I think if you're known for being and dressing 'punk', it's really punk to kick back against the stereotypes. Wasn't there a punk singer who used to wear ball gowns?

Oh, and Bragg is a that.

ArabeIIaScott · 23/09/2023 12:19

'Spectacularly missing the point. Bragg was critical of the dishonest way Distras has been rebranded to make her palatable to conservatively minded daily mail readers (squares).'

Was he, aye?

Someone else criticises Distras for being 'frumpy'.

The Mail has a majority female readership. God forbid a paper caters to a female audience, or a woman fail to dress in an adequately sexually appealing way for old men's tastes.

AIstolemylunch · 23/09/2023 12:19

As if he's punk! With his millions of pounds mansion by the sea and interior designer partner putting in hand printed wallpapers! massive, massive hypocrite - like all the champagne socialists.

ScribblingPixie · 23/09/2023 12:24

Quite incredible. I did like her own Tweet though where she called him a See You Next Tuesday. Punk enough for you, Billy?

Heliotroper · 23/09/2023 12:26

I doubt even Mail readers are disturbed about young ladies dressing in a style first pioneered nearly fifty years ago.

Whatever she wears is just a fashion choice and it is her choice.

‘It started with me sharing my views on Twitter about cancel culture, free speech and gender identity.

'Female-centric platforms and organisations that once supported me started calling me transphobic and a national station wouldn’t play my song called Girl In The Mirror — apparently because it was all about girlhood and womanhood.

‘Music journalists won’t speak to me because they think I’m transphobic — but I refuse to self-censor my views on this.

‘I asked my live booking agency to help me put measures in place to keep me safe at my future gigs, and they responded by sending me an email with a series of links to “educate” me on why cancel culture can be a good thing.

‘In a separate email, I was advised to “distance” myself from the debate for the sake of my career.

Meet the ordinary women who are being CANCELLED by the trans lobby

A would-be MP, an artist and a singer are among the ordinary women who have been cancelled. Speaking to JILL FOSTER, they explain how they have been bullied, harassed and punished.

If it has been a bloke in that dress, Billy would have said how brave he was.

Joolsin · 12/09/2023 19:15

Many years ago, at a stage door after a gig, I and a group of about 6 others helped hide Billy Bragg from his stalker (a lone, female uberfan). He was shitting himself. The hypocrite.

Have you reminded him of this at all ?

Twitter/X would be a great place for it.

Heliotroper · 23/09/2023 12:39

If punk was about the young making old people angry simply by the way they dress then she ain't doing bad.

EdithStourton · 23/09/2023 12:43

ArabeIIaScott · 23/09/2023 10:59

Oh, I see.

Well, quite, Arabella.
That picture says rather a lot.

Thelnebriati · 23/09/2023 12:51

But he subscribes to identity politics, so his anger makes sense. The outfit is literally how he knows a persons identity. Cut your hair or change your outfit and suddenly he is uncertain who you are. If he can't tell then he might accidentally act like a terrible transphobe, and that would be unbearable.

Igmum · 23/09/2023 13:23

This is vile. Utter misogynist. I have some of his records from way back when. I've known this for a while but it's still awful to see him prove it time and again.

RebelliousCow · 23/09/2023 13:25

I think people are giving Billy Bragg far too much credit. He doesn't " hate women", he's just caught in a conundrum of his own creation - based on the fact that what matters most to him is his Leftie group identity. His whole career has been about singing protest songs as big Left events and rallies.

He's just following the crowd and in doing that finds himself saying the most ridiculous and sexist things in order to justify the mess he's in. He doesn't understand the issue, and he doesn't really grasp the conflict at the heart of the trans agenda. He's not done any research; he hasn't really listened or followed up on anything.

And he's addicted to twitter and keeps on feeling he has to say something about whatever is circulating in his twitter bubble. He probably feels like he's 'taking one for the side' - in being subject to so much social media comment and 'abuse'. And that further solidifies his position as a vocal ally and hero of the trans movement and the 'woke' left in general.

RebelliousCow · 23/09/2023 13:29

For some people 'identity' is something they cling on to; a persona they feel comfortable with and so are resistant to change. But a healthy dynamic sense of self evolves and grows, and changes throughout one's life. It is not static.

So many people once they get to a certain age stop listening to anything new; no new music; just re-playing the favourites from when they were at their prime. And they still dress the way they did when they were younger like they are frozen in time.

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 23/09/2023 13:36

This is a picture of Billy Bragg dressed down to be palatable to Daily Telegraph readers (in order to complain about a lack of social media forums for men) in 2014.

Is that a waistcoat he's wearing?

Chersfrozenface · 23/09/2023 11:28

I think that's just his base default setting and he chooses or adapts his Causes accordingly.

It's certainly looking that way. It keeps accidentally spilling out.

piscofrisco · 23/09/2023 14:05

He's vile. And I also hate his music and always have.

maltravers · 23/09/2023 14:55

So her dress is inappropriate, but if she dresses as a stripper that would be A Ok and feminist. Got it. You prat.

Waitwhat23 · 23/09/2023 15:00

He's currently telling Louise how disappointed he is that 'formally progressive woman' like her is choosing to appear in publications like the Daily Mail, Telegraph and the Spectator.

And yet...

He's been in the Daily Telegraph a lot, for such a professionally left-wing bloke.

maltravers · 23/09/2023 15:13

Well the rules for the ladies are different, they shall be judged and found wanting.

“in order to complain about a lack of social media forums for men”

For real?

Words fail me.

But really, that tells you everything you need to know about him, doesn’t it?

RoyalCorgi · 23/09/2023 16:46

Waitwhat23 · 23/09/2023 15:00

He's currently telling Louise how disappointed he is that 'formally progressive woman' like her is choosing to appear in publications like the Daily Mail, Telegraph and the Spectator.

And yet...

And of course he knows full well that she can't appear in left-wing publications like the Guardian because they're not interested in publishing her story. Of course, not so long ago Bragg wrote a piece for the Guardian saying that cancel culture doesn't exist, it was just making people accountable for their opinions. So in other words having endorsed a decision by left-wing publications to refuse to platform certain women, he then attacks those women for daring to speak to right-wing publications rather than left-wing ones.

He really is the most loathsome hypocrite.
