The defence in those murder trials is not one of consent, it's lack of intent. Also, if found not guilty of murder the men are still guilty of manslaughter and sentenced accordingly.

The point is by law you can't consent to being harmed. This case shows that - the man who was mutilated actively engaged in that, profiled from it and is still being prosecuted.

In the care of the killed women, men are claiming because the women consented to being choked/beaten, it was not intentional that they died.

You can't legally consent to be choked or assaulted and death is an entirely foreseeable consequence of lots of types of violence so its ridiculous men can use this defence and get a lighter sentence.

It will be interesting to see what sentences these men get and whether it is comparable to manslaughter sentencing

Coincidentally, my fella was watching am old episode of QI yesterday (Gothic). There was a bit about a town in Florida that had an epidemic of 'accidents', requiring traumatic amputation. Seems to have been insurance fraud. Mostly men, fancy that!

It is an obvious feature of the case so the defence would be most negligent if it didn't mention it. In the case of McCarthy v R , the injured person's consent was sufficient to put the case into the lowest culpability category. Harm would be the highest category, I'd have thought.

So, with early guilty pleas, I'd reckon they're looking at 4-5 years. Out in 2 years.

Yes, the foreseeability is at the crux as to the question of intent. The more obvious it is to the jury that death would result - and therefore the more likely that the same thought would have occured to the defendant (being of sound mind) - then the more likely they would be to return a guilty verdict to murder.

I’m not sure - 3 of them are being held on remand, 2 have plead guilty and the others are yet to plead - I reckon the CPS is offering some sort of deal for the more minor players in return for them testifying against the big 3.

There is a lot more money in this case (news reports say £200,000) than in Mac’s case (I’d be surprised if Mac charged even as much as a grand, but perhaps it’s in the court doacs somewhere?) plus there is the additional sexual component, plus the broadcast/distribution of images aspect

Simultaneous arrests were made in England, Scotland & Wales and it’s supposedly a specialist investigations unit so a lot of public funds must be being thrown at this case?

There is a charge relating to making and distributing an image of a minor - does anyone know if that could include a 15/16 year old? Only the alleged offences start from 2016 and one of the accused is only 22 now so I’m hoping (wrong word really but you know what I mean) that he’s the (former) minor and no additional children or adolescents have been harmed. Obvs I’d really prefer no minors were harmed at all…
