Comedy event cancelled at the Fringe because of Glinner?

I hadn't seen anything about this on X/Twitter previously, but apparently some activists have been putting pressure on the venue and they've cancelled an upcoming event called Comedy Unleashed because one of the comedians is Graham Linehan. How utterly pathetic. https://twitter.com/UnleashedComedy/status/1691476377793409024?s=20 Seems to be organised by/associated with Andrew Doyle, aka Titania McGrath.

If those are the reasons that Leith Arches cancelled Comedy Unleashed’s contract then I cannot WAIT for them to try and prove it in court.

Could be funnier than Stonewall’s Emotional Support Animal.

Combing through the track records of the old sexologists eg John
Money should be interesting too - has the potential to be even more revelatory than Mermaids V Charity Commission.

And that didn’t work out well for Dr J Breslow and Big Soose.

Agree. All for it!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/08/2023 18:28

…but if they are legal they will.

And whether they are legally enforceable depends on whether the court find that Glinner's show was cancelled because of his protected belief, rather than any made up retcconned other reason.

And if it was because of that, their "clauses" might not amount to a row of beans, no? Just like the clauses wouldn't apply to someone cancelling a Christian event "because of potential reputational damage".

AutumnCrow · 16/08/2023 18:28

But WHAT could be funnier that Stonewall's Emotional Support Animal? We still talk about in my house. And I'm not kidding.

Can you find an example of a venue for hire contract that has the sort of potential for reputational damage = cancellation without warning clause you imagine?

Because I’m keen to find actual
examples of when anything like that has been upheld by a court.

Sure. On a very quick online search the Terms and Conditions for venue hire with Better, University of West London and Chartridge Venues all include disrepute clauses.

donnawinters · 16/08/2023 18:29

What's the new venue?

ArabeIIaScott · 16/08/2023 18:31

The new venue? Holiday Inn in Preston.

Please do share, only all the disrepute clauses I’ve found so far go the other way, ie that the venue takes no responsibility if the hirer experiences reputational damage.

A bigger one. All this publicity has been great for ticket sales.

Oh in that case it's in Edinburgh Castle, through the drawbridge, first door on your left.

Sure.

And with his track record, it’s almost certain that they will be able to demonstrate that it was not the mere fact of holding gender critical beliefs that got the event cancelled.

First, it’s hugely unlikely that complaints will have solely referred to his beliefs but will also have referred to his abhorrent behaviour (from which there is plenty to choose from).

Second, contrary to PP claims otherwise, the fact that the venue did not cancel the booking when other gender critical performers were in the line up absolutely would be relevant.

ArabeIIaScott · 16/08/2023 18:34

Sorry, my mistake- it's at Leith Polithe thtation

I found them in five minutes of googling so you can do likewise.

AutumnCrow · 16/08/2023 18:38

I think the 'Terf Blocker' crew hadn't had their crap trackers pick up the show before Linehan's name appeared.

I thought it wasn't good to be certain. You have no idea what ultimately made them cancel. Pure speculation. Its very possible it was simply because they didn't approve of his views.

Mary Bourke isn't exactly world famous for her GC views, is she? Unlike Glinner.

Waitwhat23 · 16/08/2023 18:40

I mean, apart from those posters on here who are in the legal profession, none of us can really say definitively really.

However, I'm reminded of The Stand threads where TRA posters insisted that Joanna Cherry was wrong and The Stand were right....

(And one bizarre poster who insisted that The Stand staff were the only persons on this planet who can 'tell audience members not to move chairs').

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/08/2023 18:40

I'm going to assume from that that you're misrepresenting them as much as you misrepresented Hepwo's post, which you also couldn't be bothered to quote.

So am I.

NicCageisnotNickCave · 16/08/2023 18:42

This is the closest I could find but the venue would have to show the ‘information’ was factual and well, seems unlikely that they had time to assemble anything of any significance, seeing as GL’s views are thoroughly mainstream.

Plus this is contract for hiring a university room (not a bar/gig venue participating in a comedy festival).

Besides the biggest threat to venue staff is surely trans activists? I would have some sympathy if the venue said we don’t have adequate security to keep the Angry Folx at bay…

The ones I’ve found aren’t the slam dunk you are misrepresenting them to be.

Unsurprisingly, otherwise why not just take a screen shot and share it?

Indeed, and that question is explored in Joanna Cherry's senior counsel's note. Spoiler - it's not legally acceptable to directly discriminate for that reason.

If you're a clever strategic thinker: 'ah, let them have their comedy unleashed session, we'll tell our regular customers that we wanted to make sure what we think are ridiculous views got airtime so people could see what they were and make their own minds up. The whole thing will be low-key and go away, and we can all get on with our +++ inclusivity. Chill, everyone'.

Unfortunately, if you're Leith Arches/trans activists and less strategic: 'argh, this is shit, some people are complaining/how dare people with different views from us speak. Stop this now. Shut it down. These views are terrible....'

News outlets (including Radio 4 news): 'oh, this is interesting, here's what's happened and here are the views everyone'.

Quite a few people previously less-interested in this subject: 'what the fuck?'

Exactly!

Even the BBC have started presenting GL’s side in a more balanced manner!
