It’ll be interesting to see if Sky decide to run with this as an issue now they’ve seen the feedback.

anderson knows damn well their position is incoherent & indefensible. I expect he’d like to row back because tbh he doesn’t strike me as zealot about it (unlike the chair who jumped on board the trans train jan goofing) but he’s going to find that very difficult.

Beth was brilliant and really exposed Iain for the pathetic weasel he is. But I wish she'd answered better when he asked her if trans people be banned from sport. No, Iain, they can compete in the correct sex class.

JoyceMeadowcroft1 · 21/07/2023 08:57

I really enjoyed this interview. As someone who is GC and follows media and social media, I often feel tired of listening as nothing new comes up for me or, in my view, the public. Maybe because Beth is an excellent interviewer, or maybe because IA is new to me.

TRAs are very aware that they are at risk of being boxed in to a corner. If they expose 'self id' as being nothing more than a person simply saying how they feel, then they risk people saying, 'well, what's that got to do with sex, and therefore how can that possibly mean you should access single sex providion'. If they say that gender identity is something more than feelings, they then head towards the need for some test of differentiation between 'common old, everyday' feelings and 'special, unique to trans people' feelings.

I think IA knows this, and was struggling as a result.

No debate really was their best (and only real) option.

What a peculiarly inarticulate man!
Starting every answer with 'sooooo..' to give him time to think.

Considering their "strategy" is they "want to have a conversation" you would think he would be able to do precisely that!

Have the conversation man!

Great interviewing from Beth Rigby.

Worth bearing in mind Anderson is a big Labour supporter. And is also selling the Labour Sex Fudge.

I wish transing children had been brought up. Seems an enormous elephant in the room.

popebishop · 21/07/2023 09:05

It's a bit like 'let us have this small insignificant peice of paperwork that will be of no interest to anyone' .. and then 'this paperwork now proves philosophically and legally that men can become women and you must re-structure the entire society around it.'

Every facet of gender ideology relies on this sort of sleight of hand. It's remarkable (and depressing that so many are taken in by it).

Anderson was a long time Tory member who supported Liz Truss for leader. He only switched over to Labour a few months ago.

Helleofabore · 21/07/2023 09:07

I would love to know what questions Beth had left. She had to keep coming back to get some answers to her questions. She must have had a heap unasked.

RealityFan · 21/07/2023 09:08

As said before, Starmer needs to look at this, and learn. The shark has been jumped. The age of No Debate is well and truly over...how do we think the like of Cathy Newman interviewing Iain even just a year ago would have compared (clue, she would have let him walk all over her)?

If this is the best that the weaponised propagandists for TRA can manage, and "best" is a contradiction in terms based on that, Starmer has no chance to turn word salads and thought terminating clichés into reasonable policies and understandable and fair concepts.

Time for Starmer to again perform one of his now famous and totally expected u-turns, and pivot to reality.

Because if the Tories do go down the schools social transitioning debate wholeheartedly and delay the trans conversion ban, but Starmer objects, to push to keep the current confused status quo, I believe he'll learn to regret this.

He needs to watch this interview, and wake up and smell the coffee, pronto.

Make no mistake, Sunak will absolutely wring this for all it's worth ahead of the GE.

Yes. Publically and significantly, I think.

He was crumbling so badly!

Very interesting interview but I wish Beth had asked if he believes that women that don’t want male bodied people of any sort in their single sex spaces are transphobic. Also are there some men that don’t actually believe themselves to be women but get sexual pleasure from dressing as one and whether these people should be in female single sex spaces.

Simon Edge has pointed out that you can always spot someone who's been Stonewall-trained because they refer to the "Equalities Act" rather than the "Equality Act". Makes me wonder if Stonewall do it deliberately or whether it's a mistake.

I haven't watched the whole thing, but luckily there are lots of short clips on Twitter. This clip where Beth Rigby shows him a picture of Lia Thomas winning a gold medal and the two women who came second and third gives a pretty good idea of his incoherence when asked a straight question:

https://twitter.com/treesey/status/1682135263961657346

He sure is a weaselly one! I am fed of hearing 'we need to have a calm conversation' which has been trotted out by various politicians for a number of years now. No one ever gets pinned down to a date when that could actually happen.

