Explained pretty much in this article. I think what he posted was perfectly reasonable.

"Australian actor Guy Pearce has issued a lengthy apology after sparking a social media firestorm with a now-deleted tweet about transgender acting roles.
The 55-year-old, who famously played a drag queen in 1994's The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, came under fire for questioning whether or not only transgender actors should be allowed to take on trans roles.

The Emmy-winning actor tweeted on Monday night: 'A question - if the only people allowed to play trans characters are trans folk, then are we also suggesting the only people trans folk can play are trans characters?"

The transgender lefties want & advocate for free speech at all costs. Unless of course you argue against them, then they will will shut you up & make you sorry you opened your mouth to begin with.

I often think that multitudes of people must live in a real-life version of the Springfield Retirement Castle - where Grandpa Simpson resides - with its big sign outside saying "Thank you for not mentioning the outside world".

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 29/03/2023 23:57

Ugly Sisters needed for pantomime -must be played by unfortunate-faced genuine siblings

Scarily, I can actually see that becoming some kind of issue in the future for the perpetually-offended self-appointed victims who like to centre themselves in everything and get people cancelled - once the roles are in the sights of people other than a couple of big hairy blokes who know that they are blokes and are under no illusions of ever being mistaken for Doris Day and Katharine Hepburn.

Speechless. As PP said, it is like a medieval cult. Saving himself from the heretic's flames.

Maya Forastater once did a Twitter thread of the most cringeworthy, penitent apologies, if anyone remembers it? It was like reading something out of a medieval cult.

Oh please please link me to that 🙏🙏😂

Rightsraptor · 30/03/2023 13:03

Oh Guy. Never, ever apologise to them.

I don’t think he’s backing down so much as apologizing for using trans as the example. He doesn’t seem to have backtracked on his opinion that identity shouldn’t dictate the roles an actor can play. I’ve seen this argument before but with writers and authors being told they can’t write certain minority viewpoints if they’re not of that minority themselves. I think he’s 100% right on that issue and I hope he holds his ground.

MarshaMelrose · 30/03/2023 13:42

It was described as a grovelling apology. I don't think it was. I thought it was quite a thoughtful and measured response. However, it does make you think that people who have risen to the top of the acting world don't get many people challenging them. Because what did Guy Pearce think was going to happen when he put out that question on Twitter of all places? I agree with him completely but reasoned debate doesn't happen on twitter so it wasn't the brightest of ideas.

MagpiePi · 31/03/2023 13:22

I don't think he apologised for his original idea, he apologised for using trans people as the example.

The thing that irks me is the re-writing of the narrative that the main characters in the film are now being labelled as trans. As far as I understood, they were all gay men who worked as drag queens, but only the one played by Terence Stamp could be described as trans.
Another example where LGB has been co-opted by the T.

Jaredy · 05/03/2024 22:26

And Izzard continues to play male roles. Once again, men p*ssing all over women's rights AGAIN.

PriOn1 · 06/03/2024 03:28

While I don’t think any apology was needed, what we now have is another person looking completely measured and reasonable, but not backing down on their actual point, which was that the demands being made (about minority parts having to be played by minority actors) are unreasonable.

In effect, he has doubled down, while politely explaining that he’s removing any additional focus on one of the groups making that unreasonable demand.

It absolutely is not a groveling apology.

It will be interesting to see whether his continued insistence that anyone should be allowed to play any part they are capable of, appeases whatever mob were attacking him.

There’s a definite opportunity for sunlight here. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Guy P shouldn't have apologised. It's called acting. Like in Extra's - Sir Ian McKellen explains to Ricky Gervais :

Ian McKellen: "Case in point: Lord of the Rings. Peter Jackson comes to me in New Zealand and says to me: Sir Ian, I want you to be Gandalf the Wizard. And I said to him: You are aware that I am not really a wizard?"

Redpencil99 · 09/03/2024 21:08

I really respected him that role. Plus, where was "trans" in 1994? There were only just gay and lesbian people on the screen at that point (mainstream,eg Friends, Will and Grace.). I suppose Kathleen Turner will be apologising for being Chandler's dad next

Ah, Guy, has no-one explained to you than trans people can do whatever they like, while the rest of us can only stand by and applaud?! (Really liked you in Neighbours btw)

Redpencil99 · 09/03/2024 21:14

Jaredy · 05/03/2024 22:26

I liked him about 20 years ago, in his Dress to Kill and Circle days. Why not be a man and dress up in clothes designed for females? Why not wear makeup?

But what flies in the face is the ultimate fact of Izzard (who had to revert to his birth name because that's what his fame was built on, when he stood for MP) and others just will not accept females' safety is an issue. It's just too much blind insistence to force an agenda.

Onionbelt · 10/03/2024 04:20

Can't help wondering why only Trans should play trans when men can BE women?

Childrenofthestones · 10/03/2024 04:55

Where will this all end?
Reminds me of the old joke about an actor up for the part on Long John Silver.
Agent..." I'm pleased to tell you that you've got the part, it pays 10 grand a week and you start on Tuesday "
Actor..." Jeez, for 10 grand a week I'll start on Monday!"
Agent..." No you cant. Monday you're in hospital getting your leg off "

WhatYouWearing · 10/03/2024 09:13

Are they going to come after David Tennant next - for his audacity in playing Dennis Nilsen, when he himself hasn't even murdered one person?

Ooooh I'd love that petition!

The ugly sisters and long John silver jokes are cracking me up 🤣
