Yes, I know the consensus view Foreversearch, just really hoping against hope that starmer isn’t backing himself into an misogynistic, unelectable corner

cherriestort · 05/04/2023 18:31

Brilliant, thank you Kemi!

Keir, when are you going to recognise women's rights?

Slothtoes · 05/04/2023 18:36

I do agree that the EQA changes are really important - not least because presumably that means we won’t have to ask Parliament to comb back through other legislation that uses gender, where the meaning is sex.

I just think GRA reform has to be part of the bundle. If EqA reform is quick could there be pressure put on the Tories to do it before the GE then? If they’re serious? With a commitment promised to look at GRA if they win?

Noicant · 05/04/2023 19:29

Hopefully it was also represent a step change in the way the political class look at womens votes. Also while I’m sure many politicians are opportunistic the reality is female MP’s their friends, sister, children and mums are also affected by the erosion of sex based rights. There will be a few who are GC for exactly the same reasons as women on these boards, regardless of political party.

QueenHippolyta · 05/04/2023 19:34

The answer is Kellie-Jay's political party. If women band together as a large voting block we'll get what we want
It's putting others first, 'being kind' that sadly got us here.
Women need to be strong, single-minded and selfish in politics.

twitterexile · 05/04/2023 19:44

Is she actually launching a party?

JemimaTiggywinkles · 05/04/2023 20:25

If the Tories think this is a vote winner they’ll spin it out until the GE. They might try to get it through quick and play the “see, we care about women” card, but I honestly think that’d be less effective (electorally) than hanging fire. But even that decision will depend on Starmer. If it looks like he’d follow through they’ll go for the second option (ie “he says he will care about women but we just proved we do”) but if he equivocates they’ll choose the first option.

RealityFan · 05/04/2023 20:42

All the way through this most mind bending of culture wars (for me, a decade of creeping, horrifying awareness, peaked so badly in 2022), I've hung onto my belief in humans.

Not that they'll never make mistakes, but that they'll usually work to rectify them.

If you're gonna ditch Christianity as a teen, then you have to believe in people.

And this belief really has been tested to near destruction. Lia Thomas eg, anyone?

But my spirits are up, the tide is turning, exemplified by LBC chief buffoon James O'Brien spitting out "Badenoch's Law" earlier today...he's on the wrong train.

Once the EHRC recommendations on biological sex are accepted, Starmer will fall into lockstep, he'll have no alternative.

And I think Mumsnet GC feminists can start to at least to consider that both main parties are irrevocably moving to at least a minimum position we can all accept.

Indeed, the Labour Party's initial response is heartening.

Once they're on board, the air finally comes out of the TRA football, and we'll have clarity on the big issues.

So, sport, political will, then all that will be left is the influence on gender in schools, that's where Safe School Alliance and Miriam Cates MP come in, with Sunak promising this review.

It's the most positive I've felt by far since the whole decline in our public life first came to my attention.

I want some of your confidence RealityFan
I really really hope you’re right. Once one party starts saying they will be doing the right thing there could be a positive race to the top (rather then bottom) of promising if not guaranteeing women’s rights.

I am just worried that we have just one year with parties wanting our votes until the 2024 GE and in that time we have to absolutely all totally go for it. With all parties, in all parts of the UK. We need to lock down as much as possible while we can. If we have a Tory win with a much smaller majority and Labour doesn’t come on side they won’t be able to legislate for women. If we have a Labour win and they haven’t come on side they’ll just make any excuse not to touch these issues and it could be many years until we get any change.

I agree that maximum pressure needs to be applied, until the pips squeak, especially on Labour.

But I contend that this EHRC declaration today is the narrow path to a safe landing for Starmer.

However if somehow Labour miss an open goal from point blank range, they will show themselves unworthy of power.

Slothtoes · 05/04/2023 22:12

I think you’re totally right about this being a completely respectable way out. Come on Kier..

twitterexile · 05/04/2023 22:30

Sorry but I predict that this is what will happen.

Bláthannabuí · 05/04/2023 23:03

Worth sending Rishi emails & trying to get a link to him. He has two little girls to future proof as well as all the other little girls in the UK.
I seriously doubt Rishi would be happy to let his little girls share dressing rooms with men.

QueenHippolyta · 05/04/2023 23:24

Yes @twitterexile Kellie-Jay is launching the Party for Women.

About politics. In the US women are majority supporters for the Democratic Party. Pres. Obama and the Democrats had the votes to pass a Federal abortion law. They didn't and look what happened.
Moral: Ladies make the Party give you what they promised BEFORE you vote.

Well, that would be one of the greatest political faux pas of all time.

This is not trying to balance Remain v Leave, where literally communities were on knife edges, especially in non city regions, in poorer parts of the UK.

This is not balancing the 52/48 referendum result. This is re restablishing the dynamic of the moderate vast majority over the tyranny of a tiny tiny minority, which somehow has their voice amplified artificially well beyond its relevance.

If Starmer truly can't tack to the EHRC recommendations which Sunak will make law before the GE, then it's as cliquey a force as the pro Brexit radicals in the Tory Party have been.

Cattenberg · 06/04/2023 00:06

Just so you know, a rival petition on the government’s petitions website is being widely shared today, and what was a small number of signatures is increasing rapidly. This petition asks the government NOT to change the Equality Act.

Boiledbeetle · 06/04/2023 00:19

Current poll results from the OPs link to the Times 3630 votes 94% yes!

Kemi is on the case!

There was a previous one too.

To my mind it shows that the existing Equality Act has not been able to balance rights as intended, and that women’s rights as females have not been protected by the exceptions as they were supposed to have been, and that is why trans activists don’t want it to be made clear that the protected characteristic “Sex” is biological.

Bláthannabuí · 06/04/2023 07:53

@ScrollingLeaves is there a petition that I can sign to change the equality act? I haven't read the thread but I'll sign & whatsapp to all my friends & family.

Slothtoes · 06/04/2023 08:30

OK hope I’m not treading on ScrollingLeaves toes but I am just going to leave it here as I have it handy: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/petitions_noticeboard/4758082-petition-to-update-the-equality-act-thread-3

Bláthannabuí · 06/04/2023 08:33

Thank you, went to sign but I'm not a UK resident, I live in Irelsbd so I can't buy I will send on to all my friends & family in the UK now via WhatsApp
Cheering you guys on from accross the water x

Slothtoes · 06/04/2023 08:38

And I will add this one because personally I can’t see what the GRA will be for if in future EqA is making it default that you can’t change biological sex to get into single sex spaces.

so far the EHRC and government are adamant that GRA will remain as a route to change legal sex which to me just says that things are not as clear cut as they might seem for women’s rights if EqA is made clear that biological sex and gender identity are separate entities but the GRA is unchanged

Slothtoes · 06/04/2023 08:39

Solidarity with you in Ireland Flowers

Ofcourseshecan · 06/04/2023 10:17

The big change here would be that services would be able to routinely use the single-sex exceptions already in the equality act to maintain single-sex spaces and single biological sex. They wouldn't have to do a potentially costly careful balancing exercise each time to avoid unlawful discrimination. That is a huge win for women who want, need and run single-sex services.

This is the big thing, for me. I’d prefer a requirement for single-sex spaces, rather than an allowable exemption. But this is better than the present mess.

Cattenberg · 06/04/2023 19:02

The rival petition has jumped from what - 12k?, 15k? to over 60k in just a few days. That’s weird as it took ages to get to 12k. I wonder when the parliamentary debate will be?
