Oh Trinny …

Have just watched the latest episode of her Takeover show on You Tube…

…I’m very disappointed…

… and to think I used to be a fan.😧

I’m sure she has done it to appear cool and relevant but if her target market for Trinny London is women of a certain age, then I think this might have the opposite effect. I for one am certainly reconsidering buying her products now.

I’m deliberately not commenting on the individual concerned who seemed a nice enough person, but speaking very generally, are we meant to applaud Trinny for affirming and enabling people’s delusions?

She did do a little piece to camera at the end acknowledging that some people watching the video “may not be understanding”.

Wasn't she with Nigella's ex (the one photographed grabbing her by the throat in a restaurant)? Not sure about her critical thinking skills tbh, nor the obsession with v necklines.

Do you have a link? Would like to watch before commenting

Another brand to boycott….

So Skyler’s sister is trans too? Or are they using ‘sister’ in the hi-five, sorority sense? Trinny obviously wants to open up her market. Does Skyler work for her?

Skyler seems lovely and desperately self-conscious - the casual comment about getting their adams apple ‘shaved’ 😩The amount of fawning required from everyone surrounding them is quite exhausting. But they obviously work in fashion which is constant ‘dress-up’ time for all involved (except for the grunt workers in the background).

I think Trinny means well and is obviously very fond of Skyler but I can’t help thinking her clientele is going to change after this.

Arealnumber · 08/08/2023 03:51

Trinny is utterly apolitical. Despite the fact that she's fabulously wealthy & privileged she's never even been bothered to hide the fact that she uses take away cups every day for her coffees. I think she might have simultaneously taken a financial hit from the fact that she's broken up from the woman abusing Saatchi whose home she used to live in & who invested heavily in her business, alongside the fact that her products are possibly losing popularity due to their being very expensive but not very high quality. Trinny London grew in popularity massively during lockdown with women watching her videos. With a degree of becoming irrelevant she's becoming a bit desperate to maintain growth of her markets. Her main demographic is certainly older women though & she'll have no idea what a large subsection of those are Terfs who will boycott once word gets out.

Trinny won't have gained many fans from the trans community as every single outfit was ghastly.

This may be a plus point!

Agree with another poster. She may find her market shifts a lot. Good luck to her, maybe there is more money to make there, who knows?

Yes I flinched at the casual mention of adams apple shaving…

Such an extremely attractive person with so little self confidence …

I always worry about the rhetoric in both trans- and non-trans individuals who expect to feel more confident/attractive/“themselves” following a procedure done, let’s face it, for aesthetic not medical reasons. The effect rarely lasts and then they are on to the next operation.

I know Trinny as a makeup range producer is all about the temporary boost but I’m surprised she would put someone who is so obviously mentally fragile under the spotlight like this.

This is a great example of how the Streisand effect has impacted on my perception of trans women.....

Maybe six or seven years ago I would probably have thought this was lovely and sweet. I would have been pleased for the trans woman, who did look very nice in the last reveal - if still obviously a man.....

If I knew this individual, I would probably have quietly acquiesced to sharing a same sex space with her - a loo at work or in the pub, a changing room, included her on 'girls nights outs' and hen do, etc.... I would not have felt entirely comfortable doing so, but I would have done so out of politeness and compassion.

But I know too much now to ever go back. If the trans community hadn't pushed for more and more, hadn't insisted on taking so much away from women, then I would never have educated myself about what actually makes a man a trans woman and what they actually want.

I bet thousands of trans women wish we could just go back to the days when everyone thought they had a female brain trapped in a male body, and were treated accordingly.....

highame · 08/08/2023 07:57

I wonder if transwomen find women's make up doesn't work well for them? I just think there would be intrinsic difference in skin. A transwoman writes a beauty piece for the Times and have often wondered who the target audience is because both women and transwomen are making assumptions that our needs are similar. Are they? Make up has had to make major adjustments for black women because they were ignored, in the West, for years. Are the companies researching, or just on the make. Too few transwomen for them to make a commitment to a makeup range and I assume transwomen would object

donquixotedelamancha · 08/08/2023 08:36

Thing is, it's just makeup and clothes- it has nothing to do with being a woman.

