Irish Eurovision band sack team member for saying a male rapist is not a woman

Ian Banham - the creative director for the Irish Eurovision Song has been sacked by the other band members because he wrote a tweet calling out the press for referring to a male rapist as a ‘she’.

The band have issued this statement:

Wild Youth is a band that stands for unity and kindness. Our song represents our beliefs as a band. We have cut all ties with lan Banham and will not have him on or near our team or Eurovison journey. We are so sorry for anyone offended by his comments.

They are in effect sacking their band mate and they defending a rapist’s right to be called she’ and they say they stand for ‘kindness’.
There is a backlash, I wonder how much support they will get for this.

I'm not on Twitter so I'm not going to say it myself but i wish someone would say:

THIS is the clash between women's rights and trans rights! A logical conclusion of self-ID being beyond discussion in every case is rapists in women's prisons. In fact, why wouldn't ALL biologically male rapists self-ID as a woman? Which is a massive safeguarding risk to vulnerable women and which most sane, compassionate women are not ok with. Rather than name-calling, can we come up with a process to deal with these situations that works for everyone?

Quite.

Every predator in the land can do it.

It will be a thing. All rapists are women.

There is a bit of info in the bbc article linked upthread

The BBC article Eurovision 2023: Ireland's Wild Youth cut ties with creative director after transgender posts only states:

Ireland's Eurovision act Wild Youth have cut ties with their creative director over comments made on social media relating to transgender people.

Screen grabs circulated on Twitter of Ian Banham's account referring to transgender women as men in posts.

Suggests it is directly related to “transphobic” comments and doesn’t give any context either. No mention of anything Andrew Tate related as far as I can see?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 26/04/2023 09:38

I really think that people don't know what 'kind' means anymore.

It's come full-circle to mean 'do as we say, or else': the exact opposite of the 'traditional' understanding of the word. Isn't it amazing how many words nowadays are used to either mean the long-understood meaning OR the exact opposite? I wonder if we'll be having any black snow this Christmas.

How can you possibly identify as a woman whilst using your penis as a weapon…

I was going to say the same thing. If we're so determined to 'be kind' to the rapist (not so much to his victim), the least we can do is to respect his explicitly clear intentions.

Anybody can wear a dress, grow their hair or paint their nails, but only a male person can rape; so by intolerantly refusing to acknowledge the explicitly clear extreme marker of his identity that he has chosen to signal, those who are insisting on calling this man 'she' are 100% being nasty, intolerant, uninclusive bigots.

If they have any conscience or sense of justice at all, the band will obviously need to sack themselves and let the kind, tolerant Ian perform solo.... or is it too late to invite John Lydon back to make up a double act?

They won’t have Ian Banham near them?

what do think will happen?

They might be infected by his hurty thoughts.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 26/04/2023 09:44

In fact, why wouldn't ALL biologically male rapists self-ID as a woman?

Why even go to the bother of doing that? If we categorically ARE whatever we claim to identify as, 'apparent' criminals (you know, the ones who have left unequivocal evidence and were witnessed doing what they are accused of) simply need to identify as not having committed any crimes.

Then, any evil, bigoted, phobic judge who refuses to respect and validate their stated self-identity can be cancelled, smeared across the media and maybe thrown into the prison themselves instead.

They could go for a belt-and-braces approach and also identify as 9 years old, just to make it abundantly clear that they are under the age of criminal responsibility, even if they had done the crime that they have identified out of having done.

40 year old "youths". Poor deluded fuckers, on every level.

AutumnCrow · 26/04/2023 06:58

‘Wild Youth’ look like a bunch of 30 year old middle class dude bros who drink latte with protein sprinkles made from handcrafted Kerry seaweed.

😂😁😍

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 26/04/2023 09:49

If Ian was the creative director, does that mean that all rights to the production and choreography of the act belong to him? Even if not, surely the band wouldn't want to be associated in any way with the creative output of such a damaged individual who thinks that a man is a man?

I can't think of any other scenario in which the producer of a phenomenally popular work has been personally smeared, doxxed, flamed and cancelled by people who are conveniently still willing to get richer off the back of her work....

Band: Names itself 'Wild Youth'
Also Band: The most conformist behaviour imaginable.

nailed it

anotherside · 26/04/2023 10:00

Isn’t the tweet factually incorrect to state he was being sent to a woman’s prison though? I browsed a few newspaper articles reporting the case from the time he made that tweet 28/29th March, and they all clearly state he’s been convicted and being sent to a male prison.

While I agree he should be sent to a males prison, I don’t think twisting the facts to stir things up is the way to win any debate, rather it just allows your opponent to paint you as dishonest and question your motives.

ArabeIIaScott · 26/04/2023 10:04

Being 'kind' is now seen as an identity. It's about how you see yourself, not how you treat other people. The traditionally crucial factor of considering other people, the impact of your actions and interactions, just doesn't come into it.

So, being 'kind' means declaring that you are kind, chanting certain approved mantras, and performative displays of the correct behaviour.

Real kindness can be very difficult. You might get hurt. You might have to empathise with the rape victim, acknowledge her pain. You might have to witness real suffering.

Far easier to wave some nice pastel flags and shout about how horrible someone else is. Far more fun. Far more gratifying. Far more invigorating.

anotherside · 26/04/2023 10:07

Ireland has undergone a wild social transformation in the past 30/40 odd years which many in the UK probably don’t realise. Much of it basically a big kickback against the Catholic Church and associated “conservative” values. So the backdrop of the debate is slightly different than in the UK. As others mention, it’s also very keen to continue to align itself politically with the dominant ideology of the EU, as it is a small, geographically isolated country with a smallish gdp (albeit one which has transformed from poverty to affluence) and it correctly sees the UK, its big neighbour, as fairly untrustworthy (see Brexit) and not aligned with its long term interests.

IWilloBeACervix · 26/04/2023 07:29

I’m not surprised they’re upset and offended. If people start referring to that transwoman as a man then the next step down the slippery-slope is to start referring to Wild Youth as Wild Old Blokes.

Be kind. They self identify as youthful and being wild and crazy.

This appears to be the Andrew Tate connection. I have no idea what Banham's intention was, but it couldn't have been to celebrate Tate getting out of jail as the tweet was Tate complaining about his lack of freedom. Banahm liking that could have been a sign of sympathy towards Tate or a sign that he likes that Tate was not free.

Just waiting for the photos of Kirsty, Billy and Owen all wearing 'Wild Youth' T-shirts.

AmuseBish · 26/04/2023 10:21

This is precisely why I literally don't understand what "trans" is. If raping, using your penis is considered "living as a woman" then literally anything is, and everyone in the world is living as a womam, as there are no criteria.

RocketPanda · 26/04/2023 10:22

First time I have clapped eyes on Wild Youth. I was expecting a bunch of youngsters not a middle aged cohort who come across like they are still harking back to their glory days of winning Longitude tickets on TodayFM when they were in third year. That blonde fella would shift himself at the end of the disco.

Fair enough, I get the pushback against the Catholic Church, the UK/Brexiteers etc. - but why have they randomly decided to transfer their wrath and opprobrium from that on to the female half of the population?

Mummytolittleones92 · 26/04/2023 10:26

Shhhh you silly (cis) wimbins, we’ve been told to show kindness to this rapist by a bunch of ‘desperate to stay relevant, so woke it hurts’ bore offs. You can clearly tell by the mugshot, that’s a fellow wimbin! Nothing to see here, nothing at all oh no.
