Women who are lying or men who are lying? Menopause Research study sign up

Just spotted this tweet from Dr Joyce Harper.

I don't know what her view is on whether you can change sex or not so wonder, if she is TWAW, is this some sort of weird pay back and women are using male names on emails and refusing to turn their cameras on for zoom calls, or, is it men trying to get onto a menopause study, using their original emails and refusing to turn the camera on because they don't 'pass'.

For obvious reason it matters that the study cohort is female and I imagine it it feels more likely to be the latter scenario, but why not create a new email address?

Confusing.

She does go on to say they are women's voices on the calls. But then voice modulators are cheap.

PriOn1 · 20/06/2023 09:58

How unsurprising. Women’s health being disrupted by men. There are women explaining in the thread though. Sunlight, as always.

knittingaddict · 20/06/2023 10:03

I do wish she had been able to say clearly and unambiguously what the actual issue is. I think I know what she's trying to say, but some may not. It frustrates me that facts and truth are being sacrificed so much to a false ideology.

FlirtsWithRhinos · 20/06/2023 16:34

FWIW I didn't read it as a trans issue, I think she's getting women signing up under false demographics to get the voucher. So for example she wants equal numbers from groups A, B and C, but what's happening is lots of people in group A who don't get a place cos there are enough are signing up as group C to get the voucher.

RoseslnTheHospital · 20/06/2023 16:44

I have no idea what she's trying to say! I think she's saying it's an issue that male people who claim a female identity are trying to sign up and obviously are not eligible. But, then again, it's not clear. Is she trying to avoid getting censured by not mentioning the t word?

knittingaddict · 20/06/2023 16:48

I've honestly no idea what she's trying to say. The fact that she mentions male named emails suggests that she means trans, but could also mean women hiding their identity. No idea really.

FlirtsWithRhinos · 20/06/2023 16:50

I doubt it's trans women signing up as they generally wouldn't have male email addresses. I think it's more likely to be a specific ethnic group or nationality and that's why she doesn't want to be specific because it'll likely be taken as "Group A people do this!" rather than "a group of Group A people are doing this"

GulesMeansRed · 20/06/2023 16:59

I am a menopausal woman who is currently on HRT. I have been to in-person menopause support groups and am in online Facebook groups and similar. These groups are for WOMEN to discuss what they are going through and share experiences, get support from other WOMEN.

Men do not go through the menopause so have no place in a survey or focus group about menopause. Thinking there was a man on a Zoom call would definitely make me think twice about what I was sharing.

Yes, that makes perfect sense. So skirting around a different, but still sensitive issue?

The tweet has been deleted so I can only go by my suspicions here but I think this could well be the case. I saw her request a few months ago for women from black and minority ethnic groups to complete her menopause survey. She explained that she already had many responses from white women and was looking to make sure women of all ethnicities were included in the data.

Filling in surveys has become a recognised way of earning extra cash - just look at some of the threads on Money Matters. The problem is that in the 'old days' when surveys were distributed by hand or people were interviewed face to face, a researcher knew who had participated. There are huge advantages to doing things online but extra care is needed if you are funded to look at a specific group.

nettie434 · 21/06/2023 09:06

Sorry - just to make it clear, I am suggesting that people who are not black menopausal women were trying to complete her survey.

Signalbox · 21/06/2023 09:09

They are paying £25 for those taking part. I imagine that might encourage both men and women to lie.

RoseslnTheHospital · 21/06/2023 09:14

I don't understand the mention of "male" email addresses if it's about ethnicity? Seems an odd thing to raise in that context.

Fraaahnces · 21/06/2023 09:15

Nothing belongs to women anymore. Not even the right to use our own identity.

Signalbox · 21/06/2023 09:16

Igmum · 21/06/2023 08:40

The tweet has been deleted. What was it about?

It was research into peri -menopause. Payment of £25 for those taking part. Some email addresses marked “male”. Seems fairly obvious to me that people who are not peri-menopausal will try their luck for £££.

nettie434 · 21/06/2023 09:19

I'm ultra conscious that I didn't see the deleted tweet but I think it's what Signalbox wrote - the voucher is encouraging people not eligible for the research to volunteer.

RufustheSpecuIatingreindeer · 21/06/2023 09:21

It may well be both, but I think signalbox has it, and obviously it may be people applying multiple times

what makes an email address male? Its been so long since i set one up but i don’t remember being asked my sex

kelsaycobbles · 21/06/2023 09:24

Sone people share email addresses

Sone women might not want to reveal their sex in their email address

Signalbox · 21/06/2023 09:29

I wasn’t quite sure what this meant. I assume that when you set up an email you are asked basic demographic info and that must be available to the receiver of the email. But I’ve never seen the sex of the person sending me emails stated. But perhaps if you’re clever you can find it.

People are daft enough to use there real names in email addresses so brian@hotmail would be what I consider a male email address

I was thinking some demographics might be more likely to have a wife sharing the husband's email (my post menopausal mum does). But that is definitely a reach. Could also just be blokes pretending to be women to get the voucher.

But either way I think genuine trans women ("genuine" meaning males who identify as women all the time not just for this survey, not as an assessment of the identity itself) won't have male email addresses.

FlirtsWithRhinos · 21/06/2023 09:35

Oh yeah, "male" email just means an email with a usually male name. No connection to the actual person other than they picked it. So trivial to pick a name that it's unlikely a genuine trans woman would use a male one.

Signalbox · 21/06/2023 09:39

I was thinking some demographics might be more likely to have a wife sharing the husband's email

Yes actually my step mum shares an email with my dad. I think you’re right this is common for those who weren’t exposed to the internet in their youth.

OhHolyJesus · 21/06/2023 10:58

I didn't realise the tweet had been deleted.

As PPs have pointed out the reason for the male name email addresses could be because men are doing it for the voucher, or it's women using their husband's email address.

The female voices could be put on by a man (though unconvincing?) or could be a woman, but then why not turn on the camera as well?

Whatever the reasons - not necessarily 'gender identity' related - it sounds like a lot of time wasting for what is a serious study into menopause. I was confused by it so wanted to see what others thought, as the tweet has been deleted I'm even more confused. The tweet had initially said that Dr Harper felt the need to speak up, but then I guess she changed her mind?

If it is men pretending - trans identity or not - it disrupts research into a female-only condition that women need help with, so if I were the researchers I would be especially pissed off.
