People's History Museum & Sex Matters

Sorry I can't see if there's another thread on this.

Sex Matters had a board meeting in the People's History Museum this week. It has now released a statement grovelling to its trans and non binary community about how sorry they are for not doing their 'due diligence' and letting in people who 'don't share their values'. That would be women, then? Women aren't allowed in the People's History Museum to talk about women's issues? Because you're a 'welcoming and inclusive space'? Right-o.

Statements capitulating to the mob aren't anything new obviously, but this has to be one of the worst I've seen.

I think SM are going to try and book another event there. It’s going to be a weird one because if they turn them down it could lead to all sorts of legal issues.

Oh I really hope so! When is this nonsense going to end?

What is it with MN and jam and pickle?

You're all condiment crazy!

JoodyBlue · 30/06/2023 12:03

It is the forced teaming of the TQI+ I think that means people can't think clearly any more. I was having a discussion with my friend about Pride. She said she can see the issues from a woman's viewpoint. But "it is all about intersectionality..." and then got confused and because she is my friend I didn't press. I think the continual bandying around of this term is enabling really muddled thinking. Yes many people lack equality of opportunitiy through particular traits. We can look at that as a society without losing our minds like this!! We need to very very clear on each issue, without all this forced teaming together.

The Sex Matters statement also mentions how well-treated they were by museum staff and how nice everyone was, which again makes a mockery of the museum's claims.

Surely any 'allies' working in the building would have known who Sex Matters were and kicked off beforehand? No? It points to them not knowing who they were and anticipating no controversy.

Quite how they didn't know what they were wading into here seems absurd.

Nah, preserves. Jams and pickles are preserves. Very WI of us all.

Or it points to their having been fine having a human rights campaign group attending until afterwards when people kicked off on social media and they panicked and did a u-turn.

TRAs can be very aggressive and no-one wants to be cancelled, so they obviously scrambled and released a statement under pressure without thinking it through.

I think if there's anything PHM were in ignorance of, it's the fact that not believing in gender ideology is a protected characteristic under the Equality Act. So it's great this happened because now they (and others) know.

Honestly, the more organisations that fuck up publicly like this, the more the message that it's perfectly legal to say you don't believe in gender ideology reaches the ordinary people who are being bullied daily by gender ideologues (and by people who wrongly believe it's illegal to say that sex matters).

I've got a business idea...

Social media consultancy for organisations who fall foul of the TQ. I'll make a mint!

I'll give the first lesson away free: never apologise, never explain.

Women's history is woefully underrepresented and often misinterpreted.
Much of it centres around the uniquely female experiences of pregnancy, childbirth, motherhood, discrimination in all aspects of society from schools, workplaces and institutions. Women's health and their historical roles in nursing and education are essentially female.

Men who identify as trans are not appropriate guardians or educators of Women's History. Their personal issues with female people should not be allowed to deprive us all of the understanding of the history of half the human population.

ArcticSkewer · 30/06/2023 12:45

Come on guys. Everyone is entitled to let whoever they like book their facilities and exclude those they don't like. .... oh wait, no, that's why you don't see 'No Irish no Blacks' signs any more .... Turns out there's a downside.

I thought there was an exemption for stroppy women though. Surely there should be. They are never in the right side of history.

You're right. That's why I identify with the standard male gender trope, and stay out of the kitchen, lol.

Typo alert...you're all preserves crazy!

I was so angry when I saw that statement as I genuinely love that museum. Apart from the cowardice/spinelessness it's incredible to me that they didn't see there would be a massive backlash from women when they published that statement. And of course it's discriminatory .. I cant believe how behind the curve organisations are, they haven't got a clue.
I think some of the women's rights groups in Manchester should start having meet ups in their cafe (It's very nice), how fitting it would be to have difficult women in their nasty political t-shirts in the museum that holds the Suffragette collection.
What a pickle they've got themselves into, all because they couldn't say 'no'.

LonginesPrime · 30/06/2023 14:49

And of course it's discriminatory .. I cant believe how behind the curve organisations are, they haven't got a clue.

It's not surprising though - the impact of the Forstater case was understandably downplayed by TRAs who didn't like what it meant for "no debate", and they have very loudly and aggressively labelled anyone questioning gender ideology (including people pointing out what the Forstater case actually said) as evil bigots. So there is a lot of shame and risk attached to listening alternative viewpoints on transgender issues.

What is interesting is that if TRAs hadn't shamed all these organisations into ignoring anyone talking about the actual law on gender critical beliefs, PHM might have put two and two together and though "oh, it's that Maya Forstater coming here", and they might have twigged how closely their actions parallel Maya's legal case before talking out their arse.

Shakenbutbarelystirred · 30/06/2023 15:34

Now they have removed even the part about the statement being removed due to legal advice. Nothing to see here!

libertine80 · 30/06/2023 15:42

An aside but PHM was the first time I saw keep single sex space stickers in any toilet about 2017. Then in 2019 I went to a democracy exhibition there and there were lots of adult human female style signs that visitors had made. No censorship of these.

Hepwo · 30/06/2023 15:48

Well they're making history now, they will find out all about the "sides" of history now they are in the middle of it!

That apology wording is so generic now, it's as if they just Google "standard grovelling apologies trans and NB" and pick the most prostrating one possible.
Or maybe all the hundreds of trans organisations charge them to do it for them.

Grovel more, I say, they will hate you anyway. It's like a weird form of dom and sub fetishism now.

JeandeServiette · 30/06/2023 15:50

FGS. I was I'll when DH & DC went the first time. I googled them again yesterday to see if I could fit in a visit this summer en route somewhere else.

Am I going to have to boycott them too?

IwantToRetire · 30/06/2023 16:31

Just thinking of this in a slightly different way.

Nobody at the museum had any qualms about Sex Matters. They instinctively thought of course a group working on women's issues is fine.

But once Sex Matters tweeted about the meeting having been there, no doubt the trans virtual police lept on it.

Museum paniced and responsed on auto (ie we mustn't upset the trans community) and then realised their knee jerk reaction actually showed that the original booking was fine, and that they had let themselves be bullied by a tiny number of tweeters into failing to behave with fairness and equality.

If you are a museum you most be aware that history is made up of many threads of how people behaved and reacted differently in any one period of time. Why would their automatic response be that trans narrative is right.

Cant they think for themselves.

And as for staff being alienated, it clearly wasn't true as the booking would have been challenged.

If it wasn't all so damaging and anti woman you could just sit back and watch it as pantomime. Its not as though the script every changes.

You don't need a twitter account to read it, I don't have one. Some of the functionality, I suspect, is lost. If you get a pop up asking you to log in, you can just click the x to close it.

It takes me to the log in page, on the (Android) phone and the computer.
