The White Walkers are zombies basically, raised from the dead by the Night King. A huge unkillable army, and every human (or dragon or horse) killed becomes another White Walker.

Here is the Night King raising newly killed armies from the dead, with his White Dragon, and converting a living baby into… not quite sure what happened to all the boy babies he converted, that was never explained and they weren’t in any of the battle scenes.
