Feminists want trans women to show passports at public lavatories, claims Labour MP Angela Eagle

Dame Angela Eagle, who is standing to be a Commons committee chairman, said lavatories were being “policed” at the expense of those who don’t conform to gender norms.

The MP for Wallasey said the heated debate about <a class="break-all" href="https://archive.ph/o/Y3zfs/www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2023/06/12/labour-mp-challenge-keir-starmer-single-sex-spaces/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">trans people using single-sex spaces revolved around “recreating and then enforcing” gender stereotypes.
S
peaking at a fringe event at the Trades Union Congress conference in Liverpool, she criticised <a class="break-all" href="https://archive.ph/o/Y3zfs/www.telegraph.co.uk/kemi-badenoch/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Kemi Badenoch, the equalities minister, for seeking to change the wording of the Equality Act to specify that it protects “<a class="break-all" href="https://archive.ph/o/Y3zfs/www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/08/13/gender-neutral-lavatories-are-an-invasion-of-womens-privacy/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">biological sex”.

This would make it clear that trans women have to use the men’s lavatories, while trans men have to use the ladies’, Dame Angela said.

‘Policed at public facilities’She added: “Whilst that may affect a small number of people, the actual effect is that loads of non-gender-conforming women will effectively be being policed in their use of public facilities.

“We’ve never had to show a passport to get into the toilet before. I dread to think what else they might want us to show if they change the law.”

Dame Angela warned that people would be “challenged using the toilets” for merely deviating from gender norms, citing a “butch-looking woman” as someone at risk.

“This is all about recreating and then enforcing appearance, behaviour, making certain that you actually behave and look the way your sex, your gender ought to look,” she said.

Angela Eagle is co-chair of the ghastly All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Global LGBT+, the one that used to be chaired by a certain Crispin Blunt MP.

It shouldn't have any power as an APPG, but it's long had ideas above its station for feeding its loon ideas into government by the backdoor, e.g. self-ID. The APPG and certain members like Dame Eagle have lines of communication with the Select Committee, Ministers and Shadow Ministers.

Eagle and her gang's latest 'inquiry' seeks to do something very interesting - undermine religious faith and belief.

This inquiry will explore existing alliances between communities of faith, religious institutions, government bodies, international institutions, human rights defenders, and LGBT+ advocates as well as opportunities to strengthen and promote the same in the future. It will identify the main challenges and conflicts, and put forward practical recommendations and best practises [sic] to the UK Government on these issues regarding the false dichotomy of freedom of religion or belief and LGBT+ equality. (My emphasis.)

We will seek both oral and written evidence from a range of stakeholders with expertise and experience in this subject. (Who?? Stonewall??)

I'll link the webpage in a min if I can.

LizaBizza · 12/09/2023 10:40

Passport control at public loos?

ok I'll play, how about we all present a valid toilet pass too? And have a bag check and go through a metal detector before we can pee?

Airport security is so fun so much we should replicate it everywhere!

Ooh dear 😒
she is gonna get a shock when she finds out that the UK issue wrong sex passports to males 🙈

Here is an idea
As the bloke has a choice he can choose to not go into the womens toilets.
He can choose not to hold/wave his penis around in the single sex space just because he chooses to.
Its a wild idea but it might catch on

And if it did imagine how his choice would help break gender expectations.

Win, win.

Froodwithatowel · 12/09/2023 10:51

How do women this thick get into positions of responsibility ffs?

WickedSerious · 12/09/2023 10:55

No,no,no.

What we want is for men to stay out of women's public lavatories.

IcakethereforeIam · 12/09/2023 10:57

What's the betting that if we get the EA clarified we're going to get tras blockading loos and performatively demanding id from women trying to go to the bog.

I suppose we'll cross that bridge if we get there.

Dame Angela barks wherever the Leadership, or those with a handful of silver tell her to.
She's extremely useful to them, as long as they throw her a biscuit now and then.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 12/09/2023 11:00

No need to ‘show’ anything in my experience , Ange.

The only people who can’t tell at ten paces are the wilfully blind.

