Just went past a small independent bookshop in Cardiff which had this delightful message written on the window.

No Terfs on our Turf
OP posts:
PaigeMatthews · 18/06/2023 22:58

I wouldnt have bought anything there.

zanahoria · 18/06/2023 23:01

If they want to piss off customers that is their shout

Toseland · 18/06/2023 23:03

Sticker it!

ArabeIIaScott · 18/06/2023 23:19

Surely given that 'gender critical' views are WORIADS, that counts as discrimination? Reminds me of the 'no irish' signs of yore.

agent765 · 18/06/2023 23:25

Nothing I can't get from Amazon. Cheaper, too, no doubt.

TheGreatATuin · 18/06/2023 23:26

I've pretty much reached the point where I think anyone unironically using the term terf is just dumb as fuck. Harsh but true.
Of course, pissing off a lot of potential customers during a cost of living crisis is also pretty stupid. I'm guessing a lot of Cardiff women will be rolling their eyes and buying their books elsewhere.

ArabeIIaScott · 18/06/2023 23:34

It's okay, it's 'non-profit' shop.

PorcelinaV · 18/06/2023 23:35

Ignore the literal meaning, and in the broader sense, TERF is going to be around 50% to 70% of the country depending on the exact issue.

Kind of arrogant to think you own the country to the point that you can exclude the majority.

Yes, but possibly they could argue it's a slogan expressing a political viewpoint rather than a "you're not allowed in the shop" sign.

misogynyisbigotry · 18/06/2023 23:49

Joke's on you, lads: that sign would probably make me more likely to go in, if I were passing by and had a chunk of time free. Not to buy anything, of course - I'm boycotting bigots - but perhaps I could find a new use for my keenly-honed book-arranging skills which have been languishing underutilised since Farage's and Hannan's works disappeared after Brexit.

This. Most of us are MERFs, not TERFs. I don't exclude anyone's gender identity from feminism, because it's impossible to define anyway. Any female should be included in feminism.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 19/06/2023 06:05

I would leave a factual review. After all it would be a pity if someone who believes in biological sex or is against castration of children made a special trip to go there and then couldn’t go in.

The holding of the belief is.....but the manifestation of that belief is yet, untested. Caution is required. Unless one wants to be a test case digging vegies!

Agree completely. I’m guessing that the staff are all about 19 years old and very thick.

What complete nonsense. Read the judgment in the second Forstater tribunal, post the EAT. There are various examples of manifestation of gender critical belief assessed by the panel.

ArabeIIaScott · 19/06/2023 09:30

Yes, Eresh, precisely.

However if the bookshop wants to volunteer as a further test case I'm sure that will be noted.

Fenlandia · 19/06/2023 13:31

Their Twitter header image doesn't actually show any books, or the shop interior either. Just a bunch of slogans, including the ironically revealing "feminists for trans rights". My own feminism is for women, actually!

Pixiedust1234 · 19/06/2023 13:48

Ah well. You didn't read their Insta properly.

Non-profit radical bookshop in Canton, Cardiff.
Radical, adjective 2)
advocating or based on thorough or complete political or social change; representing or supporting an extreme or progressive section of a political party.

TrainedByCats · 19/06/2023 14:45

I find it disappointing they describe themselves as feminist when they are so obviously anti-women

rookiemere · 19/06/2023 14:54

Bit silly when TERFs are probably the demographic who buys most books (I'm counting myself in there).

BunnyBettChetwynnd · 19/06/2023 14:55

ArabeIIaScott · 18/06/2023 23:34

It's okay, it's 'non-profit' shop.

Perfect marketing strategy then.

FrancescaContini · 19/06/2023 15:14

I had a brief look at their Instagram. They celebrated “Empathy Day”, whatever that may mean, but clearly their empathy doesn’t extend to women.
