A vehicle doesn't need to be insured if it's kept off the road and not used. If the vehicle isn't insured then it cannot be taxed. But the vehicle doesn't need to be taxed so long as its declared as off the road (SORN). But if the declaration isn't made then there can be a penalty or even prosecution and a fine.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 21/05/2023 13:56

So what we're saying is:

The SNP paid out over £100k for a motor home.
The motor home was taken to the General Secretary's mother's house and parked on the drive for two years.
The motor home wasn't insured and may not have been taxed.
A SORN may or may not have been obtained, but if it wasn't, the motor home should have been insured and taxed.
The Treasurers didn't know it had been purchased.
Nobody else at the SNP knew about it either.
It had been intended as a battle bus, although it isn't a bus, and would not have been able to carry round a large team of staff and journalists, like a, you know, real bus.
It was never decorated with SNP slogans, as you might have expected a battle bus substitute to be.

I am no longer even remotely surprised that they have made such an abysmal mess of getting new ferries built and into service. I am quite surprised that it's taken this long for things to unravel.

Of course the competent and professional organisation would need to know that it owned the asset to be able to insure it. I understand that the last two SNP treasurers have denied any knowledge of the purchase.

But yet they knew about Murrell's £100k loan coming in a few months after? Funny that.

lechiffre55 · 21/05/2023 14:42

Can I add 2 more cents into the "BattleBus". That campervan has a driver seat and a passenger seat like most vehicles. Any other seats inside must have 2 point seatbelts if additional passengers want to travel inside. This model seems to have a couch seat in the back which is not suitable for passengers while driving. It's illegal for anyone other than the driver and a single passenger to ride in this vehicle.
That makes it a lot less Bussy than your average car which is legal for 4, 5 at a squeeze adults.
This "Battlebus" is less suitable for moving campaign staff around than your average car.

A vehicle either needs to be taxed and insured (you can't tax it without a valid insurance certificate or cover note) or declared off road by a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN). If you SORN it, you can't use it or keep it on a public road. It can be kept on a private driveway.

Shelefttheweb · 21/05/2023 17:41

Getting insurance and tax sorted should take a matter of minutes. Leaving it stationary on the drive for two years, on the other hand, will mean frozen brakes, dead batter, flat patches on tyres, plus I guess potential other issues (air conditioning? Oil?) which would require loading onto back of a pickup truck and taking it to a garage to get fixed.

guinnessguzzler · 21/05/2023 18:28

@Shelefttheweb Much cheaper to get the fuzz to pick it up for you then 😂

Aww. When it appears on the auction site it may not be such a bargain after all.

Surely it's Competent Responsible And Professional.

Surely it's Competent Responsible And Professional.

The pedant in me wants to insert a comma between Competent and Responsible.

For the avoidance of doubt, I wish to make it clear that I have no evidence that the SNP is either competent or professional.

ArabellaScott · 21/05/2023 22:36

My inner pedant salutes you, Janes. I was trying to make the acronym clearer.

Sorry, it's getting a bit late. Didn't spot the CRAP acronym. Neat.

why would she get points and a fine? She isn’t the registered keeper.

Ah, I've obviously misunderstood, I thought that it had been done in her name, for whatever reasons of avoidance.

EpicChaos · 22/05/2023 00:44

Maybe they intended getting the insurance via nanna Murrells Littlewoods catalogue but the weekly rate was too much for them to unweave out of the accounts?

Back in the day we had an insurance man come round weekly to collect my mum’s life insurance payment - she gave him coins and he recorded it in his little book.

So maybe Nana Murrell’s insurance fella just forgot to write it down?

@EmotionalSupportHyena Yeah, my mum and my grandma had the visits from the man from the Pru, I can still picture him, nice bloke that wore a wig lol.

I do remember when at least one catalogue company used to offer insurance though, including car insurance but your idea could well be right :-D

The man from the Pru!

We used to get the "Provi Wife," her husband used to drive her to the houses of borrowers and see her to the door.

The Sunday Mail can also reveal that First Minister Humza Yousaf supported a bid by disgraced Linden to become an MP – after the party was first warned of his behaviour. Yousaf, then justice secretary, endorsed Linden as a candidate for Westminster in 2019 and said he would “make an outstanding MP”.

How can Humdinger Useless stay in office after that?
