National Trust AGM

I’ve received an email from the National Trust inviting me and all other members to vote in their AGM. Does anyone know if there are any things a woman’s rights advocate should vote for or against. Eg TWAW by stealth.

You mistake me Burnttoast, I probably expressed myself badly. I believe that there is a group within the nt that believe in 're-education ' for people that don't agree with then. As evidenced here.
And , as a fellow (ex) church warden, I think that there are factions in the c of e church that believe the same.

Sorry Sausage 😬 I thought you were a supporter of the misguided re education faction. I completely agree with you that they lurk everywhere, including the C of E which won’t exist for much longer in my opinion. Apparently, some within the hierarchy regard their congregation as unwanted “passengers”.

I’m thinking of leaving the church altogether because I don’t agree with Welby et al and it particularly irks me to think about their fat pensions as the push for church closures and the cessation of theological training gathers pace. We already have DIY services at our local church and I’m sorely tempted to get up and “preach” myself. I’d definitely be departing from scripture I can tell you, but since that’s the direction of travel maybe no one would notice 😆

How is this information being “imposed” on you? A few lines on an information board? A passage in a guidebook?

I make the same response to
you as above:

I find it bizarre their wealth wouldn’t be discussed, after all that is what facilitated the existence of the property. What exactly is your objection to a caption saying, for instance, “X Hall was built between 1800 and 1805 by Lord Y. His family had made their fortune investing in Cornish tin mining, ships engaged in the transatlantic slave trade, the East India Company, where he was a director, and through local land holdings.”

What Is “shoehorned”? Why would the guidebook be better without this information? Why do you object to it? Why, perhaps do you feel threatened in some way by this information?

Also, if you visit an NT property from the 18th and 19th c you will see a lot chinoiserie and objects with colonial connections in the decor. You can’t really understand these properties properly without understanding the global connectedness and tastes of their owners. It’s not just a peripheral factoid.

I’m about to visit my local CarpetRight on a nearby industrial estate. As far as I can tell the building is primarily concrete and pressed steel. Any ideas where I can seek out the provenance of the building materials, otherwise I won’t be able to choose a carpet. It’s such a problem these days …

If you were visiting an historic CarpetRight that had, in part, been turned into a museum featuring an information board telling the history of said shop, it would be a very poor museum if it omitted anything about the story of who founded the museum, no?

If you’re not actually interested in the past, that is your prerogative but such fatuous comments do you no favours.

For a supposed christian I suggest you go back to your good book’s basics.

It’s an objectively poor point. It’s a poorly comparison and as such is unconvincing.

Like I said, it's a discussion board, not somewhere where the points made, comparisons drawn and arguments put forward have to meet with anyone's approval, least of all yours.

Well, seeing as they were responding to and arguing against a point I made, on the contrary, I would suggest my “approval” (in terms of attempting to change my mind) was what they were seeking.

And, as I said, on these terms they did themselves no favours.

Is this quibbling all you’ve got. I notice no one has answered my questions upthread about what exactly is wrong with mentioning the source of family wealth in a NT guidebook. I can only assume they can’t think of a good argument.

That’s religious persecution my dear. Please educate yourself immediately or I shall cry victimhood and dye my barnet blue 😆 I’ve filled in my Buzzword Bingo card ten times over from your risible posts.

I’ll be very disappointed if CarpetRight doesn’t have at least 40,000 words on a big sign about the history of their building. Actually, can you enlighten me as to when history actually begins? Ooh, and what if it’s the wrong sort of history? Safe to ignore it then do you reckon? I’m loving your posts by the way. My review will certainly include the words “A right riveting (note to self -must research the history of riveters and riveting ) read 🤣

So much projection going on here. I don’t own a shoe horn and have no opinion on them. You’ve got yourself confused there.

So which buildings must exhibit their history for the delight and education of visitors? Is CarpetRight off your list? If so, why? As I asked previously, when do you think history began? Can you give me a date please? Cheers!

Also, what do you think is scaring me? You say I must feel threatened, but by what exactly? Can you explain because currently I’m not in the least frightened by history. Should I be? Why? Do give a full and frank answer, not one of your dismissive ones or how can I possibly hope to be “educated”?

Okay, I'll take the bait.

Mentioning the source of the wealth is not a problem provided it doesn't over stress one element in pursuit of the current trendy narrative. I recently went to a small (non-NT museum) and honestly, it was very clear that one entire gallery (out of about four) had been used to display every possible DEI item from the collection. It felt forced, false and almost faked.

And TBH I have felt patronised by you on this thread. I have engaged in good faith, but as PP have said this is a discussion board and facetious comments are not only allowed, they are also often welcomed as they lighten the tone.

This isn't a conference with lots of powerpoint presentations and PhD student's supervisors in the audience. We are allowed to take the piss and make jokes.

Can I just say how much I’m enjoying this tightly controlled tantrum being played out on the last few pages

Barbadossunset · 08/09/2023 12:53

Contrast that with Chatsworth House (not NT) which is full of how the Duke of La Di Da and his ancestors themselves built that great house and furnished it with treasures pilfered from across the world.

So you know for a fact that the contents of Chatsworth was stolen rather than paid for?
Interesting. Maybe you should start a restitution campaign for all these stolen goods.

Sure, but that description would make no sense.

I’m chalking this one up as a win.

No one has provided any sensible or compelling argument why sources of wealth and slavery connections shouldn’t be highlighted by the NT.

I wish I could say the ignorance on display here was amusing but it’s all fairly tragic.

I've pointed out that I'd rather they weren't overstressed compared to many other things. It's the 'highlighting' that is the issue, because the bright beam of the 'highlighting' might well obscure equally important things.

I wish I could say the ignorance on display here was amusing but it’s all fairly tragic.
I'm no longe going to engage with someone so patronising. As has been pointed out to you, this is not a bloody university seminar.

They're middle class, they know it all already you see!
Oh, you too, huh.

You both need to learn how to persuade people, not scold and patronise.