Commonhousewitch · 12/09/2023 02:00

Isn't the whole idealogy of being trans about " recreating and then enforcing appearance, behaviour, making certain that you actually behave and look the way your sex, your gender ought to look,”

Given that women are supposed to BE KIND, any TW going into the women's is failing that behaviour test because it's not a kind thing to do. To undermine the privacy, dignity and safety of women and children. To breach religious rules of many women. To override women's boundaries.

Well I'm banking on repealing the GRA. Rather than try to fix the EA.

I do think it would be quicker, easier and better for women to repeal.

I've got a weekend clear soon. I'm writing to every MP, I'm going to write to local and national papers, I think if there was a concerted effort by many of us, we might at least get a bit further.

I dont really believe theres any need for the GRA, we cant ask anyone if they have one, nothing prevents anyone from marrying whoever they like, it was always a legal fiction and it simply is no longer fit for purpose or required for any purpose.

We don’t talk about this enough imo

Why isn’t it the way to go?

EasternStandard · 12/09/2023 11:08

That’s a general question btw

Maybe we need a thread on it

I dont know generally why we dont talk about it, but it's only recently I've thought about it. I've gone along with fixing the EA. But as that's going to take longer than I thought it would, i thought around the whole thing and came to the conclusion, a better quicker way might be to repeal the GRA.

It might not be quicker as we have to convince a lot of people, who then set in motion repealing an act. But I figured this way and keep on at the EA angle, we might see more sunlight this time next year.

dimorphism · 12/09/2023 11:15

That picture of Eddie Izzard wearing some shocking pink (I think) outfit with tights and boots in the ladies loos queue was brilliant - all the actual women dressed in more or less gender neutral clothing, muted tones, jeans or trousers and a top and looking like they belonged to the female sex and Izzard wearing 'feminine' clothes not appropriate for the setting looking like the only bloke, as he was (and IIRC looking like he was adjusting his man bits too). Someone needs to send that to Angela and ask her if she needs to go to specsavers. It's an Awfully Grand Problem that our political leaders can't see reality.

Although it's not just appearance. Men sound different, move differently, smell different. I'm fairly sure if I closed my eyes and listened to a man and woman walking on a bathroom floor I could tell who was male.

If you've ever been sitting on the loo and a bloke walks in you know most of the time - especially if he talks - you don't have to see him.

Angela is awful - she is undermining safeguarding for her own political career. It's a vile thing to do.

Yes very insightful I agree with you

On the talking part I always find the radio quote instructive in that regard. I mean there’s just a male sounding voice

VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia here has got me really thinking about this concept of higher castes, and why professional women are prepared to tread on the necks of working class women to achieve that status.

My naive thoughts that we're all in it together has been badly shaken by this decade long decent into group status politics.

To see a prominent figure on the Left, a Labour woman to boot, happy to divide and conquer to the detriment of her sisters, is really disconcerting.

My inner antennae on bullying really starts reacting when I read shit like what Eagle has written, and knowing it's now ingrained in the DNA of the Left.

Helleofabore · 12/09/2023 11:27

I am not sure why people think this is an intelligent gotcha as she obviously thinks it is.

It infantilises trans people by saying that they would not respect a law once a law is put in place - in this case if a toilet carried a sign stating clearly that it was for female people and using the legal exceptions available.

whenindoubtgotothelibrary · 12/09/2023 11:35

She really is a useful idiot.

PoseasRadicalActuallyMisogynistic · 12/09/2023 11:37

It’s interesting that they expect trans women (men) to still access facilities where they are banned. If I was banned from somewhere I wouldn’t try and access it , because I don’t break the rules or the law.

I believe that the reason we can't just repeal the GRA is because it is now understood in the international human rights community that in order to have a good human rights record a country must have a legal mechanism for allowing people to change their gender. Despite the fact that this was never contemplated in major treaties such as the European Convention on Human Rights; it has been retrospectively imagined into the treaty by squinting and reading between the lines.

This means that if the UK parliament were to repeal the GRA they would face condemnation from the international human rights community and more than likely a judgment against them in the European Court of Human Rights.

I think this is deeply wrong but I don't want to give the Tories any more ammunition to say we should withdraw from the ECHR which plays a very important role in safeguarding everyone's human rights. The price of abolishing the GRA could be the return of the death penalty, for example. And I think the very public fallout over it would cement the idea that changing your sex is a human right and only the very worst kind of right wing scumbags oppose it.
