Tough Crowd, due out 12 October. I’m delighted to see this. He is such a good writer and has sacrificed so much in defence of women’s rights and reality itself. Hope it’s a smash hit.

My pre-order placed on 18 September on Amazon arrived today.

"hope it's a smash hit"

It would appear the general public is more interested in large-print word searches and colouring in dinosaurs.

I would be interested in finding out where that information comes from. If numbers are taken from Amazon, it entirely ignores the copies ordered directly from the publisher (and many of us did order direct from the publisher as the lure of a signed copy was powerful!) or other sources. In addition, having looked at Amazon, I am only able to view details for the top 100 books, not the top 1000 or more. Which book list is this source referring to? Where does the specific number given of sales come from?

Unverified sources by a biased source aren't worth much, I'm afraid.

DworkinWasRight · 19/10/2023 20:31

Thousands of people ordered directly from the publisher. Those figures won’t show up in bookshop sales - particularly if bookshops are hiding copies.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 19/10/2023 20:33

Wow a randomly pasted in piece of text from a non specified source from one of our regular scolders

well that’s me convinced!

Someone dragged out the old Amstrad and daisy-wheel for that one.

It's popbitch from the look of it, the email comes out every Thursday.

Mine too! Can't wait to read it.

Snarky little item in today's Popbitch. Someone briefing against Glinner?

But my order from the publisher was number 9,100+, it’s bollocks that he only sold 390 copies including pre-sales.

BezMills · 20/10/2023 03:36

He sold more than 390 on this thread alone!

AutumnCrow · 20/10/2023 05:19

‘Pop Bitch’? My, a veritable Camden’s Annals of the courts of publishing.

(Anyone who believes that 390 figure is delusional. So yeah I can imagine there is someone on here who does, arising out of jealousy, very ugly.)

Catsanfan · 20/10/2023 06:13

390 my arse. And...popbitch? Yes we all trust your sources 🙄

Stephannee · 20/10/2023 08:48

"particularly if bookshops are hiding copies."

Yes I'm sure that's the reason.

As one of two posters that referenced Popbitch, I'm just clarifying that I mentioned it because it looked like bollocks and I couldn't understand where they'd got it from.

Not counting publisher sales seems likely.

I do wonder wtf bookshops are doing trying NOT to sell books. Are they genuinely hoping to be replaced by Amazon?

BezMills · 20/10/2023 09:06

If the above turns out to be unmitigated bollocks I'm sure we'll get some clarification and apologies from Big Stef. So, there's that to look forward to.

NoWordForFluffy · 20/10/2023 09:09

How did it go to the top of the Amazon chart when the pre-sale started, if it only sold 390 copies?! Honestly, the sheer idiocy yeah, yeah, I know it's desperation tinged with stupidity of some people is astounding.

BezMills · 20/10/2023 09:12

I didn't see it in any top tens when I did a 5 minutes google, but I did notice that JKR's new book is selling very well. We got our copy on release day, of course. Not because of her stance on FWR but because she's an amazing write and my DW buys everything she writes.

borntobequiet · 20/10/2023 09:18

My local indie bookshop (small midlands town) wrote down the details of my order very quickly - “We’ve had a few orders for this”.

OceanicBoundlessness · 20/10/2023 09:36

I ordered my copy on Amazon on 15th September.
It's now unavailable and they'll let me know when it's back in stock.
Was I in the 390?..

To be fair it is very well connected in the circles it covers and is largely intelligently written and well-versed in eg media law. But yeah, I want to see the working out on this one.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/10/2023 10:09

Someone has started a thread specifically about this

It seems to be back in stock, I ordered it just now and apparently I will have it Sunday.

Bowednotbroken · 20/10/2023 16:38

Typical! I cancelled my Amazon order yesterday, re-ordered from the publisher only to find here that Amazon orders are arriving and an email from the publisher says stock shortage! Hmm

Can't find a Dinosaurs around the world book out last week, there is one that came out in August. Is that the one?
Where can we find info that it sold so many copies? One review on amazon against over 100 for Tough Crowd.

SeptemberSky · 20/10/2023 17:21

I cancelled my Amazon order and have ordered direct from Eye.
