It’s so sad, isn’t it. One TW destroying the pleasure of so many others. And it’s so obvious that male biology is going to be an advantage in this sport.

I am impressed with the bravery and self sacrifice shown by the women who have stood down from the team. And I wish we didn’t have to lose things that gave us pleasure because of these incursions. Women and girls will end up with nothing for themselves. We have to fight back, but like all battles it is painful and there are losses.

I hope they find a new way to engage in a sport they love.

cuckyplunt · 11/06/2023 07:36

Not sure why angling competitions are split by gender anyway. Surely doesn’t matter what sex you are if you’re just sitting with a fishing rod?

PermanentTemporary · 11/06/2023 07:37

'The radical notion that women are people' as women

Well, good for the team. Sounds like Becky will do ANYTHING at all to do the sport they love, ANYTHING, except compete in the correct category.

PermanentTemporary · 11/06/2023 07:38

@cuckyplunt did you read the link? This is shore angling - not a sport I was familiar with - involving 5-6 hours of fishing in the sea, wading in and out of the water.

Missing the point spectacularly.

This is very physically demanding at this level, it's not just sitting there with a fishing rod.

It's sad it's come to this but also good for them, it's the only way sports will see sense I think.

It explains fairly well in the article how physical strength and longer reach give you an advantage. The women who have quit have acknowledged that while it is beneficial for their team to have a TW on board, they've left because they feel it's unfair to their competitors. I have a huge amount of respect for that.

Clearly you have absolutely no idea as to the strength and skill required in this sport. Where skills are equivalent, strength will always give an advantage.

Or perhaps this post was sarcastic? I find it hard to believe anyone can be so dim.

Codlingmoths · 11/06/2023 07:41

So much respect and sympathy for those women, who’ve sacrificed their opportunity here.

PriOn1 · 11/06/2023 07:50

If any of those women are reading, thank you.

What a sad and courageous end to a woman’s sporting career that has lasted 22 years.

I hope that their bravery in taking a stand is effective in bringing change.

Hagosaurus · 11/06/2023 08:11

What PriOn1 and other pp’s said. Love and respect to those women that withdrew because they could see that they had a hugely unfair advantage - what a contrast to the TW involved. Again, no one is trying to stop transwomen competing, they have their own sex-category available.

Surely it’s obvious that in any sport where there are separate sex categories, there is a sex-based advantage? Competitors want to challenge themselves, so the best would seek competition against the opposite sex if that could be done fairly.

dimorphism · 11/06/2023 08:12

What I never understand about sports and prisons is this: if you're going to allow some males in, what's the point of sex segregation in the first place?

Anyone who thinks tw should be in women's sports surely just thinks all sports should be mixed sex? Same with prisons, it's the only logical conclusion. And the logical consequence of that will be no women in sports. You only have to look at tw to see the massive advantage they have, it's completely obviously unfair.

What would perfectly illustrate the madness is if 3 male competitors in this sport suddenly discover inner lady feels and take up the remaining spaces on this team. I'm sick of waiting for the decent male sportsmen to step up on this (with notable exceptions).

Not only is this unfair to women it's also exclusionary of all the other mediocre male competitors who surely should be given the same opportunity to compete unfairly and trample all over women.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 11/06/2023 08:13

So depressing to read this. No sport is safe is it?

Differences in casting distance, ability to play a fish....
Yes, there ARE differences.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 11/06/2023 08:33

Well that really is stunning and brave! It’s one thing, as a woman, to maybe give up your sport or make a stand because you’re having to compete against men but it’s really quite something to have the strength of character and common decency to do it when actually the advantage would have been yours but your sense of fairness and sportsmanship regarding your opponent is the driving factor behind your decision. Very sad for them that it comes to this, but what strong women they are.

Charley50 · 11/06/2023 08:37

Good for those women, and yet more proof that transgender ideology destroys what it touches.

Florissant · 11/06/2023 08:39

Those poor women. I shall not say what I think of the man.

JellySaurus · 11/06/2023 08:45

Good on those women! 💪

Jamie Cook, chief executive of the Angling Trust, said: 'As the national governing body for angling, the question we are required to address by Sport England is whether the sport of angling is gender impacted to an extent where fairness overrides inclusion or safety.
While the Angling Trust have their heads up their own arses (or somebody else's) the anglers are pointing out that 'fairness' applies to others as well.

Indeed.
Very much respect to them.

Feckedupbundle · 11/06/2023 08:46

Brave women, but do sad that they have had to give up well earned team places because of a man.
I find it very interesting that the one sport where women and men compete on an equal basis, the same team,or mixed competitions, there are no TW. Equestrian sports . I wonder why that is?

I can only think of rifle shooting as a potential sport where sex wouldn’t make a difference

The article states that bigger and stronger participants do have an advantage, although other skills are also important.

It does, though. Weight of the gun, breasts impeding movement, peripheral perception.

Not to mention of course all the associated things that impact on women and not men - which is to say men aren't mothers and find it easier to take time for sports and interests, have uninterrupted career, etc.

Agree. They really are missing out but the only way to fight back is to take away the "competition"
