Anyone seen the tweet by Maya tonight about this little animation by Oxfam? Here’s the link:

nice to see that Maya seems to be the Times's go to person for quotes on this story

There was no intention by Oxfam or the film-makers for this slide to have portrayed any particular person or people.

I'm not sure where this quote comes from, but the paired pictures of the cartoon in the OP and the photo of JK Rowling wearing a similar dress, with a badge or brooch where the TERF badge is, are difficult to reconcile with this statement (sorry, I don't have a link to the side-by-side pictures).

Indeed. That denial is a load of old cobblers, imo.

Looking at the side-by-side cartoon and photo you can definitely see that the cartoon hair colour and hair style, the badge position and cut of dress are all very particular, and just like the photo. It is either not a coincidence, or else the cartoon artist was subliminally influenced by the photo of JKR.

Is there public concern over the image of the ‘trans kid’ with mastectomy scars? I somehow don’t recall that being mentioned much.

"Intention" is the key word here, I think. They are not denying that it looks like JKR, but it would be hard to prove that this was done consciously by the artist. Unconscious association or imitation often happens in the arts. If someone asked me to draw a "self-regarding twat", I might draw a man with straw-like blond hair, without being conscious that I associated the phrase with the outgoing MP for Uxbridge & South Ruislip...

To be clear: I 💯think it was intentional by Oxfam; I just think that it would be very difficult to prove.

Further coverage in the Daily Telegrpah today as four more women have come forward:

"A former Oxfam worker claims she was told she could not know what oppression is because she was straight.

The employee is one of three more staff members to have come forward to spotlight the persecution that gender-critical women were subjected to by the charity, making a total of four women whose concerns have been reported by the Telegraph.

The three whistleblowers were emboldened to speak out after Oxfam was accused of attacking JK Rowling over her views on transgender issues in a controversial Pride cartoon."

It goes on:

"Sally said she considered making a formal complaint because she “felt bullied and very uncomfortable” going into work on a daily basis and had begun to look for other jobs.

But when she “tested the water” with a senior colleague in an informal conversation, she said they were “so hostile, coming close to calling me a bigot”, and told her to “think very carefully about your privilege” before “you paint yourself as the victim”."

and

"Gita also recalled one of her male colleagues lecturing her on being “whorephobic” after she made disapproving remarks about the Oxfam sexual exploitation scandal in Haiti."

Whorephobic for God's sake??!

Oxfam is a complete disgrace.

You can read more about the 4 women here

Oxfam has become a distortion of it's original mission bit like Stonewall.

Since it gets about 25% of its income from national government and the EU I can only assume their criminality stupidity and bigotry is supported by them

I probably don't have much in common politically with people like JK Rowling, Germaine Greer and Julie Bindel but I am in lockstep with them on this and admire their courage in speaking out for women

AlisonDonut · 10/06/2023 12:43

The Charities Commission could easily have pulled the emails and process from start to finish regarding the commissioning of that video. That is what I would have done.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 10/06/2023 12:45

India is outside the reach of the UK charities commission.

The problem is that Oxfam is promoting a nonsense that our "establishment" believes in.

If they'd done something against Net Zero or COVID vaccines the authorities would be down on them like a ton of bricks

ChristinaXYZ · 10/06/2023 14:31

I think you are right @ManAboutTown . Every attempt to return things to the previously accepted (for millenia) man / woman binary is being fought tooth and nail not just in major orgnaisations like Oxfam, the NSPCC, Childline, the Arts Council, the NHS, the BBC or schools but in those organisations tasked with monitoring them like the Civil Service, the Charity Commission, Ofstead, Ofcom, the EHRC, even within the current Cabinet where although most are not woke there are still woke-lite people like Gillian Keegan.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 10/06/2023 14:50

Almost no one truly believes that men can become women. It suits the Establishment to play along, to earn woke points, and because the main collateral damage is to women, who don't matter.

I have always thought, and there seems to be some signs of it now happening, that the pushback will only come when the impact on gay men is recognised.

I've mentioned the bilateral mastectomy image on twitter, but not had any responses. Interesting that was left in the video.

crunchermuncher · 10/06/2023 15:29

Having a family member who had an unwanted mastectomy due to cancer, ave seeing the distress , physical pain and anguish this caused her, it makes me sick to my stomach to see mastectomy scars being glorified/ normalised like this to vulnerable kids. It's also fucking offensive to cancer survivors.

Breasts are part of your body; removing them is amputation. You can't get working ones put back in again. It's not like changing your hat!

ChristinaXYZ · 10/06/2023 15:50

@ElAyuntamiento I've seen quite a few people mention the mastectomy image and the fact the edited version still shows this. As you say, it is really irresposible to be glorifying this.

IwantToRetire · 10/06/2023 16:56

Apparenlty you cant make a complaint to the Charity Commission until you have made a complaint to the Charity itself and felt it wasn't dealt with.

According to the online form these are the areas of concern you can raise:

Raising concerns about a charity - What do you want to report?

  • Fundraising methods
  • The standard of service provided by a charity
  • The charity owes me money
  • Employment disputes
  • Disputes within a charity involving members and/or trustees
  • Significant financial loss to the charity
  • Serious harm to beneficiaries and, in particular, vulnerable beneficiaries
  • Threats to national security, particularly terrorism
  • Criminality within or involving a charity
  • Sham charities set up for illegal or improper purpose
  • Charities deliberately being used for significant private advantage
  • Where a charity's independence is seriously called into question
  • Serious non-compliance in a charity that damages or has the potential to damage its reputation and/or the reputation of charities generally
  • Serious non-compliance in a charity which, left unchecked, could damage public trust and confidence in the Charity Commission as an effective regulator

I thought there were rules about not having political campaigns?

Clymene · 10/06/2023 17:03

It may not have been on this thread and I can't remember who posted it (how helpful!) but someone posted an article the other day about how what are effectively lobby groups are being awarded charitable status and how absolutely toothless the charity commission is.

Will have a look. I've always thought that stonewall is now effectively a political lobbying organisation which is not permitted by it seems that if you're advocating for a 'minority' group, then using cash to lobby for political change is now fine.

Clymene · 10/06/2023 17:04

Found the article. Still can't remember who posted it (poss resister Rex?). Anyway, it's an eye opener

Hoardasurass · 10/06/2023 17:12

Has anyone had a response from oxfam other than the automated email saying that they hope to respond in two days but are busy so may take longer?
I emailed my complaint on Monday and I've not heard back and am wondering if I need to follow up or not

ResisterRex · 10/06/2023 18:58

That was me, Clymene. It's quite the mine of information!

HeddaGarbled · 10/06/2023 19:08

@Hoardasurass

I’ve had a follow up email: we made a mistake; we are inclusive; thanks for your support for the last 20 years 🤷‍♀️

Fireyflies · 10/06/2023 23:49

I'd say your complaint fits into "fundraising efforts" @IwantToRetire . I assume the intention of the advert was to encourage people to give money to Oxfam so they can fight transphobia, however much it may have been misguided and counter productive.

Fireyflies · 10/06/2023 23:50

I've had no response at all yet apart from the automated one

TrainedByCats · 12/06/2023 23:56

The Oxfam international and GB twitter accounts have been very quiet since they posted the revised video do you suppose they are hoping this will just go away?

TheBiologyStupid · 13/06/2023 00:32

All the rogue interns have been told not to tweet and no-one else knows how to?
