into the fire.

Colourfulponderings · 11/10/2023 17:54

She speaks accurately about how I feel.

I’m so grateful that JKR continues to put herself on the line to speak for women like me.

teawamutu · 11/10/2023 17:56

Nail. On. Head.

Time for Nandy to show whether she's capable of critical thinking and courage.

senua · 11/10/2023 17:58

As always: legal, decent, honest and truthful. She nails it.

Heliotroper · 11/10/2023 18:11

Lisa Nandy's comments on this issue will always come back to haunt her. Starmer knows it, which is why he he is slowly demoting her.

I watched LN's speech, and to be honest she invested a huge amount of time and energy to talking about women in Africa, women in the Middle East, women elsewhere in the world, which fine, great, good, obviously no one can object to giving these women thought.

... But surely it's unrealistic to think a backbencher in the UK cold have any sort of genuine influence in other countries.

Voters in the UK want to hear how LN can support and help women in LN's actual country. In her actual constituency. The UK is riddled with problems, economic problems, social problems, and she's preaching about solving problems for women "all over the globe" it's really not appropriate right now during a COLC here in the UK. It's all bullshit, Frankly.

Heliotroper · 11/10/2023 18:28

She is Shadow Secretary for International Development

She is the Shadow Secretary of State for International Development, so hardly unreasonable to talk about Africa etc.

That said, JKR is spot-on, as usual. Although fwiw I don't think Nandy has said anything worse on the topic than the other goons: Lammy, Cooper, Thornbury... They all seem as bad as each other.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/10/2023 18:41

My MP has, as far as I know, said nothing or next to nothing on the record about this. Head down, hard work for her constituents and on her Shadow Ministerial brief, skilful avoidance of this altogether. Remarkable, really, given she has Goldsmiths in the constituency. She managed to avoid deselection too, in spite of not being a Momentum/Corbyn supporter. Very astute politically, I suppose.

Heliotroper · 11/10/2023 18:42

Lisa Nandy, Rebecca Long-Bailey, Emily Thornberry, Angela Rayner, Dawn Butler and Rosena Allin-Khan all signed the pledge to expell gender critical Labour members

SunnieShine · 11/10/2023 18:45

Lisa Nandy is a two- faced fool.

Well do they want our gender critical votes or not? I would like to know.

duc748 · 11/10/2023 18:57

The worst of it is, it doesn't matter if they're 'Corbynite', 'Starmerite', or 'Blairite'.

Ironically, it's like it's the one thing they all agree on! 😛

Maybe Labour assumes a) GC women are rare, just a handful of impure bigots whose vote they’d rather not attract, and/or b) that they’ll win the next election with or without those impure bigots.

They’re gonna need a bigger, more diverse focus group.

pineapplepinecones · 11/10/2023 19:02

Here is what I just don’t get. Ok Nandy thinks TWAW - crack on. But why do they think the rest is of us have to believe it too? And even mentioning La Lady Dick is a hideous bigotry.

I am in a swing Labour seat. I would vote for them if they can support biological women only spaces and short lists, and sports.

Remember those heady days when we once thought the world would be a better place run by women?

Even that Brexit hothouse period when Caroline Lucas thought a result would be had if the men stood aside.

With all these Labour women happy to see your rights set aside, maybe we realise that women in high places aren't a help here.

IwantToRetire · 11/10/2023 19:05

Well do they want our gender critical votes or not? I would like to know.

No. Ithink that is obvious.

Afterall women who have been Labour Party women for years, have been kicked out for saying a woman is a biological female.

So not only do they not want our vote, they dont want GC women in the Labour party.

But one the other hand, if they thought there were enough people with GC views to the extent that it could change the outcome of the election, then you can get they would then be GC.

They are so certain they will get in because so many people are fed up with the Tories, that they dont need extra votes from what they see as a fringe group.

Or even as the men shouting at women on saturday would say a "hate gruop".

To be fair to Emily Thornberry, I don't think she signed that statement.

duc748 · 11/10/2023 19:11

Absolutely they don't want GC women; talking sense and all. But they don't mind de haut en bas lecturing people on how they should educate themselves on trans rights etc.

RealityFan · 11/10/2023 19:11

Floisme · 11/10/2023 19:09

To be fair to Emily Thornberry, I don't think she signed that statement.

She might as well have. She's been the most useless "help" to women, totally dismissive of any women's fears here as bigoted.

HermioneWeasley · 11/10/2023 19:16

I love JKR not letting them slither away

This says as much about the Tory govt as it does the Labour Party. That we can be as a country in such deep shit because of the Conservatives, that women will put aside GC concerns to vote the alternative in.

How badly off are we that women will vote en masse against the current lot while the Opposition are so confident they have things in the bag to dismiss fundamental concerns of women over gender.

This is wild.

LarkLane · 11/10/2023 19:20

Well done JKR, you are doing more for women and girls than most of these elected women MPs have ever done.
