Could you be 'de-banked' for being gender-critical?

heckmuffin · 18/07/2023 18:24

I'm sure Nigel Farage has very few fans here. However, in the light of his bank, Coutts, closing his bank accounts due to his political beliefs, could this happen to gender-critical women too?

Farage has obtained documents from Coutts which make it clear that the bank gave him the boot because his views didn't align with their 'inclusive' purpose.

I wonder if GC women such as Posie Parker have had similar issues? Or if this is something that could happen? Believing in humans being a sexually dimorphic species is, as we all know, 'not inclusive'.

I've never known society to be this authoritarian (and I lived through the Thatcher years.)

100% agree.
It's truly frightening.

The BBC were falling over themselves to sneer at Farage's claims. Which have turned out to be true. Impartial my @r$€.

First they came for the Brexiteers, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Brexiteer.
Then they came for the anti-vaxers, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not an anti-vaxer.

And so on...

Even Courts has said they have investigated claims of funds from Russia, and have found no evidence. Also the claim made in parliament about it has never been repeated outwith that environment. Probably due to the fact the NF would sue if it were.

Yes. I wonder if the BBC will apologise - not holding my breath.

Barbadossunset · 19/07/2023 15:10

Did Coutts not realise NF would kick up a fuss? Maybe they thought with the support of the BBC who swallowed the not enough money story hook, line & sinker ( or pretended to), they would get away with it.

duvetonathunderynight · 19/07/2023 15:17

Sorry to jump in with a dumb question, but what happens when a bank closes your account? Do you lose your money? Can you take your money to another provider?

I don't agree with banks closing accounts based on personal views either way, just unclear on whether it means the account holder was inconvenienced or if they lost out financially.

WallaceinAnderland · 19/07/2023 15:43

You would have to change banks. The problem is when they all go the same way.

DysonSpheres · 19/07/2023 16:04

I was shocked about what happened to the Canadian Truckers, it completely changed my view of Canada, but the media did a brilliant job of painting the Truckers as racist nazis. It worked because most people just shrugged their shoulders to the government freezing not just Trucker bank accounts and the accounts of shop keepers helping them but froze their Just Giving donations.

Now if they could do that to them they can do it to anyone. But was anyone fussed? No. People are sleep walking. People today aren't bothered about the removal of cash and with that a great deal of human freedom. Freedoms we've had since almost forever. They will passively accept it and keep purchasing in shops that only take cards.

Already I've seen people using bartering online but what happens when you have nothing to barter?

NewNameNigel · 19/07/2023 16:13

Are the documents available anywhere to read? All I can find its "Nigel Farage claims" and I don't trust his word. I don't have twitter, are the documents there?

DysonSpheres · 19/07/2023 16:14

Or what happens when you're a woman without a bank account and nothing to barter?

Selective out-of-context leaks from Farage, and the bank silent because of its duty of confidentiality.

They did. They had it down as one of the risks of exiting him. But they decided to go down the "when he tells everyone, we'll just lie" route. Not that clever really.

Yes. I wonder if NF has got grounds for a court case - presumably the truth would come out then.

That's not true. You keep making false statements. There is a dossier of about 40 pages of meeting notes.
@NewNameNigel I'll see if I can find them.

Here you go. There are 36 pages. It's not laid out as straightforward as the document I read, but if you scroll down, it's split into 2 parts. The first 7 pages and then the rest further down.

MPs call for NatWest's licence to be reviewed over Nigel Farage row

A bombshell dossier, handed to MailOnline, has laid bare the reasons for Mr Farage, the ex-Ukip leader, being ditched as a Coutts customer.

It is particularly frightening that they were prepared to put it in writing to each other and thus within reach of a SAR. It shows they were not afraid of this coming out, and felt they were doing nothing wrong.

I don't think so, I think they were too stupid to realise that it could come out as part of a SAR.

When I've slagged someone off, I always start a new email and refer to our previous conversation and then use he or she. So there's no connection to any previous correspondence with their name, so it doesn't need to be disclosed as part of a SAR.

Where I work people are fairly unanimously anti-Brexit, but I don't think they'd be stupid enough to write anything like this about anyone!

lieselotte · 19/07/2023 17:11

Reviewing their entire licence seems overkill to me. However a little training on data protection and regulatory requirements for financial services providers, especially with the Consumer Duty being introduced next Monday (that's all I know, I am not a financial services lawyer!) might not go amiss!

No the bank is silent because it was found out. It was quite happy to say that Farage didn't meet their financial requirements, but now that's been found to be at least partly a fib, they are hiding behind confidentiality. Yeah right.

Oh and before someone comes in to correct me, the Consumer Duty comes in on 31st, which is the Monday after next, not next Monday, I can't count Grin