Also that clip has this bit at 0.59:

BR: But this is a problem, isn't it? Do you see this as a problem?

IA: Look, so I think it's a problem in terms of the perception of the conversation but the way in which w..

That photo does a good job in illustrating the unfairness. We just need an interviewer to point out that if Lia Thomas lined up in speedos rather than a women's swimsuit, everyone would be pointing out that 'He's a man' (gotta love KJK for shouting that out!)

Maybe Qs for that follow up interview. I wonder if Iain is up for that after the flaying he took yesterday.

One side takeaway yesterday, was just how poor not just this fellow, but so many public figures are when questioned deeply.

There's just no depth to so much of what laughingly classes itself as public discourse these days.

It's not ironic in anyway that those individuals with properly carefully thought out views and consistent internal logics fare best. I'm talking the likes of Helen Joyce.

I laughed when Trump trotted out his fake news tropes in 2016. Just six years later, it's self evident in performances like Iain's yesterday. And so many in public life, increasingly on the left.

OvaHere · 21/07/2023 09:34

I assume by 'perception of the conversation' he means we are no longer in control of the narrative here and that's a problem for us.

Stonewall literally do not care that countless women and girls are being cheated out of sporting opportunities, medals, records, sponsorships etc.

They only care that the general public are saying it's not fair and making a fuss instead repeating the lie that we must all go along with this to #bekind.

Boiledbeetle · 21/07/2023 09:34

Helleofabore · 21/07/2023 08:03

he said he hoped to be able to calm them!

Yes. This was very clear. He wanted to assure them. While upholding the fact that those male people are the very women he considered should be there.

Because the GRC.

Then when that was exposed, he went for the ‘look at the census’!

He literally had his lie exposed then pivoted to ‘but it is so few’!

it is a script. We all know it. We have all argued against people who deploy it.

He was obviously channelling his Inner Michael Winner with his calm them comment. He might have all as said

"Calm down dear "

AlisonDonut · 21/07/2023 09:46

Now that we have Operation Let Them Speak underway, will everyone now get them on and give them a grilling or will they now go to ground?

He had the ideal opportunity to say 'we got it wrong' but he didn't. He reaffirming that 'my community' are his priority. And that doesn't include gay, lesbians or bisexual people.

I'm betting 'go to ground'.

You've seen Helen Joyce's proposition that the sunk costs amongst the elites running institutions and big corporations are so large and so damaging, that noone on that side can admit mistakes have been made.

Least of all this fellow. Stonewall admit mistakes were made, then so do Labour have to.

No, the leftist elites continue strapping themselves into the bad ship Trans as it veers off course.

But there's no alternative now to the likes of Stonewall having to come into the light. No Debate is over.

flyingbuttress43 · 21/07/2023 10:11

A prime example of trying to nail jelly to a wall. Never trust someone who, when asked a direct question, starts nearly every answer with "so....".

Beth did really well, except for not being able to push the sports debate to its logical conclusion but I suppose the interview was time limited.

ooh that's unfortunate! Not his best look.

Abhannmor · 21/07/2023 10:28

Q. Should men be allowed to compete against women?
A. I've got rainbow shoelaces.

Or something. I couldn't listen anymore.
Piffle , waffle and flannel.

Helleofabore · 21/07/2023 10:29

Beth did a lot of looking at that image though. I suspect that she did get the message across to the viewers by doing that

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 21/07/2023 10:34

Re the Lia Thomas picture, I liked her explicit question ‘how would you feel if you were one of the women in silver or bronze position?’

sweaty weasel was of course unable to answer

’elite sports are addressing this individually’

do men become not men if they’re wearing a netball skirt or football studs then?

and it’s not just about elite sports (don’t think I missed that little evasion). Amateur sportswomen also deserve fairness, which means no bloody men
