Yes¡ Just done a little victory dance. I hope it really is as good as it sounds.

On Tuesday, Steve Barclay will announce proposals to push back against “wokery” in the health service that has led to women’s rights being increasingly sidelined. The changes would give men and women the right to be cared for on wards only shared by people of their own biological sex, and to have intimate care provided by those of the same sex.Mr Barclay said the plan would mean the return of “a common-sense approach to sex and equality”, ensuring that women’s dignity was protected and their voices heard. The proposals follow concerns from patients and staff about biological men being allowed on to women’s hospital wards. In 2021, NHS guidance said trans patients could be placed on single-sex wards on the basis of the gender with which they identified.

Whilst I agree with others that a female ward is no place for a male patient, I'm wondering, with the NHS in the state it's in, where all these side rooms etc for trans patients are coming from.

They can go in the men’s wards while they work that out

That's for trans people to campaign for.

There is a question of how many men will continue to self identify as trans if that doesn't allow you access to female-only wards.

The number of trans prisoners will also drop when that doesn't guarantee preferential treatment.

There seems to be a shift towards "those who transitioned years ago" both here and on Twitter, presumably to get us to give way and roll over.

I'm afraid the social contract is now so broken that you'll find women just saying No.

Previously, no we didn't think males "passed" but women are hardwired not to say so and make a fuss in an enclosed space with someone who could kill you with their bare hands. And now with all the damage Stonewall have done - or should I say, sterling work to highlight why the GRA needs repealing? - absolutely it's a NO.

It's an equal no, with no demarcation between "those who transitioned years ago" and the Alex Drummonds of this world.

Women (Kelley and Hunt excepted) didn't make this problem. So no.

And we want our stuff back.

Barclay's made the announcement, so it looks like it's going ahead. The Guardian has managed a characteristically snide report, of course, with a quote from an anonymous frontbench MP: “I’m fed up of feeling intimidated by bigots and want people to know we’re still a home for LGBT+ people. Many of us will not back down.”

Absolutely well said

It’s the latest tactic. It’s still a no.

Bigots.

Yeah, women who want to be safe and secure on a hospital ward at their most vulnerable, who want single sex care for their privacy and dignity.

Fucking bigots, the lot of them.

Sigh.

I AM LGBT+ you stupid man. Don't you dare to imply that removing access, privacy, dignity, consent and bodily autonomy from women and women being raped ffs is a necessary part of LGBT+

It bloody isn't. It is a need experienced only by the extreme misogynist who neither values women nor appreciates boundaries in freely accessing them. Or rather accessing their bodies; no other part of the woman after all is of any interest. Her faith, her culture, her identity, her beliefs, her values, her feelings, her safety, nah, whatever, just make her shut up and get undressed.

And if you think anyone feeling that women should not be raped is a 'bigot' then wtaf are you doing in any position of responsibility.

Mmmm cos males on female wards is such a WIN for lesbians!! Come on Guardian, you can snark better than this. Put some effort in!

Hear, hear.

I am saying 'no'.

Not if you think your pal is lovely.
Not if your pal is only tiny.
Not if your pal has been getting away with it for years.
Not if your pal has lovely hair.
Not if your pal is very sad.
Not if your pal is very kind.
Not if your pal has the correct certification.
Not if your pal has gone to a lot of effort.
Not if your pal will be upset.

It's a 'no'.

Get over it.

How utterly offensive.

Women who say 'no' to dick are 'bigoted'.

This is an old, old song.

They call us prudes.
They call us uptight.
They call us pearl clutcher.
They call us frigid.
They call us bigots.

That's not my name.

ArabellaScott · 03/10/2023 14:25

sorry, the rage seems to bring out the list-writer in me.

I want this on a t shirt.

I will be immediately arrested for making men sad, but it's worth it.

Four letter word just to get me along
It's a difficulty and I'm biting on my tongue and I
I keep stalling, keeping me together
People around gotta find something to say now

Holding back, everyday the same
Don't wanna be a loner
Listen to me, oh no
I never say anything at all
But with nothing to consider they forget my name (Ame, ame, ame)

[Chorus]
They call me 'frigid'
They call me 'bigot'
They call me 'prude'
They call me 'Karen'

That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name

We are where we are due to the 2004 GRA

It legislated for all this to happen

The Tory Party do deserve blame, no question.

However, apparently the GRA was forced on them by the European Court of Human Rights.

And that's an institution that is heavily backed by the left-wing, with the right-wing being more skeptical.

I think you can certainly argue that the real forces in play were from the left-wing, and it's just that the Tory Party didn't stand up to it.

So blame the Tories. But you might also want to think, that maybe some Tories had a point when they objected to rule by unelected judges.

Being ruled over by "international human rights standards" that are actually at the whim of judges to considerable degree, is really I think an elitist system of power.

The GRA was Labour but I entirely agree on the rest

I think Labour could have allowed same sex marriage instead?

Yes to elite and unelectable system though

JanesLittleGirl · 03/10/2023 14:44

I'm happy to blame the Tories for almost everything that is wrong in the country today but it is worth remembering that the GRA was passed in 2004 under Tony Blair and the EqA was passed in 2010 under Gordon Brown. I don't think that they were Tories.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 03/10/2023 14:47

However, apparently the GRA was forced on them by the European Court of Human Rights.

It wasn't. It was a fudge because the Labour party (or, TBF, most other parties at that point I think) didn't want to allow same sex marriage. They could have done that straight off - benefiting far more people and meeting the ECHR requirements - and skipped the 'same sex people can't marry unless one of them pretends they're really the opposite sex' step. If tou go back to the original debates, it's explicity stated in Hansard that they were taking the GRA route to avoid allowing same sex marriage.

ResisterRex · 03/10/2023 14:51

Yes, Labour did bring in the GRA to avoid same-sex marriage. Which is pretty conservative/ right-wing! It was the Tories who spelled out the problems. Especially Lord Tebbit IIRC. It's all upside down and back to front.

Yes. I wonder if this is why so many are averse to looking at the origins of the GRA. It was born out of homophobia.

I do feel sorry for someone I know, who is M to F trans and has had bottom surgery (ie has no penis) and additionally has had surgery to get boobs. Although born male, she would pose no risk to women/girls. On a male ward, she could easily be gawped at/worse as she has boobs and all the bottom surgery.

it’s a difficult problem, but there definitely should not be anyone capable of rape (ie who has a penis) on a women’s ward.

I feel sorry for your friend because they are clearly really troubled. But they're not a woman just because they've chosen to have surgery to remove their genitalia and cross-sex hormones. They're still male and should not be on a woman's ward. There needs to be work to make sure that males like this are not treated badly on the male wards but this it not women's problem to solve.
