Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Trying to capture material reality in a slogan

I've been trying to devise a brief, memorable GC phrase that simultaneously sums up why we are GC and offers a way forward without being antagonistic.

(Slight digression: when I first heard Trans Women Are Women, I understood it as the equivalent of an old-fashioned dog-lover's statement: 'Dogs are people'. He didn't expect his dogs to eat with spoons, but he recognised they had traits resembling humans' - e.g. sociability, loyalty - that made him feel as if they were people.)

A literal and incredible interpretation of the TWAW slogan as 'Trans Women really are Adult Human Females' has combined with male entitlement to be intractable to reason.
That biology is fixed seems to be anathema and misunderstood.

However it is attitudes around sex and gender that result in brutal misogyny; and in unhappy teens trying to identify out of their sex. It's not the biology but the ecology. And that could, should change.

'We can't change Biology, let's work on Ecology'.
'Biology is fixed; let's change what we can.'
'You can't change your sex, but you can wear it with pride.' 'Be the best trans you can; make life safe for Adult Human Females.'

Not very catchy, I know. I think I'm wasting my time. What I was hoping to come up with was something that politicians could truthfully say with conviction...

This is a really interesting question. Something that's been on my mind recently is whether or not trans rights and women's rights are actually opposed. I don't think they are - but it's clear that some of the demands from TRAs do infringe upon women's rights (see: Anne and the changing room).

In this example, trans people do have the right to access safe spaces to get changed. They may not feel/be safe in the men's changing rooms, but that does not negate women's right to have access to a "safe", single sex changing rooms. In this case, a third space (i.e. unisex changing room) meets the safety and dignity needs of both groups.

Could a slogan that feeds into this, along the lines of "trans rights but not at the expense of women's/sex-based rights" work?

I'm kind. Just not blind.

AutumnCrow · 26/07/2023 15:38

We all have rights, dude, not just you.

PurpleBugz · 26/07/2023 15:47

I like "women won't wheesht" (spelling?).

I'm not Scottish so don't know if other parts of uk can adopt it?

Or something like "women's rights don't come after men's feelings"

PurpleBugz · 26/07/2023 15:48

Or the line from that awesome poem "I am not a dress"

popebishop · 26/07/2023 16:05

"Sex exists, and sometimes it matters" is good enough for me.
"If you can't see sex, you can't see sexism" also.
Or even "To show respect to all people, let's not confuse sex and gender" - if people adhered to that we wouldn't be where we are!

nonman · 26/07/2023 16:09

Transwomen are men,
Transwomen rely on gender stereotypes,
gender stereotypes are harmful to women and men.
Gender stereotypes are a tool of the patriarchy.
Trans women are the patriarchy writ large.

nonman · 26/07/2023 16:10

I don’t like women women won’t wheeesht,
when I first saw it I thought it was pro trans women because I didn’t understand what it meant

Tallisker · 26/07/2023 16:11

Woman
Adult Human Female

Imicola · 26/07/2023 16:25

I like transwomen are transwomen. Simple and to the point, they are not and never will be women. But... probably not quite what you are after!

BigMaggieShoes · 26/07/2023 16:30

What about:
"It's intrusion not inclusion"

villamariavintrapp · 26/07/2023 16:43

Women's rights are human rights
No man is a woman

IwantToRetire · 26/07/2023 16:45

None of us can change our sex, but we can challenge the stereotypes of gender

I wanted to add something like to be who we want to be

Maybe it just needs the word roles

A bit long I know.

bellinisurge · 26/07/2023 16:50

I like No Man is a Woman.

See also "I'd rather be rude than a liar". I have removed Magdalen's original "fucking liar" because I am kind.

Your spelling is correct. And it has been adopted around the world so have at it!

mrshoho · 26/07/2023 16:51

Men are from Venus
Women are from Mars
Transmen and transwomen are from Uranus

Lorrries · 26/07/2023 17:15

I agree that "Sex exists, and sometimes it matters" is good - short and to the point.
"Let's get real - sex exists, and it makes a difference."

Lavenderfowl · 26/07/2023 17:17

Mansplaining won’t make you a woman

Lorrries · 26/07/2023 17:20

I think it's important to use simple language everyone can understand, or the message will just put people off. Talking about "gender" as something different from sex will confuse lots of people. "Mansplaining" too I think"

Lorrries · 26/07/2023 17:21

"A man can dress like a woman, but he can't actually be one".

BitingKat · 26/07/2023 17:23

Got a Y? Then you're a guy!

As a Kiwi, this doesn’t mean anything to me. I don’t know what it means. I’ve seen it often enough to get a feel for what I think it might mean, but I still don’t actually know what that word means.

Lavenderfowl · 26/07/2023 17:31

Wheesht means shut up

mirax · 26/07/2023 17:32

CompleteGinasaur · 26/07/2023 15:37

I'm kind. Just not blind.

A winner! Take a bow, Madame.

CrazyArmadilloLady · 26/07/2023 17:33

Lavenderfowl · 26/07/2023 17:31

Wheesht means shut up

Thank you.

It’s not a meaningful phrase for me.
