Hopefully the other teams now withdraw in solidarity.

PermanentTemporary · 11/06/2023 09:03

It isn't even as simple as 'strength' meaning muscle strength, but the structural sex differences like hand size, shoulder width, reach, hip placement. They affect more sports than you'd think, probably including this one.

BreatheAndFocus · 11/06/2023 09:03

Well done those women! I’m getting so sick of this cheating and disrespect for women’s sports.

Not sure why angling competitions are split by gender anyway. Surely doesn’t matter what sex you are if you’re just sitting with a fishing rod?

This was my initial reaction too, but if you read the article, it explains:

She said male-born competitors had far more upper-body strength, adding: 'This is such an advantage, with the ability to cast longer distances than any woman. They have the capability of doing this while using more powerful equipment, such as stiffer and more powerful rods.

'Not to mention the extra strength she has wading in and out of the surf or walking through mud and rocks, and the stamina to keep this going for four or five hours.
'I have no grudge personally. This is an advantage to our team, but we find it totally unfair to other nations.

So yes, it seems that biological sex matters very much in angling, and this is very unfair indeed.

NotBadConsidering · 11/06/2023 09:11

It shouldn’t even matter if there is physical advantage or not. Women who want to do an activity with and against women only should not have to argue for the right to do so.

AlisonDonut · 11/06/2023 09:14

So women, defending their title, do not want to disadvantage other women and pull out.

These men do not give a shiny shit who they disadvantage if it means they win.

Tell me there are no differences between men and women again?

MrsOvertonsWindow · 11/06/2023 09:19

Thank you to those women. You've sacrificed your own angling careers for the greater good of women's sport Flowers

ArabeIIaScott · 11/06/2023 09:19

'Transgender competitors are ruining our sport,'

Said weightlifters, swimmers, track runners, cyclists, rugby players, golfers and boxers.

SmartHome · 11/06/2023 09:24

brave women, I salute them. This is the only way to stop narcissistic men ruining women's sports, refuse to compete. A generation of women will miss out but it will eventually stop these men invading for kicks.

ArabeIIaScott · 11/06/2023 09:26

This is a brave, and sad, move for those women to take. I wonder if its the only way women's sport can really respond?

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 11/06/2023 09:27

Praying for an undertow.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 11/06/2023 09:33

Good for those women, and yet more proof that transgender ideology destroys what it touches.

This.

ArabeIIaScott · 11/06/2023 09:37

One by one every sport will face the same. Every women's group. Everything that women set up for themselves and fought for.

Waitwhat23 · 11/06/2023 09:38

There are a ridiculous amount of comments on Twitter by men saying 'it's angling, how can there be an advantage?, them being asked if they've actually read the article they are commenting on and them then admitting that no, they haven't. A couple refusing to do so because they 'won't give the Mail clicks'. A few commenting that, even without reading it, they know it's all 'based on bigotry'.

It's always quite depressing to see such a lack of critical thinking and intellectual curiosity.

Barbadossunset · 11/06/2023 09:40

I can only think of rifle shooting as a potential sport where sex wouldn’t make a difference.

Men & women compete in equal terms in equestrian sports - dressage, eventing, showing, show jumping etc.
In racing there are an increasing number of successful women jockeys.
Not sure about polo.

Waitwhat23 · 11/06/2023 09:41

And agree with pp's about a huge deal of respect to these women for taking a stand even when it would have been an advantage to their team because they saw how unfair it was to other teams.

Maddy70 · 11/06/2023 09:42

Why are angling competitions spit into genders ?

ArabeIIaScott · 11/06/2023 09:43

RTF article Maddy.

And how many of them have ever been fishing themselves?

I haven't done it in years, following a nasty accident, but I never could cast as far as the men.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 11/06/2023 09:43

They’re not maddy, they’re split by sex

hth

LonginesPrime · 11/06/2023 09:43

Yes it's great they've taken a stand, and I think it's so much more powerful that they are doing so from the inside of the potential winning team, rather than as the losers whose protestations are often reframed as sour grapes.

Further, it's actually really helpful that so many women are explaining how sex differences matter in their particular sports now, as even I used to believe the lie that there were "very few" sports where biological sex makes a difference, and I used to think it was only about contact sports like boxing and rugby.

But the sunlight on the practical details of sex-based performance discrepancies in each of these sports makes it so clear just how often sex does actually matter after all.

crumpet · 11/06/2023 09:46

ArabeIIaScott · 11/06/2023 08:57

It does, though. Weight of the gun, breasts impeding movement, peripheral perception.

Not to mention of course all the associated things that impact on women and not men - which is to say men aren't mothers and find it easier to take time for sports and interests, have uninterrupted career, etc.

That’s interesting- OK, another one off the list!

I think there’s actually even an eyesight difference between men and women which impacts shooting performance.

I posted an analysis of evidence of sex difference in shooting - its contradictory! Some studies show advantages for males, some don't.
