Joanna Cherry banned

The Stand is owned / partly owned by Tommy Sheppard who is an SNP MP.

An event featuring a prominent MP who has been outspoken in the bitter debate about trans rights has been cancelled by the Edinburgh Fringe’s biggest comedy club.

Joanna Cherry was due to take part in an “In conversation with . . . ” discussion at The Stand’s New Town Theatre during the summer.

But she has been “no platformed” after staff at the venue, including management and box office personnel, said they would not be comfortable working at the show.

This really is going too far.

Imagine if this action was being taken the other way round? I wonder if she will sue for discrimination?

Rightsraptor · 01/05/2023 06:48

Oh dear, poor venue staff.

Imagine having to be in the vicinity of someone who can produce such rational, clear arguments with such economy of style as Joanna Cherry.

No wonder they're frightened to be anywhere near her.

EfingNora · 01/05/2023 06:54

When you have someone as eloquent and articulate as ms Cherry opposing your opinion I suppose the only solution is to stick your fingers in your ears and shout "TRALALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU" and they wonder why people don't take them seriously.

Littlesprouts · 01/05/2023 08:10

Saw this coming when Bethany Black kicked up a fuss. The venue has come out with exactly the same poor excuses as The Pleasance last year when they booted out Sadowitz. Depressing state of affairs for the Fringe again. I hope JC finds and alternative venue.

Mythicalcreatures · 01/05/2023 08:13

I spend a fair bit at the festival every year. Dp and I were talking this morning about considering venues before booking but the stand and the pleasance, don't know how that would work.
If the owners were bothered they could sack the lot of them, wouldn't be too difficult to get art /drama graduates

FrancescaContini · 01/05/2023 08:40

They’re uncomfortable working in close proximity to a rational, clear thinking female politician because they don’t like her views?

These poor little flowers. I don’t understand how they manage to leave their homes every day if they’re so afraid of other people’s views. Daily life must be totally crippling for them.

ArabeIIaScott · 01/05/2023 08:47

WTF?

What kind of absurd cut-price dystopian shithole are we actually living in right now?

Comedy, like the arts, is a barometer of the health of a democracy. This is why so many of the people talking out about the issues with gender are comedians, and the fact that the ideology has no sense of humour is part of the reason you can tell its being enacted by coercion and manipulation.

Would they no-platform Ricky Gervais? Or is it just women?

WickedSerious · 01/05/2023 08:57

Oh dear,the poor wee things.

How on earth do these people get through the day?

Babdoc · 01/05/2023 09:02

Damn, that’s annoying - I will have to boycott them now.
Last year they hosted Mary Bourke, a brilliant terf stand up comedienne, and I don’t recall any staff being traumatised or needing therapy after her hilarious gig!
The loons have apparently taken over the asylum this year.

SquidwardBound · 01/05/2023 09:14

Bloody hell… they work in a comedy club. And a female MP is what they decide their precious little ears can’t cope with hearing.

I mean, they would hear it, because the stand edinburgh is just one big room. But it’s a ridiculous point to claim offence in
a comedy club.

ArabeIIaScott · 01/05/2023 09:46

Oh, this is an interesting quote, from Jo Cherry, renowned expert lawyer:

“It should not be possible for venues or their staff to no-platform lesbians or feminists who believe that sex is an immutable biological fact just because of our sexuality or our beliefs,” she said.

“That sort of discrimination is unlawful and I’m sure most people would agree it’s not acceptable.”'

ArabeIIaScott · 01/05/2023 09:47

Of all the people to no-platform on the basis of their beliefs, I'm not sure a lawyer would be my first choice, to be honest.

NatashaDancing · 01/05/2023 09:55

I don't like Joanna Cherry and despite the much vaunted claims about her intelligence she doesn't have enough of it to leave the SNP. Her response to Rishi Sunak's completely technically correct and justified use of s.35 wasn't very bright either.

However, having said that it's a pity I don't like stand up comedy so I can't withdraw my custom from The Stand as I've never been. Its owner Tommy Sheppard is a virtue signalling prat.

Absolutely!

stealtheatingtunnocks · 01/05/2023 11:26

A comedy club is censoring free speech?

coukdnt make it up.

why did they book her? It’s not exactly a secret that she knows what a woman is.

fucking ridiculous. Come and do your talk in my house, JC! I’ll push the big settee out the way, we can all squeeze in

Tallisker · 01/05/2023 11:35

I sat next to her at a thing and thanked her for what she does for women <fangirling>

SageHoney · 01/05/2023 14:11

who has been outspoken in the bitter debate about trans rights who has been outspoken in the bitter non-debate about women's rights

What were they afraid an MP was going to do to them? Talk sense? Use big words? Correctly reference the law? Or most terrifying of all ... d-e-b-a-t-e ??

Ah well, one for the boycott list. Those clubs are essentially the property of the Scottish public, given the humongous COVID bail-outs. Your tax £££ at work for weaponised misogyny.

Signalbox · 01/05/2023 16:28

Are they trying to make it really easy for her to sue or something?

ArabeIIaScott · 01/05/2023 17:47

Crikey, they really are going for it, then? In writing. Wow.

TheBiologyStupid · 01/05/2023 18:12

Yup, idiots!

SquidwardBound · 01/05/2023 18:40

Our staff, including the management and box office staff, are self-appointed censors.

So if anyone is considering booking our venue in future, please be aware that we may be unable to fulfil that booking because our staff may decide at any time that they simply aren’t willing to let your event happen.

Other venues are available.

Rainbowshit · 01/05/2023 18:56

It's quite astonishing the number of Twitter experts lining up to argue against the Dean of the faculty of advocates and other legal experts. 🙈
