My local councilor just laughed in my face

Just that.

He was canvassing the area, I had previously had email correspondence with him where I asked him 'What is a woman' and he gave me a reply about all discrimination is wrong.

So I tried to engage him on the doorstep, he laughed and told me to 'have a conversation with someone else'.

So I looked up the code of conduct for councilors, apparently they have a duty to represent the view of all in their ward. I don't think he can do that.

Then I found out that the council code of conduct doesn't include 'sex' in it's equality blurb.

I know I was one of 237 spoilt ballots in my constituency at the last election because they are counted and the numbers published

Would they publish if I wrote “bunch of incompetent twats” on mine? That’s what im doing.

VeronicaBeccabunga · 30/04/2023 13:59

I know it can be difficult to out oneself with GC views but this might be worth posting on local social media.
The arrogance of some local councillors, especially those who have been in safe seats for years, is breath-taking.

Flowerly · 30/04/2023 12:40

I shall be spoiling mine too.

I spoiled mine when I voted last week.

We have the choice of Cons, Labour, Lib Dem, Green and Reform here. So, nobody to vote for.

Madamecastafiore · 30/04/2023 14:15

Our lesbian labour councillor wasn't even aware there was an issue! Apparently I was the first person to bring it up. I did quiz her side kick and he said the issue had been brought up and he was aware of it and would 'look into it!'

We're a safe Tory seat so I may spoil my paper too.

@SomeRolyPolyLittleBatFacedGirl How has your DH reacted?

There was a quip about the vote of the Man of the house being most important, not to worry my pretty little head about it sort of thing. And then he ran away and only returned with a large cup of tea.

weightymatters73 · 30/04/2023 14:25

sashh · 30/04/2023 11:55

Oh that's written on my spoiled ballot paper - in purple and green writing.

Please don't spoil your ballot, no one from the labour party is going to see it (unless the vote is close). If its not close it'll just get rejected by the counters who frankly don't give a monkeys.

They will only get "seen" if the vote is so close as to warrant close inspection, we had several down to one vote in our ward - then they get scrutinised but otherwise no.

Flowerly · 30/04/2023 14:28

Can people on here stop telling intelligent women what to do with their vote FFS?

Viviennemary · 30/04/2023 14:30

He probably means go and discuss it with somebody that is interested in that issue, i wouldn't have thought ot was something the local council get involved in.

He sounds like a keeper.

@weightymatters73 already done so I can't change it, a lot of spoiled ballots has to send a message, on its own mine won't, but when there are more spooled votes than not they will have to take notice.

Honestly, they just get put to one side. No one will examine them from the political parties, they may get looked at by the election officials but only to ensure they are properly spoiled and not actual votes.

I've been quite involved in the process in the past and you are better off voting for someone else to make your point!

I had avisit from our local labour councillors, one man and one woman.
The lady seemed to agree with me when I raised the safe spaces for women issue, she said she had young daughters and was concerned herself.
The male councillor brushed me off with Im not too sure of all this stuff, Ive not given it much thought and his defence was that they campaign on local issues so don't really focus on kier starmers views on female biology.

rose69 · 30/04/2023 15:29

All spoilt ballot papers are
Counted. The candidates get together with the returning officer and look at the reason that each one is spoilt and that is recorded. There tends to always be one ejaculating cock and now a growing number of ones raising the trans issue. Any paper that does not have a vote on it is recorded as such. Candidates may read what is written but returning officer goes thro the papers pretty quickly especially if there are no marks against any of the candidates.

mumda · 30/04/2023 15:29

@Iltakethat no but all the candidates at the count get shown them.

GCAcademic · 30/04/2023 15:38

I live in a very rural area which has some quite specific issues (farmers unable to survive, pockets of poverty, excessive housebuilding on green belt land). Labour are fielding a 23-year old transwoman from the university city 30 miles away whose entire focus is on trans rights. It feels like Labour are just laughing at voters at this stage.

PurpleBugz · 30/04/2023 15:48

Some of us women should stand independently in future should we not?

Kelly j Keene is doing it. Can we join her party?

Whereabouts are you in the country roughly? This sounds familiar...

😂 maybe labour doesn't actually want to win? Or they are just incredibly out of touch, resent the electorate and think that we're thick?

Crouton19 · 30/04/2023 17:13

all parties put first time candidates (for parliament at least) in unwinnable seats to give them a test run of campaigning and if they hold up (but obvs don’t win) then one year they will get a turn at a better seat. Some places the parties also just know they will never win but need to allow voters to have the option to protest vote. So yes, the mismatched candidate may well be deliberate.

Sausagenbacon · 30/04/2023 17:21

I agree with the rest of your post OP, but this is nonsense (and, frankly, impossible). As voters, we give our representatives a mandate to govern. That doesn't mean you have to agree with everything they do.

Quit telling women what to do with their vote. It does not help, it just pisses off women.
You do your vote your way, we will do our votes our way. So long as we dont break the law we're gold

Well, be pissed by all means.

Spoiling the ballot means nothing and passes a message to no one. It's a wasted vote.

Women fought for the right to vote.

Flowerly · 30/04/2023 17:37

Spoiling your ballot is an act of protest and is still a 'vote'. I think that the suffragettes would approve.

GoodChat · 30/04/2023 18:23

Women fought for the right to vote.

Precisely, the right to vote. Not for compulsory voting.

MidgeHardcastle · 30/04/2023 18:30

But did you ask the same question of the Tory candidate? It seems everyone is talking about Labour not knowing what a woman is but I haven't seen a response from a Tory candidate yet or even an mp.
