Jaffa cakes are identified as biscuits in my supermarket. But are they cakes? And if they are biscuits then is the dunking of Jaffa cakes in tea acceptable?

Please explain "too much cream"?

I believe it's the mythical cousin of the equally mythical "Leftover Wine." Honestly, some people will believe anything.

😂

My MiL made a wedding cake once for a family member, so quite an important gig as cakery goes. It was one of them there red velvet things. She decided to make it without eggs and regular flour so that she could 'try some of it' as she'd put herself on a strange diet. Apparently the bride and groom were made aware of this the day before but went 'wet lettuce'.

Adult DSD and I were sitting next to each other at the wedding reception as we tried it, and let's just say that the experience of trying to chew and swallow one mouthful of this turgid loam while still smiling politely brought us closer together in adversity.

Feminist moral-of-the-tale. This perfectly illustrates female socialisation: smile and try to be polite, even when you are being served up something revolting.

Turgid Loam cake is hugely underrated.

See also Moist Crumb.

I've also read the phrase 'leftover roast potatoes'. 🤷🏻‍♀️

IcakethereforeIam · 11/07/2023 14:02

Jaffa cakes are abos (assigned biscuit on shelf(shelf id?)) but went to court and got a crc (cake recognition certificate) like tea cakes (no cake without the tea) but not tea cakes that, I think, are a fruity bread roll.

Shelf id! Grin So no dunking with a crc.

Yeah that's as likely as left over Yorkshire puddings and left over gravy.

As if that's ever happened in my house!

Oh I didn't realise you had an ology in cakes as well! You truly are the font of all cake related knowledge although your questioning on the standing of Apple cake makes me wonder if you acquired your ology by nefarious means. I mean who puts Apple's in a cake? That's not an actual thing. Is it?

(Poor Nancy she'll be checking out the social media etc on her news and is going to be so disappointed when she gets to mumsnet!)

Whether they're biscuits or cakes, they're still sinful. In fact, I'd add anything chocolate orange flavoured to the pyre.

SinnerBoy · 11/07/2023 14:24

I feel very sad, because I've just started a keto diet, because of high blood pressure and being a fat knacker.

You are all torturing me with talk and pictures of lovely cakes.

sniff

Chersfrozenface · 11/07/2023 14:30

There's a traditional variant on Welsh cakes where you put in grated apple instead of currants (cheaper, what with apples being grown locally, unlike grapes).

Speaking of Welsh cakes, anyone who ever visits Cardiff, go to Bakestones in the indoor market. Drool!

I am in similar situation... it's fine.... go and look at Nigella's olive oil chocolate cake with almond meal. It ought to come with 'evil' written on it, tis fantastic.

IcakethereforeIam · 11/07/2023 14:33

I think somewhere has opened in Saundersfoot that's riffing on Welsh cakes. I'm off to Pembrokeshire soon, and I'm going to check it out. And graffiti some pebbles.

Chersfrozenface · 11/07/2023 14:39

And I'm off to Cornwall, where I will be searching out saffron buns.

IcakethereforeIam · 11/07/2023 14:50

Ooh, would you consider having a cornish split for me?

Emotionalsupportviper · 11/07/2023 14:58

JanesLittleGirl · 11/07/2023 12:51

I now have a mental image of a bowl of cream-filled chocolate profiteroles with so much double cream poured over them that it's lapping the edge of the bowl.

Your bowl obviously isn't big enough.

Be pleased to. Might even post a photo.

Just find some celery that identifies as cake - job done. After all that's exactly the same thing...

Emotionalsupportviper · 11/07/2023 15:02

All this talk of "too much cream" and "leftover "wine, yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes - come on!

We're gender critical here - that means we don't believe fairy stories.

(Honestly - some people must just think our heids button up the back or summit 🙄)

viques · 11/07/2023 15:03

I used to volunteer at a garden tea room on the odd Sunday and I since I am no longer bound by their code of confidentiality I can reveal that lemon drizzle was always the first cake to sell out. And also that some people were very demanding and forward in asking for the extra crusty drizzled bits. Especially if they fell off the cake slice but they considered them part of their portion.

How about cake that identifies as celery? Or, it's not for me, but < blergh> carrot cake is carrot.

Damn right they're part of my portion.

LEMON DRIZZLE IS THE BEST CAKE!

(Coffee and walnut is pretty good ,too)

In the aforementioned garden tea room we used to celebrate apple day every autumn , and the tradition was that each of the volunteers would bring in an apple themed cake. I have to say there were some stunners. One volunteer was German and used to bring a couple of amazing apple cakes in.

My own apple themed cake won first prize at our local town show, the Mayor ( judge) himself said it was the best cake he had ever eaten , and I think it is fair to say he had eaten a few in his time. I haven’t made it for a few years, because it is a complete faff, my go to cake these days is a lot simpler.
