Guy Pearce apologises for comments about trans acting roles

Explained pretty much in this article. I think what he posted was perfectly reasonable.

"Australian actor Guy Pearce has issued a lengthy apology after sparking a social media firestorm with a now-deleted tweet about transgender acting roles.
The 55-year-old, who famously played a drag queen in 1994's The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, came under fire for questioning whether or not only transgender actors should be allowed to take on trans roles.

The Emmy-winning actor tweeted on Monday night: 'A question - if the only people allowed to play trans characters are trans folk, then are we also suggesting the only people trans folk can play are trans characters?"

Nobody remains ideologically pure for long.

One must repent for wrongthink

There is no amount of reasonable or logic which appeases the mob.

He might have a Navratilova moment and his next remarks on the topic will be less conciliatory.

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 29/03/2023 22:09

Never apologise, Paul.

They won’t stop now.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 29/03/2023 22:11

That oppressed, bullied and vulnerable minority again wielding a level of power many governments would love to have. Forcing people to recant on their logical, evidenced opinions.

NemoandDoris · 29/03/2023 22:11

But his logic is spot on. I mean do you have to be a vampire to play a vampire, no. And many people have played that part.

eddie (suzy) Izzard had no problem playing a man when it suited them.

Whaeanui · 29/03/2023 22:14

I really liked that Priscilla movie at the time and I think he’s a good actor, I love that he went back for neighbours and could give enough time for a proper storyline, none of the other big stars could or did. I wish he hadn’t caved to this. Always seemed a nice guy.

RegainingTheWill2023 · 29/03/2023 22:18

Where is the outrage at men (straight and gay) playing women, particularly on stage
Edna Turnblad in Hairspray, Miss Trunchbull in Mathilda, Miss Hannigan in Annie etc.

KatMcBundleFace · 29/03/2023 22:18

His act of contrast contrition is painful.

Poor Guy, tell them to go fuck themselves

User534 · 29/03/2023 22:20

I think his letter of apology is okay. He doesn't backtrack on his opinion. In fact he repeats his opinion, which is that any actor should be able to play any part - that actors shouldn't be expect to restrict themselves to playing parts which are similar to their own "lived experience".

sunshinesupermum · 29/03/2023 22:20

He was right. Shame he backtracked.

Whaeanui · 29/03/2023 22:23

He sticks to his position on acting, but refers to trans as ‘an already harassed minority’ which makes me 🤔

Boiledbeetle · 29/03/2023 22:39

He should have ignored the whinging.

Izzard does however have terrible trouble playing the role of a woman. You'd think with his acting skills he'd do a better job of it!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 29/03/2023 22:48

It's only logical, what he originally asked - no reasonable person could possibly disagree with it. Otherwise, it's just more of "What's mine is exclusively mine; and what's yours is.... mine as well". This is a level of fairness that most 5yo children can easily learn to understand.

Are they going to come after David Tennant next - for his audacity in playing Dennis Nilsen, when he himself hasn't even murdered one person?

😂😂😂Yes! He plays male characters surprisingly well - can't think why it seems to come so naturally to him!

Boiledbeetle · 29/03/2023 23:09

👽 sci fi shows are going to be really hard to cast if you can only act what you are!

And the next performance of Cats or the Lion King doesn't bear thinking about.

Will murder victims have to be played by actual deceased actors?

Fenlandia · 29/03/2023 23:10

Maya Forastater once did a Twitter thread of the most cringeworthy, penitent apologies, if anyone remembers it? It was like reading something out of a medieval cult.

ROFL at David Tennant bit!

Boiledbeetle · 29/03/2023 23:13

So many questions. Looks at audience. Exits stage left.

Boiledbeetle · 29/03/2023 23:14

It's alright I was acting like a wanker then and as I am one it's fine!

So chilling. What he said in the first place was perfectly reasonable.

twelly · 29/03/2023 23:46

I think this another example of shouting down and intimidating those who views you disagree with - of course people can disagree but we live in a society where we should not be shutting down people who think differently and hold different opinions
