Yet again they've bowed to the transactivist bullies.

Writing to their principal now - absolutely sick of this nonsense. Imagine what it must be like dealing with these students.

Edinburgh Uni has gone off the rails. There is a disgraceful professor involved in conspiracy theories who also tried to pass intel to Russia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_McKeigue

Once again, shocking but not surprising. The University of Edinburgh should be ashamed of its failure to facilitate the showing - it's hardly like they didn't know what to expect after their initial pathetic attempt was cancelled.

loislovesstewie · 27/04/2023 12:12

What I also find worrying is that in a few short years they will be in the work place. How will they cope?

Childrenofthestones · 27/04/2023 12:16

They are no longer students. Their are highly valued clients. Therein lies the problem.

Hagosaurus · 27/04/2023 12:36

Edinburgh uni - another one to cross off dc’s application list 🙄

TheBiologyStupid · 27/04/2023 12:38

I suspect that some of those "highly valued clients" will never enter the world of work as the rest of us know it.

Norma27 · 27/04/2023 12:39

My dc was thinking of looking at Edinburgh. Unfortunately we now won’t make any of the open days as a result of their action towards females. I will not assist in dc going to such a misogynist university.

I'm so pissed off with them. I studied philosophy there in the 90's. The idea of being a philosophy student at Edinburgh now is utterly laughable.

FrancescaContini · 27/04/2023 15:22

Shocking. Another university crossed off the list…

And the menacing, black-balaclava’d person standing in front of the rainbow flag - why don’t you want to show your face?

Yes, all those differences of opinion must be so triggering for them.

xxuserxx · 27/04/2023 15:57

It's not just (some) students, it's (some) staff as well; the local UCU branch supported the protest/cancellation (https://twitter.com/ucuedinburgh/status/1651262183869759495) and the Staff Pride Network took part in it (https://twitter.com/LauraAlderman_/status/1651270053793353734/photo/4).

Jeremy Balfour MSP has tweeted he is writing to Edinburgh uni about this. Such poor optics for Edinburgh uni - do they really think shutting down free speech is a good look?

loislovesstewie · 27/04/2023 16:45

I think that I would be inclined to tell them that they were triggering me if they started their nonsense.

MishyJDI · 27/04/2023 17:42

Bigotry is bigotry. Was then, is now.

Yes you can show the film. Expect push back. That is the right of people to protest.

Did you watch the film? I did. It talks about the clashing rights and demands for rights, i.e., that 'woman' can't be both 'an adult female human being' and an abstract gender identity anyone can have. It also asks how we can do feminist work against sexism and misogyny if the latter approach is not to be ever criticised.

I would have thought that universities are the very places where such topics should be discussed.

Trying to silence that debate will not work, but proving that the GC concerns will be taken into account or won't happen would help. And that means actual open and courteous debates.

desiringtoremainsane · 27/04/2023 20:09

So... I'm a student at Edinburgh Uni. One of those mature paying out of pocket types. In the standard feedback survey in response to a question about whether I was proud to be a UoE student I put links to news about the first event, and then the election of the Robyn Woof. I'm not sure what else to do. The university says they think there should be the freedom to organise this event, then does nothing to actually prevent intimidation and physically blocking access. Any ideas?

God, the UCU is a joke. Clearly identifying as a union whilst failing to do the one job it’s supposed to do.

No they couldn't show the film. The men's rights activists, enabled by a supposedly august university, won't allow women the right of association.

In the recent election statements many campaigning for UCU positions affirmed how they support ‘trans rights’ and one candidate was a TW. Plus, I believe, but don’t know for sure, that there are personal relationships for senior UCU personnel so it wouldn’t be unsurprising that all came into play in a formal organisational approach to these issues.

PurpleBugz · 27/04/2023 21:04

Found this. She is saying separate from the trans topic the uni protects sexual predators- both students and staff

"i’m the women’s officer with the edinburgh university students association.

edi uni is trending atm because of the cancelled adult human female screening, so i want to take this opportunity to say that women ARE NOT SAFE at edinburgh university

a thread 🧵 for those concerned"

You are right, it's not about bathrooms. It's about the moral right of female people to their historic name, to the rights and protections they fought for in the face of systemic patriarchal oppression, to self define as female, to own their own history and speak their own reality in their own words, under their own name.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 27/04/2023 21:11

@FlirtsWithRhinos that is beautiful and so very true

Circethemagician · 27/04/2023 21:20

Another University off our shortlist….

Is there a way to find out which Universities are more tolerant of allowing debate? We are planning our university visits at the moment.
