I don’t know if this has had a thread already as this podcast is from 2022 but if you haven’t seen it definitely worth watching.
Peter Boghossian delves in to a news article which claims that the dinosaur emoji was used by British ‘terfs’ as a way to attack the part of the Trans community who love dinosaurs- how they are fighting against this ‘appropriation’ which is compared to Nazi’s appropriation of the swastika and also that crocodile’s (descendants of dinosaurs) are part of the non-binary community.

Good grief.

I thought it was because we were "Rights hoarding dinosaurs".

I think there was a thread but it was ages ago.

ThreeLocusts · 06/07/2023 11:17

I assume Boghossian is American? The 'rights-hoarding dinosaur' phrase was coined by a British politician who is unlikely to have name recognition in the US. So an American journalist would be liable to misinterpret the allusion, I guess?

Yeah - I dare say he's never heard of David Lammy. It's intriguing that this whole other dinosaur story has evolved though, I wonder how?

PinkFootstool · 06/07/2023 11:35

They can take my dinosaur jumpers from cold dead GC fingers.

To be fair, most people in the UK have never heard of David Lammy.

Yeah, that labour chappy whose name I can't remember called us that.

Only the lucky ones. I am not one of them :(

Mochudubh · 06/07/2023 13:12

I can't listen to the podcast just now but didn't the whole dinosaur thing came about purely because of Lammy's comments? Then the Terven adopted and ran with it, it wasn't a "thing" before. Am I right?

So, the TRAs have come up with some weird conspiracy theory about cultural appropriation of dinosaurs or something? I mean, they come out with some bizarre stuff but that's bonkers even for them.

If I'm barking up the wrong tree, will someone please explain because my brain hurts.

Xoxoxoxoxoxox · 06/07/2023 15:05

Yes, the dinosaur emoji was because of David Lammy’s ‘rights hoarding dinosaurs’ comments- didn’t he also say that transwomen have a cervix?
In the podcast Peter Boghossian does explore the Brit roots of the dinosaur emoji but it’s NPR the American national radio station who ran the original story about dino emoji’s upsetting the trans dinosaur enthusiast community.

Yes. Lammy said that cervixes could be constructed from "hormones and things".

ReeseWitherfork · 06/07/2023 15:12

Hang on…. Crocodiles are part of the non binary community? I need more information.

Now this is the kind of debate I like. Mary Poppins and the mum from the film... which one would be a TERF and which a TRA? Both, neither?

Tervosaurus rights are dinosaur rights! How very lacertaphobic of him.

Well the mum was already a suffragette so she was effectively the proto-celeb-TERF.

I have reservations about Mary, she thought a carousel horse could identify as a horse...
