Here are 6 reasons why we need a truly queer environmental movement

LGBTQIA+ people are among the most impacted by the climate crisis

Queerness offers a much-needed fresh perspective.

Being a queer environmental movement means standing alongside feminism, and any efforts to dismantle the patriarchy and redefine these roles.

“Queer ecology” is about seeing with new eyes, challenging the biases we bring to nature and redefining what we see as “natural”.

Governments, corporate and economic globalisation, science and technology – are all shaped by the cultural norms of the white, wealthy, western, non-disabled, male, cisgender and heterosexual.

Many queer people have forged strong connections with our own communities and networks. We have the experience of mobilising people as we fight for justice, standing in solidarity with others.

Just in case you thought queer politics cant have permeated every part of society, this shows that queerness is seen as making you superior, whilst at the same time saying you are the most marginalised.

NB - the quotes above are my extracts, not the full in depth analysis of the article!!

Six reasons why I'm calling for a queer climate movement | Friends of the Earth

Lewis Carr (he/they), a Campaigner at Friends of the Earth, reminds us that creating a fairer and greener world for everyone needs to include everyone, including the LGBTQIA+ community, and that doing so could help unlock the change we all so desperate...

How on EARTH does being a cosplayer make you "most impacted" by environmental issues??!!

Especially hot inside a furry costume.

IncomingTraffic · 29/06/2023 19:16

They are seriously claiming that queer people are among the most impacted by climate change.

seriously!?!

Not children and disabled people living unbelievably precarious conditions in the poorest parts of the world. Nope. People with blue hair and bucket loads of identity in the USA have it the worstest of all.

Oldnproud · 29/06/2023 19:17

I can't be bothered to read it, but I can think of no logical reason whatsoever as to why bring queer would mean that a person is more impacted by the environmental crisis. As a PP said, what a load of shite!

Shitshowatthefuckfactory · 29/06/2023 19:17

😂👏👏

Take a bow, you win the thread.

Off to my banking app to cancel the 28 year old direct debit I’ve been sending to FoE.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 29/06/2023 19:22

It's ridiculous, obviously, but it's only an opinion piece from some low level dweeb. FoE aren't pushing it as policy.

LGBTQIA+ people are among the most impacted by the climate crisis

I work in an area of climate change. It is true to say communities who are marginalised, poor, women and the young will be more impacted by climate change.

LGBTQIA+ communities are more marginalised, poorer and younger than 'average'. However, I'm not sure they are some of the most impacted.

I'm struggling to find exact figures or reports that are not somewhat sensationalised LGBTQIA+ articles making claims.

Without getting into a race/argument to say who is most impacted, I find the article rather at odds with inclusion of others. Almost a primacy of someone because they are LGBTQIA+, rather than because they are most impacted or considerably impacted. The defining factors here should be the amount of impact climate change will have on a community or individual, and an inclusive approach of a range of views, voices and needs.

IwantToRetire · 29/06/2023 19:28

Yes I did read it in full, and quite honestly couldn't follow most of the logic.

But on reading it, and as many other such distortions of real issues, I cant help but think a lot of it is about competing with women, who are the most likely to be impacted by natural disasters.

Not only because like everyone else they lose their homes, their livelihoods, but are usually the ones who take on the additional distress of having to protect children, and as always, are vulnerable to sexual abuse and exploitation by men. (eg Haiti)

Its as though although acknowledging the danger of patriarchal behaviour on women, they are saying but we aren't one of them. We're queer, so we're okay.

So yes, this is all about erasing women, their history and the cross society global wide fact that women are subjected to male exploitation.

So, no change there then.

IncomingTraffic · 29/06/2023 19:31

I’m even more angry now, having looked at the 6 reasons.

  1. ‘queer’ people are the mostest marginalised and vulnerable group that have ever existed.
  2. ’queer’ people are super special and can think of things those boring normies couldn’t possibly imagine
  3. somehow climate change is caused by gender
  4. Queer people are special because they are keen on reimagining reality to suit themselves
  5. Some utterly myopic bullshit about social justice that somehow fails to recognise that white middle class Americans positioning themselves as more vulnerable than subsistence farmers whose lives have been wiped out by flooding in South Sudan (for example) is the opposite of actual social justice
  6. queer people are the only people who know how to protest. Any other movement can only be successful if it’s holding the furry costume tails of the alphabet soup of identity

You’d think someone might have reviewed it and then told the writer to get a grip and stop imagining himself and his rainbow coloured band as the main characters

instead they published it on their website.

JaninaDuszejko · 29/06/2023 19:37

Who's betting Lewis is white, wealthy, western, non-disabled, male, and heterosexual.

IncomingTraffic · 29/06/2023 19:38

But with blue hair

IwantToRetire · 29/06/2023 19:39

instead they published it on their website.

And this is the other part of it. Do these organisations not think of the impact of publishing something like this on their website.

Do they want to alienate people?

Or is it as always that the male view of the world just does not or cannot see that women's experience and perception of the world is not the same as theirs.

Counter-suggestion: the environmental movement is already being badly damaged from too much of an association with these types of weirdos.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 29/06/2023 20:18

Quick squizz at the insta shows they is not straight, but def rich, white, western and male - certainly not marginalised by climate change. Unless holidaying in New Zealand and hanging out with a bunch of mates at Glasto is what marginalised means nowadays. I wonder if New Zealand was reached by boat.

FatFilledTrottyPuss · 29/06/2023 20:24

Abject nonsense like this is doing way more harm than good to the environmental movement. How can any normal person take green parties and charities like FoE seriously when they deny science and reality in this way?
He/they’s kind of myopic bellendery is driving people away from green causes in droves.

Plus all that weird hair dye and excess hormones washing into out waterways cant be good for the environment can it? 🙄

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/06/2023 20:34

This shite takes away from the fact that the climate crisis DOES affect certain groups more than others. Notably poor people in the Global South. Other groups in the West are older people, disabled people, people with MH and PH issues, homeless people, poorer people.

People who look like the writer are 100% NOT the people affected most.

IwantToRetire · 29/06/2023 20:40

Without dismissing actual body dismorphia, quite honestly the current public representation of trans issues seems to come down to nothing more that white middle class men who rather than deal with their own priviledge have invented a discrimination that they can wallow in and demand special privileged.

And are propt up by other white middle class men.

In fact it is even their very privilege that allows them to do it.

I agree. It's like their embedded entitlement makes them think that their wants and needs trump everyone else's. And yet they label themselves victims.

What's weirder is how much this is being pandered to. It's like a magnet for narcissists, but so many people don't see that.
