Here are 6 reasons why we need a truly queer environmental movement

LGBTQIA+ people are among the most impacted by the climate crisis

Queerness offers a much-needed fresh perspective.

Being a queer environmental movement means standing alongside feminism, and any efforts to dismantle the patriarchy and redefine these roles.

“Queer ecology” is about seeing with new eyes, challenging the biases we bring to nature and redefining what we see as “natural”.

Governments, corporate and economic globalisation, science and technology – are all shaped by the cultural norms of the white, wealthy, western, non-disabled, male, cisgender and heterosexual.

Many queer people have forged strong connections with our own communities and networks. We have the experience of mobilising people as we fight for justice, standing in solidarity with others.

Just in case you thought queer politics cant have permeated every part of society, this shows that queerness is seen as making you superior, whilst at the same time saying you are the most marginalised.

NB - the quotes above are my extracts, not the full in depth analysis of the article!!

Six reasons why I'm calling for a queer climate movement | Friends of the Earth

Lewis Carr (he/they), a Campaigner at Friends of the Earth, reminds us that creating a fairer and greener world for everyone needs to include everyone, including the LGBTQIA+ community, and that doing so could help unlock the change we all so desperate...

Nah mate that’s bullshit.

Im going to guess that women and children are up the creak without a paddle (especially black women and women of colour).

But you keep convincing yourself how hard you have it.

The ironic thing is because of your very privilege you have no idea of the real impact of climate change.

I'm not reading the article, but I am trying to get my head round why this could be so. And I can't.

Same.

Are they saying that if you live on / near a river flood plain, then when it bursts its banks, the river will carefully bypass your house if you are straight but target your property if you are same sex oriented or identify as the opposite sex? I can’t really see how it would work like that.

Or are they saying that higher proportions of the population are gay in low lying countries like Bangladesh than in mountainous countries like Nepal?

LoobiJee · 29/06/2023 20:55

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 29/06/2023 19:22

It's ridiculous, obviously, but it's only an opinion piece from some low level dweeb. FoE aren't pushing it as policy.

It’s on the FotE website.

If they can’t be bothered fact checking their website, what else can’t they be bothered fact checking?

A quick scroll through shows almost no interaction with anyone.

Tbf I do not know how Twitter works, but there seems to be few comments on his tweets, even fewer likes.

It's really not that hard to get your head around.

In most countries in the world, LGBTQ people face degrees of social stigma and discrimination that leaves them more at risk of insecure housing, unstable housing, and homelessness. In the circumstances of a climate change event, they are therefore more at risk due to their precarious living situations.

LightlySearedontheRealityGrill · 29/06/2023 21:02

Is anyone really surprised the lunatics are taking over the asylum.

Caradonna · 29/06/2023 21:02

Y aaaaaaaa wwww nnnnnnnnn!

IwantToRetire · 29/06/2023 21:05

Having now looked at the twitter account, it seems even stranger.

This article was first published back in February 2022.

So does this mean that for the past year and a bit FoE have done a rigorour fact check on this article and decided it was fit for publication in June 2023.

Or that FoE have nothing or any value to say so thought they would pad their web site out with this nonsense?!

LGBTQIA+ people are among the most impacted by the climate crisis

I work in an area of climate change. It is true to say communities who are marginalised, poor, women and the young will be more impacted by climate change.

LGBTQIA+ communities are more marginalised, poorer and younger than 'average'. However, I'm not sure they are some of the most impacted.

I'm struggling to find exact figures or reports that are not somewhat sensationalised LGBTQIA+ articles making claims.

Without getting into a race/argument to say who is most impacted, I find the article rather at odds with inclusion of others. Almost a primacy of someone because they are LGBTQIA+, rather than because they are most impacted or considerably impacted. The defining factors here should be the amount of impact climate change will have on a community or individual, and an inclusive approach of a range of views, voices and needs.

OMG did you actually take valuable time from your day to read that pile of cack ? 🤣

Who knew that sub-saharan africa and small island nations had a disproportionately large number of queer folk.

I’m even more angry now, having looked at the 6 reasons.

  1. ‘queer’ people are the mostest marginalised and vulnerable group that have ever existed.
  2. ’queer’ people are super special and can think of things those boring normies couldn’t possibly imagine
  3. somehow climate change is caused by gender
  4. Queer people are special because they are keen on reimagining reality to suit themselves
  5. Some utterly myopic bullshit about social justice that somehow fails to recognise that white middle class Americans positioning themselves as more vulnerable than subsistence farmers whose lives have been wiped out by flooding in South Sudan (for example) is the opposite of actual social justice
  6. queer people are the only people who know how to protest. Any other movement can only be successful if it’s holding the furry costume tails of the alphabet soup of identity

Fucking excellent 👏😂

The LGBTQ folk that exist in these countries will be disproportionately at risk of adverse impact of climate change events due to their precarious living situations.

Can I ask for where to find evidence that trans, queer, furry and n/b sub-Saharan citizens are living in more precarious situations than for example children, the elderly or the disabled?

If you shove 'rainbows' in people's faces for too long and too often, people eventually find them triggering and start to avoid lol.

It's not a top trumps game, and nobody is in any doubt that there are other social groups that will be at particular risk too.

The assertion in the article is "LGBTQIA+ people are among the most impacted by the climate crisis"

This is perfectly accurate. I am sure LGBTQ older and disabled gay people are disproportionately at risk too.

You're not wrong I went to B&Q a few days ago to get some paint and the stand with all the colour cards damned near gave me a panic attack .

Gay meaning homosexual? The group actually at risk in many countries such as being thrown off roof tops? I thought they'd been cast out of the acronym for being sexual racists?

Ah sorry, it appears you've naively fallen prey to the 'divide and conquer' tactics of the far right who are (futilely) trying to alienate the LGBTQ community from each other.

There do seem to be some people, not in the community, that have fallen for these tactics, but be reassured: this is not what is happening amongst the LGBTQ community itself, where there remains very high levels of support from LGB to the T, and vice versa.

inkjet · 29/06/2023 22:18

If there is climate collapse there will be no blue hair dye and no-one will know who’s queer. We owe it to humanity to not let this happen.

dimorphism · 29/06/2023 22:25

If you're a proponent of self ID then just identify out of the impacts of climate change. It makes as much sense as identifying out of biological sex. Either material reality matters or it doesn't.

That's interesting, seeing as how I've heard on radio Nancy Kelley and Veronica Ivy explain that homosexual women are sexual racists for wanting to be homosexual? I thought Kelley was at the time head of Stonewall - surely they're not far right?!

Your posts always make me chuckle.

"The community itself"!

If no-one is alienated from the community vis a vis your "futile" comment, then those in the community are all in the community? And yet people in the community have actually told you on here they are alienated?

Is it a community itself, a single community or are there many communities, some you pretend don't exist?

Other communities are available! I've seen them!
😀

You missed off the Q in the last bit by the way.

Hmm, maybe you should go and present your case to the hijra community in Bangladesh
