Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Great news! Far better to work towards being inclusive towards all, balancing any competing rights and needs.

I used to work in a place that consistently won awards for being a great employer for gay people. Before Stonewall lost its way. It genuinely was a great employer for gay people (we had lots of out homosexual staff) AND everyone else too. An extremely fair and transparent organisation with a culture of kindness and tolerance in the office.

I don't know if I'm expaining that well.

It's not like we have a charity handing out gold stars and trophies for 'not employing child labour', is it?

Stonewall’s goal isn’t to make sure employers comply with the law and to be non-discriminatory, their goal to get employers to support, promote and enforce Stonewall’s long term campaign objectives.

Removing the words “mother”, “pregnant women”, “breastfeeding” etc from every corporate document in an organisation is not anti-discriminatory behaviour. It’s discriminatory behaviour. It’s hostile behaviour. To women.

I mean why would corporate documents using the word “pregnant women” or “new mother” or “breastfeeding” even matter to a person who genuinely doesn’t believe themselves to be a woman? It’s no skin off their nose right? Provided the document also uses “employees” or some other relevant term, of course. But saying “women” and also using a ‘gender neutral’ term isn’t good enough for Stonewall. They want all normal day to day language for women and female biology eradicated.

It does seem odd to see some of the organisations listed who are wasting their money on this. Victim Support in third place - how do they have spare cash for this? Surely there are more important things to be spending their money on!

Stonewall are not targeting organisations/sectors which are more likely to be discriminatory workplaces or more likely to have issues with homophobia. (Are there any construction firms in the top 100?)

They are targeting organisations with the greatest potential for influence over civic discourse / political decisions -

  • government departments (until Truss / Badenoch put a stop to it in England);
  • higher education institutions;
  • lawyers (to embed their ideology as ‘received wisdom’ in the minds of future members of the judiciary);
  • charities (as fellow campaigners);
  • organisations where there may be a need for a single sex exemption in the provision of services to citizens or a recognition of women’s specific needs, such as the NHS or victim support;
  • critical infrastructure providers (such as banks).

That is such an important point.

This.

All the live long day.

It's strategic.

They said as much. The Denton report said let's get men into women's prisons, because then everything else will fall into place.

The concept of convicted rapists being housed with incarcerated women being so inhumane, if people cave to that, they'll cave to anything. So they go after the MoJ.

And, as has been pointed out, the actual bastions of sexism aren't being touched. It's schools, universities, the government, broadcasters, banks. And places where a normal, decent person would never agree a man should be.

Genderology is the new religion, Stonewall is its church and it is selling indulgences. Send us the money and be cured of homophobia!

Top analogy!🙌

MrsOvertonsWindow · 19/08/2023 14:01

Wonder if there's a list of Stonewall school champions? Because that's where the indoctrination of the young is happening, bullying girls (and boys) out of establishing boundaries, mangling language and accurate definitions, making the school a hostile environment for girls.
Stonewall are a political activist group and schools are meant to be politically impartial - it's enshrined in Education law.

The Government has purged Stonewall would be have been a better headline - and more about the truth.

Yes, honestly! Trying to spin it that the government departments were forced out kicking and screaming.

Fukuraptor · 19/08/2023 14:24

You'd think Victim Support and the various solicitors would recognise a protection racket when they see one. 🤦‍♀️

Goodviibrations · 19/08/2023 14:33

Our local Tesco and Santander proudly blare the sexist homophobic flag so I'm not surprised they're there.

Poor Scottish Government, though. All that bending over backwards yet barely scraping the top 50.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 19/08/2023 14:40

White Collar Protection Racket - pay us money and you'll be seen as our friend, if you don't, you're not our friend anymore.

Oh, well, it's not as if they can send the heavies in and smash the place up a bit. Some raging and screaming over Twitter isn't the same as seven persons with baseball bats and a can of petrol.

There was some kind of award as a few years ago CF pointed out a primary school (on twitter) which was a SW award winner or some such.
I had a look at their public website and the school had uploaded a LGBT project by a child about lesbians as in same sex attracted (1/4 page) and how the girl would grow up to take hormomes and become a "man" (3/4 page)
Girls/boys in that school were being taught that being a girl and same sex attracted made them "straight boys".

Is it obvious from within that they're captured? You seem surprised by it, which makes me wonder what the point is if they aren't pushing Stonewall's values!

This did remind me of the way in some places in some countries cafes and shops have to pay protection money to the Family, for otherwise bad things might happen. It's not so extreme, of course.

Isn't it? It's been a while since I listened to the BBC Nolan Investigates about Stonewall and read the stuff around it. But I'm pretty sure there were institutions using dodgy judgements they had made as evidence to Stonewall of how "inclusive" they were.

And for Stonewall would reply back with suggestions for further improvement.

Schools & colleges

Stonewall was founded on 24 May 1989, one year to the day since Section 28 became law. Section 28 was a piece of legislation that banned the ‘promotion of homosexuality’ by schools and councils across most of the UK, and led to a total suppression of L...

Honestly, not so much. They are quite hot on inclusion and diversity in general, but it's optional information sessions type thing, not mandatory pronouns being announced at the start of meetings or anything like that. In general I think the diversity focus manifests itself really positively at my work. However, I do work from home a lot and the office I visit is one of the smaller ones so maybe I'd notice more if I was in the larger offices more regularly?
