Australia: Seven police interviewed, station raided over ‘false’ non-binary claims

I shouldn't laugh really. But I did.

Victoria Police officers have searched the force’s Frankston station and interviewed several officers accused of claiming to be non-binary to fraudulently claim more money for civilian clothing allowances.

Chief Commissioner Shane Patton announced a probe into the issue in July, after reports that some male officers had been rorting a discrepancy in the force’s clothing allowance by identifying as non-binary.

Under the scheme, female officers are entitled to claim about $1300 more than male colleagues.

Victoria Police has interviewed seven male officers accused of identifying as non-binary to exploit a $1300 force clothing allowance for women.

Surely they can't put demands on people to conform to certain stereotypes of behaviour that they deem to be an expression of being non-binary? That seems a bit... discriminatory?

Surely the real question is "why do women get more clothing allowance than men ?"
if it was the other way round there would be an outrage

That is a good question.

gogomoto · 15/08/2023 17:46

It could be that a woman wearing the same three outfits in rotation would stand out more than a guy wearing a suit every day, or jeans and a black t shirt for instance. To blend in as plain clothes officers must, women would need to spend more I suspect

StripeySuperNova · 15/08/2023 15:54

I'm with @RoseslnTheHospital :

I would bet on the outcome of this investigation being that the additional $1300 is removed from women, in order to prevent the "non-binary" loophole from being exploited.

Well if it was the other way round I would think that was fair so I this would be fair as well.

Sugarfree23 · 15/08/2023 17:49

I think it's probably something to do with plain clothed officers the men will need suits, jeans, and maybe sports gear. Women will need the above and probably some skirts / dresses depending on where they need to blend in

RoseslnTheHospital · 15/08/2023 17:49

Plain clothes isn't the same as undercover.

How far does that go? I mean if you are overweight it might cost more, if you are unusually tall it might cost more. I think if adults go shopping they work to their budget.

RoseslnTheHospital · 15/08/2023 17:53

I'd like to know the reason for the additional allowance, before deciding that this police force is discriminating against its male employees. If there is a discriminatory dress code that places additional demands on the women staff, then maybe the additional allowance is justified.

AnSolas · 15/08/2023 18:01

Under the scheme, female officers are entitled to claim about $1300 more than male colleagues.

how did they come to that number will be the question

I guess then the police need to create a dress code and conduct list which differs between the two classification of men and other people with a penis.

That is going to be a fun role for some lucky senior employee

Possibly the funniest This Never Happens ever 🤣

And very enlightening on what men do when women get equality/an advantage

Oh my god, this is a literal GENOCIDE! How do we help our Australian siblings? Oh wait, hang on, acab, aren't they? Stand down!

OvaHere · 15/08/2023 18:32

How phobic of the police. Imagine questioning someone's sincerely held inner belief about themselves. Imagining asking them to prove good faith.

😂

CaramelMac · 15/08/2023 18:40

How can you tell if someone is non-binary?

Don't worry, they'll tell you...

anyolddinosaur · 15/08/2023 19:36

Women usually wear bras - men dont. An additional item of clothing so extra clothing allowance, perhaps. Are they going to require people to produce their underwear?

What the hell sort of bras are Australian police ladies wearing that cost A$1300???? That's £660!

An advantage - yes. Equality - no.

Surely women are prepared to buy their own bras, it is hardly a special requirement of the job.

Moonberri · 15/08/2023 20:14

They should just dye their pubes blue. That would do it.

anyolddinosaur · 15/08/2023 20:16

Anyone in plain clothing would be wearing clothing anyway (unless it's a nudist colony) so by that logic no-one needs a clothing allowance at all.

There are also the handbags, of course.

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/08/2023 20:21

Studies show that women spend more on items than men. This is per comparable item. Also, women's dry cleaning is more expensive. Women's hair cuts are. Women's hygiene products. And on and on. And not because women are making different choices, but because things are priced differently.

Has no one heard of Pink Tax? Less material, more expensive.

I obviously dont know what bras Australian women are wearing, but I can definitely tell you, UK ones cost a fucking fortune.
I've had to buy front fasten ones for reasons. I'm 6 bras up and over £250 down.
Not only are they eye wateringly expensive, they are handwash only and I therefore need another 5 or 6.

Did they not stop and think for even one minute before they put that crap out? This is going to be fun!
