SNP leadership campaign

Starting this thread because the new SNP leader is due to be announced on Monday afternoon, sometime after 2pm.

Thought we could have a thread of speculation (who's going to win, what they'll do) followed by reactions after they make the announcement.

Underwhelmed. Ash looks miffed. No hug for Humza from her.

guinnessguzzler · 27/03/2023 14:11

It's ... Humza Yousaf. But only on second preferences.

That's weird, isn't it? You'd think Ash's second preferences would go to Kate Forbes.

I apologise, incidentally, for starting two threads with exactly the same name. I'd forgotten about the first one when I started this one!

Let's see if he'll keep digging the hole they got themselves in. If he challenges s35 of the Scotland Act it means more sunlight.
Which is a good thing.

Also, Kate Forbes' vote was pretty high. The schism in the SNP is not going away.

Hold your nerve. This isn't over yet.

littlbrowndog · 27/03/2023 14:19

Jeez yousless

They did split slightly in favour of Forbes, but nowhere near heavily enough to overcome HY 48% on 1st pref.

Regan looks absolutely fuming. What a wee shame.

Yes, Humza is so useless and lacking in integrity that he will simply widen any rifts and divisions that were already there. He cannot say he has the overwhelming support of his party, either.

guinnessguzzler · 27/03/2023 14:19

Agree @bellinisurge which only demonstrates that if you give toxic people / organisations the time and space they will eventually tear themselves apart.

I think he will let GRR drop and blame the lawyers ... like they didn't have access to any legal advice before they pushed it through?!

guinnessguzzler · 27/03/2023 14:21

@RoyalCorgi It's all far too exciting for just one thread 😁

Even if he doesn't decide to drop it it can only bring more daylight to the issue, plus people will be able to see how unhinged and out of touch with public opinion the Greens are.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 27/03/2023 14:23

My preference was for an ineffective leader, so I think I’ve got my wish here

seems a bit rubbish for Scottish people though

SallyLockheart · 27/03/2023 14:24

I thought Humza would win. In the same way that the Tory membership voted for Truss.......

Legality of the GRR Bill and the legitimacy of the S35 order are two entirely separate matters. There is no question over the first, the contention is over whether or not the S35 has been adequately justified.

Thank you for your commentary all. So much more interesting than msm who are just providing the visuals.

Full results - the electorate was 72,169. And 50,494 people voted, meaning there was a turnout of 70%.

There were three spoilt ballot papers.

First ballot results

Ash Regan: 5,599 – 11.1%

Kate Forbes: 20,559 – 40.7%

Humza Yousaf: 24,336 – 48.2%

Second ballot results

Kate Forbes: 23,890 – 47.9%

Humza Yousaf: 26,052 – 52.1%

Given Humza's support level from most MSPs and the power of the SNP status quo Forbes did a great job. Sturgeon's effective endorsement carried real weight for Humza , BUT the closeness of the result shows her grip on the party was broken. Most importantly it shows the huge divide inside the party. If this election had come before the 30,000 members had left Forbes would have easily won.

Also key to remember Forbes is a really effective minister - she single handily got the SNP finances working better. Humza will have to give her a job if he is sensible. If he does it will serve to unite the party, but also marginalise the TRAs further. If he doesn't she sits on back benches BUT if the SNP do badly in the General election Humza's leadership will come under attack. Humza is badly flawed so the SNP are not likely to do well whatever happens.

Either way pro-woman faction in the party has gained considerable power and in Scotland.

Wondering what the vote is today exactly, if it's a done deal?
