In response, Webb says he has never claimed to be transgender and this is how he sees his own sense of gender.

“You don’t get to question me,” he said directly to the audience. “You do not get to require proof from me. You were part of the movement to help establish these rules and set the bar. Okay? You don’t get to come later when someone else joins your club that you don’t want in.”

Not claiming to be trans is the cherry on top.

It'll be interesting to see how this how this plays out in the rest of the US as well as in Delaware County, Indiana. Hope he's strapped in for the ride and that his family's safe.

I don't know. I daresay he thinks he's being very clever and funny but I'd rather see politicians addressing the problems seriously.

I don't think he is thinks he's being funny or clever. The initial claim to be a woman of color [sic] might seem childish at first sight. But he knew exactly what the response from the TRAs would be, which allowed him to make the point he expressed brilliantly:

He held up a mirror to the TRAs. And no doubt they will come back with a lot of 'yes but..., no but...' However their quotes are out there for all to see, and it exposes them for the hypocrites they really are.

I had a look at Councilperson Webb's facebook, where there's a link to his first broadcast interview.

Two things stood out for me.

Firstly, the shock and distress he clearly feels because his gender identity has not been fully accepted by those of differing political view.

Secondly, he is very clear he has, in fact, changed his name. He has changed it from Ryan (a man's name) to Ryan (a woman's name).

I know mumsnet - rightly - is very hot on deleting posts which misgender someone. Can I remind everyone to ensure that they use the correct 'Ryan' so as not to misgender this brave individual as he explores his gender identity.

He can be as stunning and as brave as he likes but until someone links to that I shall just have to continue gushing about how amazing he is choosing to live as his authentic self.

Why? He is trolling but he is actually proving a point. If people can believe others can change their sex (they can't), why can't people say they've changed age, race etc?

Other than the change in pronouns, why is Ryan(girl) any different from Gregor Murray? Both are politicians claiming a trans identity. Why should one be accepted as trans and the other be mocked?

Well it's just as true as other people's claims. None are based in reality.

I am pleased to say that this still holds even when the transperson is being a dick. We don't get to doubt people's identities just because we don't like them or the party they stand for.
