Loads of news outlets reporting this story :

Bud Light boycott over trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney hits beer giant's sales - BBC News

BBC being its usual self and calling him 'Ms' 🙄

But good that companies might start learning the financial cost of promoting this insulting nonsense.

Bud Light

Bud Light boycott over trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney hits beer giant's sales

But performance by parent company AB/Inbev holds up better than expected.

BBC also conflated not supporting the likes of Mulvaney with mocking climate change or the rights of minorities... 🙄

Wetandhorrible · 03/08/2023 20:06

When did we lose the idea that individual adults could think about an individual issue and consider it on its merits, without this ridiculous "if you don't think this, that must mean you don't think this": it makes no sense!!

inverness123 · 03/08/2023 20:20

Unfortunately I think most of the people boycotting Bud over this are actually the crazy American right-wing extremists that people love to accuse feminists of being funded by. I don’t think this boycott is driven by feminists concerned about women’s rights but homophonic Trump-supporters. It’s mostly not about the outrageous misogyny of his woman-face act but the fact that he’s camp and a darling of the left.

I guess you’ve got to take wins where you can, but I hate being lumped with people like that …

FrippEnos · 03/08/2023 20:23

IMO the ban on Bud light is more because Budweiser decided to let the person in charge of the advertising bad mouth their main customer base, which is never a good idea.

inverness123 · 03/08/2023 20:24

Oops … homophobic trump supporters, not homophonic …

ReleasetheCrackHen · 03/08/2023 20:25

It’s all spin. The boycott isn’t affecting anything with Bud Light. It’s been on a steady decline in popularity since 2008. The recent drop is in line with that trend line. There’s been no additional financial cost to the company Anhauser-Busch as it’s one of over 100 brands of beer they sell.

meowgender · 03/08/2023 20:28

Agreed, the right-wing nuts over there who are whipping out their six-shooters and blasting away packs of Bud Light in protest would probably be doing the same if the cans had "Support Women's Reproductive Rights" printed on them.

This. It's lazy and the sign someone has no actual argument to make.

Yep. I have totally distanced myself from this boycott for exactly this reason. As far as I'm concerned, it's just a talking point to highlight where some of my views (in this case that TWANW) align with those of others. There are plenty of people who believe TWANW but the loudest voice here is clearly the homophobic/transphobic "it's all an abomination" type voice.

I'll stick to pointing out why it's utterly inappropriate for DM to promote Nike Sports bras and the adaptation of Judy Blume's book with an interview about how DM is feeling about periods now that DM is growing from a "girl" to a "woman".

Louloulouenna · 03/08/2023 20:48

@ReleasetheCrackHen Bud light sales dropped a whopping 23% in the wake of the Dylan Mulvaney endorsement, one of the biggest drops ever recorded by a major brand and far more dramatic than the continuation of a downward trend. Sales of other light beers have risen to compensate as customers switched brands.

Ban ?

Who's banned it and why ?

aweegc · 03/08/2023 20:56

This boycott seems to have been propelled, if not actually started by Matt Walsh.

I would have been interested to see what would have happened if he'd included Nike in his monologues about DM. Would those boycotting Bud Light have switched to Adidas?

As an aside, there does seem to be a boycott of BL going on because apparently sales of beers next to BL on the shelves/where BL was have increased during this time.

nauticant · 03/08/2023 21:09

I doubt it. Anheuser-Busch pushing Mulvaney onto Bud Light consumers was very anti-brand and done in a way that slighted them. Nike pushing similar messages to their consumers is very on-brand.

Louloulouenna · 03/08/2023 21:11

I don’t care whether it’s come from a right wing perspective, all I care about is that hopefully brands will think twice before teaming up with someone like Dylan Mulvaney.

It seems that men (the majority of Bud Light’s customer base) are more vocal and angrier and ultimately more successful in their boycotts.

The data doesn’t match your description. This was posted by another MN on the other thread who agrees with me.

The red arrow points to the drop after the DM launch. It’s not whopping, biggest ever or even remotely a tad more dramatic than the downward trend. In fact, if you had never heard of DM and a boycott, you would be hard pressed to locate any evidence of a boycott.

I'm not really comfortable with boycotting a brand just because they used a trans person in an advert for beer. Anyone can drink beer. Anyone can advertise it.

I think it verges into transphobia if you're celebrating a brand doing less well because they used a trans person. Are we saying no trans people are ever allowed to appear in advertisements? I hope not.

Same here. It’s so weird to have the attitude that if a trans person is in an ad that it’s ‘insulting nonsense.’

Likewise. She called the previous brand advertising 'fratty', which IIRC is a sort of juvenile humour, and talked about finding new customers. She, the marketing wonk, did far more damage than Mulvaney.

Louloulouenna · 03/08/2023 21:39

This graph is not labelled and bears no relation to the actual sales figures for Bud Light. Many people find DM’s take on “girlhood” insulting and are free to choose their beer accordingly.

No, it’s stock value, as in what really matters and it reflects the (already expected) drop in stock value showing that the boycott is having no effect on the company’s bottom line or financials whatsoever.

Also the sales numbers in the news don’t reflect all the sales- ie the sale of draft Bud Light to stadiums, restaurants and pubs. That’s part of the spin.

BlueIbex · 03/08/2023 21:45

I get that. But Dylan specifically markets Dylan's brand on mocking women, or how Dylan perceives women.

Sorry, that was meant in reply to Flickersy.

EightMonthsScared · 03/08/2023 21:57

I'm not bothered that somebody trans was in an advert.

It bothers me that they (a fully grown person) refer to their 'girlhood' and perform femininity as though they are a toddler. Extremely creepy behaviour.

Louloulouenna · 03/08/2023 21:58

The graph shows the share price of the parent company of Bud Light so is largely irrelevant to this discussion. The poster wrote that the “data didn’t match” my description of Bud Light sales falling almost a quarter following the DM endorsement as was revealed in the company’s recent q2 results. Please direct me to the data which doesn’t support this fact.

Obviously a share price is a measure of the expected future earnings of a company, not historical sales.
