Honor Oak pub/Drag storytime: another counter protest

Calling fellow SE Londoners. Was given a flyer for a counter protest happening tomorrow (24 June). Apparently Turning Point UK are going to protest at the monthly drag storytime at the Honor Oak pub so local groups are organising a counter protest.

Hyperbolic language:

"far-right bigots" - yes, Turning Point UK are right-wing but far-right? As for bigots, the authoritarian left should examine its own behaviour.

Coming to "intimidate and spread pernicious lies" - how are they intimidating if there are so few of them? And what lies?

Tempted to go along to support the right of people to voice their opposition to drag story time. Fed up with the Left slurring anyone who doesn't agree with them as being right wing. No, some people just have different opinions to you.

And I saw some flyposters but by a different group of supporters under the heading "Lewisham Loves Trans People".

20 police vehicles, road closed (disrupting buses - thanks for that). About 30 from Turning Point UK, well over 100 counter protesters. Doubt there's much story reading going on inside - extremely loud music now replaced with shouting "off our streets". TP responding with a siren.

Police now moving barriers across the road to allow the counter protesters to leave the pavement and gather in the road.

Was the storytime at the pub? It seems like an odd venue to host an event for children but I guess the owners are comfortable with the rather peculiar publicity. If every event turns into a fight, parents should steer well clear (but I suspect this isn't really about the kids anyway).

Abhannmor · 24/06/2023 13:17

Not too familiar with Lewisham but I'd imagine South London as a whole is perfectly indifferent to trans people.

thirdfiddle · 24/06/2023 13:37

What on earth's going on with the TRA claiming to have been punched at this event except at 6.30 in the morning? Surely neither TPUK nor counter protestors would have been there at that time? Did he turn up early and walk into a signpost?

eleanorwish · 24/06/2023 13:59

From Twitter, he was accidentally hit by police when someone from his side was being arrested

Both 'sides' look as bad as each other from twitter footage.

One of the Turning Point protestors was supposedly stabbed and one of the Antifa protestors was injured but its unclear whether it was by a police officer or by one of the Turning Point gang.

Ada, the one in the tweet above, has been mentioned on this site previously.

Why would any parent want to take a young child to an event with all this going on outside?

Rightsraptor · 24/06/2023 14:29

The DT describes Ada (not directly but that's where joining the dots led me) as a 'trans man'. Judging from Ada's photo, I expect Ada would not call adaself that.

DerekFaker · 24/06/2023 15:26

It seems to be that the Honor Oak protests have been taken over by thugs on both sides who just want a good scrap. I think sensible people should give them a swerve.

DerekFaker · 24/06/2023 15:34

Anyway, here are some charming posts from Ada.

Trans activists are now stabbing counter protesters?

Pudmyboy · 24/06/2023 20:51

Disappointing the Telegraph has reported this as 'Trans activists 'attacked' at children's drag queen story time event' (with the pic that Twitter is roundly calling fake/staged and pointing out the 6:32am timeframe).
It's on the 'latest news' section so no capacity for comments, I really hope that somehow the timeframe is flagged up or it's put somewhere that allows comments so this can be pointed out.

Moonandstarzz · 24/06/2023 23:43

Why would any sound minded parent bring their little children to any of there events knowing that the risk of violence is very high?

Punching Terfs? I think Ada & the hate speech Ada is spewing needs to be reported to twitter & the police...

Moonandstarzz · 25/06/2023 15:34

My skin is actually crawling to think that parents brought their little children to that pub to hear a drag queen read a book.. Does anyone know how many children attended? It must have been a petrifying experience for them.

Someone was stabbed?

yetanotherusernameAgain · 26/06/2023 09:52

@SunnyEgg Someone had a cut on the back of their hand. One of the Turning Point UK protesters I think. There's a photo in a tweet, according to which the person received the cut as they were raising their hand to protect their face from an assault.

How is a protestor getting stabbed the equivalent of a TRA protestor getting accidentally injured by the police?! Fake equivalency!!!

DysonSpheres · 26/06/2023 10:12

I'm struggling to understand why anyone would take the time to defend DQST. Why?

But I live down the road from there and no one I know cares remotely about this or would turn up to protest for it.

But once you say anything is far right, people turn up to protest that. They probably could care less about DQST.
