Bristol Create Centre - 2 public toilets. One for men and one for men and women.
I know that Bristol is Woke Central, but sometimes it really annoys me.

It's lazy and unthinking behaviour that forgets that women exist. It's easier to change the women's toilets without urinals into a mixed sex toilet, and leave the men's toilet as is. Rather than actually ADD a mixed sex toilet for those who would prefer it, and leave the women's toilets alone.

I would email the centre and ask them for clarification that they only have men's and mixed sex toilets in this building.

ZeldaFighter · 08/08/2023 14:32

I would only email them to inform them that they have directly discriminated against women by failing to provide the same standard of facilities as for men and that you have made a formal complaint to the regulator - the ERC.

Flickersy · 08/08/2023 14:32

The Bristol Create Centre is huge, if it's the one I'm thinking of.

Are you quite certain these are the only two toilets in the building?

I would be extremely surprised if they are (if I am right about which building it is).

yummymctummy · 08/08/2023 14:36

This makes me mad!!! What a great way for perverts to gently integrate into female toilets. What about woman's privacy? What about young girls that may habe taken their period and wish to get sorted in a female only space?

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 08/08/2023 14:48

I thought Brighton was 'woke central'?

Have the wokeists moved their Capital now?

DOBARDAN · 08/08/2023 14:56

The male only toilet sign is stuck to the door whereas the male and female toilet sign is stuck to the wall with the door open, or maybe it's an open walk through, leading to other doors? It would suggest that walking past the male and female toilet sign would take you through to separate male and female toilets? There could be a female only sign on a door elsewhere.

They're branching out. Unfortunately.

No, I'm afraid not Dobardon.

Yes, it is big, Flickersy, and I'm sure, somewhere, there might have been single sex facilities for women but, TBH, I needed the loo, and this was the one I was signposted to. But I am going to complain.

Hmmm, then I am as outraged as you must've been at finding this most unfair set up of toilet facilities. It's disgraceful.

spirit20 · 08/08/2023 16:00

For toilets to be truly safe for women to enter, they need to get rid of urinals. At a theatre in London that I visited recently, they had redesigned one mens toilets to a mixed gender toilets, but left the urinals open, so men were using them, with women queuing up behind them for the cubicles. This wasn't particularly pleasant for anyone, and leaves way too many opportunities for exhibitionists and flashers to get their kicks by exposing themselves to women.

RufustheFactualReindeer · 08/08/2023 17:33

It’s dreadfully unfair

pisses me right off

99victoria · 08/08/2023 17:58

Saw exactly the same setup at the Bus station in Portsmouth last week (by Gunwharf). I was looking for a toilet for my 7 year old granddaughter- decided we'd wait until I could find somewhere safer 😣

WomenShouldStillWinWomensSports · 08/08/2023 18:01

Yeah I'd complain. But you'll get a mealy-mouthed response and it'll probably turn out that the single sex women's toilet is up several flights of stairs and round the Wrekin and that they've got them but made them extremely awkward to use. IDK where you stand if that's the case.

Sausagenbacon · 08/08/2023 19:31

That's what I'm expecting...

Fucking infuriating. Women need more provision than men, not less.

Males get the choice of single sex or womens loos; women have to lump it along with any males that feel like sharing a confined space with vulnerable women.

I cannot believe anyone could possibly argue this was fair.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 08/08/2023 21:05

That is what gets me. It’s neither fair nor sensical and it flies in the face of decades if not centuries of doing things very differently for well known reasons. But suddenly there is mass amnesia and unexplained change and looks of incredulity when the lack of fairness and inconvenience to women is pointed out. A rational explanation for the wholesale change that explains it and accounts for our opposition to it has never been forthcoming.

Gunwharf is still male and female if you are ever in that position again

Exactly!!! Its the amnesia!

I’d forgotten, earlier this year I took this photo of the only toilets in the student bar of a U of Cambridge college.

One for men, one for bar users. I did only see (people who looked like) women using the bar-users’ toilets, though.

I meant to add a second photo of a toilet labelled "Female only" but I had problems attaching the photo.

DrBlackbird · 08/08/2023 23:37

I’m just back from a holiday in Canada. Gender neutral toilets everywhere. Plus, you have to share the same open public space where the sinks are placed to wash your hands i.e without a door, just open to the hall etc

Which means that every toilet has urine on the floor and that there is no private space to do anything you might have felt comfortable doing in a female only space. Including using it as a means to avoid being harassed by a male.

Always women being asked to give things up.

Sausagenbacon · 09/08/2023 14:12

So, I've had an email back saying that this is the 1st stage of making all their toilets gender neutral, when budgets allow.
Before I respond, don't they have to provide at least one single-sex toilet?

Sounds like a bloody awful country to be female in.
