Kate Forbes: 20,559 – 40.7%
Humza Yousaf: 24,336 – 48.2%
Second ballot results
Kate Forbes: 23,890 – 47.9%
Humza Yousaf: 26,052 – 52.1%
Given Humza's support level from most MSPs and the power of the SNP status quo Forbes did a great job. Sturgeon's effective endorsement carried real weight for Humza , BUT the closeness of the result shows her grip on the party was broken. Most importantly it shows the huge divide inside the party. If this election had come before the 30,000 members had left Forbes would have easily won.
Also key to remember Forbes is a really effective minister - she single handily got the SNP finances working better. Humza will have to give her a job if he is sensible. If he does it will serve to unite the party, but also marginalise the TRAs further. If he doesn't she sits on back benches BUT if the SNP do badly in the General election Humza's leadership will come under attack. Humza is badly flawed so the SNP are not likely to do well whatever happens.
Either way pro-woman faction in the party has gained considerable power and in Scotland.