If gender exists in any sense then this is it. I don't see a problem with including men in this regressive, stereotyped nonsense.

MavisMcMinty · 08/08/2023 08:41

Awww, I enjoyed that film, found it quite moving, thanks for posting.

It’s odd that Skyler’s younger sibling is also trans - Mum on the phone call sounded lovely and accepting, but I wonder how she really feels, and does she have any other children who are happy in their “assigned” sex?

There was a whole lot of affirmation going on. But Skyler looks old enough to make their own decisions, I’d’ve viewed this programme featuring a young teen in a very different way.

ScribblingPixie · 08/08/2023 08:57

The comments were on when I saw it and were very gush-y. I'd be interested to know what was added before it was all shut down if anyone saw.

Well, there's a particular word I cannot use here.

That aside I do increasingly feel that some of these males are searching for a type of status and / or attention that's not really within the realm of the male stereotype.

pickledandpuzzled · 08/08/2023 09:09

I'd have been ok with it if not for the 'very special guest' reference at the start.

WarriorN · 08/08/2023 09:11

It's that kind of fawning that's partly feeding the desire to "be" in this "status."

Not allowed to discuss the rest

Farahpascalmoges · 08/08/2023 09:13

None of them "pass". It's all so sick. We are not blind. Men are not women and never can be. I'm tired of shit like this being pushed in the mainstream.

Male skin is a lot thicker.

I think a lot of these companies are shooting themselves in the foot. I went into superdrug a few months back, and some cosmetic concessions had males on the advertising alongside females. It put me off those brands because the first thing that popped into my head was "why would I want to look like a man wearing makeup?" In fact, that's exactly what I don't want to look like. The whole Widow Twanky thing has always been a lurking meme about women and makeup.

It's the same for clothing. I'm female. Something that looks good on a male will be uncomfortable or look dreadful on me. An ad featuring a man wearing a dress means I'm not going to buy. Not because I don't think men should wear dresses, but because the cut won't work on me.

It's bizarre that everything we know about advertising has been thrown out of the window (and in the case of Bud Light, utterly tanked a brand). I can only think it's a new generation who are going to painfully learn how to remake the wheel.

Well yes but according to the rhetoric, this was meant to be about an internal mindset
transformation too. And in the film when Skyler said “this is the woman you can be” Trinny replied “this is the woman you are” which is patently untrue however much this young man wants to believe it.

Imho men who dress up as women aren’t women and won’t ever be women. If they as men, want to dress up in dresses and make up and have hair extensions, good on them, even if they wants to have surgery and take meds if they are above the age of legal consent, but it’s the delusion of calling yourself a woman when you are a man that gets my goat. And I don’t think it’s a healthy delusion for them either.

This will probably sound very pompous and old-fashioned, and I hope it doesn’t sound patronising, but I would urge any young person who is confused about their identity to get out of their own heads; stop obsessing about their appearance, chuck out their full length mirror, go and volunteer with people less fortunate than themselves, focus on others, and work on their character, not their looks.

He’s still a bloke in a dress.

I’m digressing slightly from the original post, but 30 plus years ago, it was acceptable ‘amusement’ for a white man to dress up and pretend to be black with exaggerated makeup emphasising what people perceived as stereotypical black features - eyes, lips etc. We are now quite rightly aware how offensive, unacceptable and patronising this sort of entertainment is to a whole group of society.

As a female, I actually feel the same about drag queens. Why is it acceptable for a bloke to dress up as a woman with exaggerated makeup and over sexualised mannerisms for entertainment? To me, DQ are mocking women, portraying than as stupid tarts. No ‘real’ woman dresses or behaves like that just as no black person dressed or behaved like the characters on the Black and White Minstrel Show.

Why have we not moved on and past this daft ‘culture’?
Blackface is unacceptable, so Womanface should be too.
