Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

My local councilor just laughed in my face

Just that.

He was canvassing the area, I had previously had email correspondence with him where I asked him 'What is a woman' and he gave me a reply about all discrimination is wrong.

So I tried to engage him on the doorstep, he laughed and told me to 'have a conversation with someone else'.

So I looked up the code of conduct for councilors, apparently they have a duty to represent the view of all in their ward. I don't think he can do that.

Then I found out that the council code of conduct doesn't include 'sex' in it's equality blurb.

Was he Labour or Lib Dem?

sashh · 30/04/2023 11:44

Labour.

He won't have any coherent arguments to be able to discuss - only abuse and hostility . That's why he laughed - to hide his embarrassment and fury at you being such an uppity woman!

Labour.

Shows what most of them really think and how captured they are to 'gender identity ideology' anti-science. You should have told him that if he doesn't respect your sex, he should not expect to get your 'x'.
You did effectively do that and he was so arrogant as to not care lol.
I am ashamed I was ever a member of the ridiculous Labour Party.

sashh · 30/04/2023 11:54

Yep.

But hey, the complaint has gone in now.

Oh that's written on my spoiled ballot paper - in purple and green writing.

Is there nobody local and independent you can vote for?

KCandtheSunlightBand · 30/04/2023 11:58

There a good letter on the WPUK site to send to councils and any other organisation that doesn’t list the correct characteristics, reminding them that it is a legal requirement, such as my local GP surgery ( yes, doctors, midwives etc) who included loads of other really nice things to have but put Gender instead of Sex.

SquirrelSoShiny · 30/04/2023 12:00

I'm glad you complained. The arrogance is disgraceful. I think this whole movement has emboldened a certain kind of man of limited ability who is managing to thrive by riding the wave. Of course they will then follow the prevailing wind.

I never in my life thought that I would prefer a Tory win but Labour needs humbled now. They need to learn once and for all that they don't just represent the blue-haired 0.00005% who scream a lot on Twitter.

sashh · 30/04/2023 12:10

@GoodChat nope

3 Labour, 3 con 1 lib dem.

Sadly I think that the fucking useless LP may still get a good amount of votes in the next election although I hope not as they are at the moment. I swing between hoping that they will flop and then hoping that they will change direction and get a landslide. I am left wing at heart but this incarnation of the LP is embarrassing and rage inducing.

sashh · 30/04/2023 12:15

@Flowerly Yep. I'm the same.

Do not spoil your ballot paper please. Even if a safe seat, vote for someone else.

Glad you have put in your complaint.

sashh · 30/04/2023 12:18

Too late I have a postal vote - spoiled ballots have to be looked at.

Ffs its OPs ballot, she can do whatever she feels best gets her point across.
Just stop with the demanding what women do with their own ballot.

So I looked up the code of conduct for councilors, apparently they have a duty to represent the view of all in their ward. I don't think he can do that.

Regardless of the issue, it is impossible for a councillor to represent someone in the way that you are suggesting. They disagree with your position (presumably) and are not required to agree with it or promote it on your behalf. I have a Tory councillor here, and he thinks the government are doing a great job. I disagree. I can't make him represent my view. There are a few racists down the road - are you expecting him to represent their views as well? If what you are expecting were the case, then all politicians would have to "believe" and "promote" every single position on every subject. That is clearly ridiculous.

ArabeIIaScott · 30/04/2023 12:25

It's a surprising response to a constituent's expressing concern or asking questions.

But there you go, some people become politicians because they enjoy dick swinging.

You can represent views without agreeing with them. Representing is not about promoting or agreeing.

I'm an atheist who doesn't agree with faith schools, if I was a councilor and I was on an LPA I wouldn't try to stop a faith school building an extension.

I shall be spoiling mine too.

SomeRolyPolyLittleBatFacedGirl · 30/04/2023 12:44

My Lib Dem (sitting) candidate has just hand delivered a letter addressed to DH begging for his vote.

I did not get a letter.

@SomeRolyPolyLittleBatFacedGirl How has your DH reacted?

Why ever not? It's a perfectly legitimate way of protesting.

I know I was one of 237 spoilt ballots in my constituency at the last election because they are counted and the numbers published. It's the best way tell politicians none of them represent me. If I didn't go and spoil my ballot they might think I'm apathetic or can't be arsed.

2bazookas · 30/04/2023 13:48

So I tried to engage him on the doorstep, he laughed and told me to 'have a conversation with someone else'.

The answer to that is (tinkly laugh) " Thanks for your input, I'll be giving my vote to somebody else".

BobBobBobbing · 30/04/2023 13:51

I've had labour and green canvassing locally. The labour women was backing down the garden to get away from me when I raised the question of women's rights, clarifying the equality act and the treatment of a Rosie Duffield. The gentleman from the greens had a thoughtful discussion around how to protect the rights or women and trans people, along with recognition that biology matters in some situations. He also said that this was the position he took in internal green party debates as well. Guess who is getting my vote?

RudsyFarmer · 30/04/2023 13:52

I’d be fucking incensed. I can’t stand Labour. Honestly CAN’T STAND them. I’d rather take a shit on my ballot paper than vote for them.
