Wow! I mean , congratulations Dan! You really are taking gender-non-conformity to the extreme.

Total respect. I mean, c-section, obviously, no?

And is your partner supportive? How exciting. For her to become a dad, that's just ... amazing!

What?

Oh. Oh, I see.

Sorry. Wrong end of the stick.

Erin Darke isn't a household name so she's not on the front page link - the full BBC article headline says 'Daniel Radcliffe and Erin Darke expecting first child'. That seems fair enough to me. Congratulations to them both.

Pick your battles. Picking up and ranting about a non-issue isn't doing us any favours. To the point, I am wondering if this is a reverse.

HUMOUR IS NOT ALLOWED

thatsn0tmyname · 26/03/2023 10:52

Can I just chip on here and say "we are having a baby/ pregnant" really winds me up?

Sassyfox · 26/03/2023 11:05

So men aren’t allowed to be acknowledged when they’re having a child?

If he was getting married it would also just say his name, even though he’s not marrying himself.

The media uses his name so people can click on it.
If they put just his wife’s name then no one would click on it.
If they put both names the headline would be too long.

Stop trying to make an issue out of something when there is none.

In the context of pregnancy, "expecting" has traditionally referred to the state of being pregnant. This is reflected in the Cambridge dictionary definition:
"expect verb (BE PREGNANT)".

Headline writers, pressed for space, are fond of ellipses. This particular one did have a certain irony to it, which the OP highlighted in a humorous way.

There's a difference between 'expecting' with no qualification; and 'expecting a child'.

I think this thread is in poor taste

If that's the bar for threads then most of mm threads would disappear.

Somebodiesmother · 26/03/2023 11:43

Pretty sure he didn't write the headline

‘We are pregnant’ is obviously incorrect but ‘we are having a baby’ I’m fine with.

Do you want parters to only say ‘my partner is pregnant’? Or is there another way you’d word it?

To me that sounds dismissive in a way; like they have no responsibility to either their partner or their unborn child. Like the pregnancy is nothing to do with them.

Eyesofdisarray · 26/03/2023 11:50

Come on it's the menz isn't it??
I half expected this to be about surrogacy

Slothtoes · 26/03/2023 11:52

Its in amazingly poor taste for Radcliffe to turn on the woman who created the work that has defined his entire professional life

Happylittlechicken · 26/03/2023 11:59

Iwonder08 · 26/03/2023 08:23

So just because he disagreed with your trans views he is not allowed to have a child? 'expecting' doesn't mean pregnant..it is a really poor choice of battle to pick.

The point is Daniel believes transwomen are women, and castigated JKR for saying only women could give birth. I think he’s also on the side of “lesbians are bigots if they don’t do dick”. It does therefore seem rather funny that he seems to know as a straight bloke exactly what a woman is when it comes to relationships and creating a family. As they say…. Ally on the streets, transphobe in the sheets 😂😂

LookingOldTheseDays · 26/03/2023 12:13

Greenolivetrees · 26/03/2023 07:59

I'm as terfy as they come but the headline is correct. Pregnant is a biological state, expecting is a mental one. He IS expecting a baby. I'm expecting to go to a farm in an hour...

I agree. The phrase "expectant father" has been around for donkey's years, and no one thinks it means the man is the one carrying the child.

We all know men's role in conception and birth is small compared to women's, but men do become fathers, and when a woman is carrying their child they are expecting a baby.

That's a whole different argument from wether he is expecting a baby though.

Clymene · 26/03/2023 12:17

I actually think 'expecting' when it refers to pregnancy usually refers to women. Men say 'my wife is expecting a baby' or 'we're expecting a baby'. They don't say 'I'm expecting a baby'.

That's what is ridiculous about the headline. The fact that his wife has been cut out altogether.

EsmaCannonball · 26/03/2023 12:17

It must have been exciting for them waiting to see which one got pregnant. It's about 50/50 these days, isn't it?

Clymene · 26/03/2023 12:19

But that is what makes it funny @Somebodiesmother

God this is painful

Arapawa · 26/03/2023 12:20

Come on you disingenuous wassocks...this headline never used to be written. It would have been Daniel Twatcliffe and his partner blah blah blah are expecting.

I thought exactly the same as you OP.

But he didn't write the headline did he?

If you want to criticise DR for what he's said about JKR, or his views on the trans issue - fine.

But personal mudslinging just because his partner is having a baby and an editor chose to write the headline in a certain way is ridiculous, and just looks petty. Of course the headline was going to focus on the most famous half of the couple!

But the headline is in the third person. A man might not say 'I'm expecting a baby' but that isn't the same as saying 'Daniel Radcliffe is expecting his first child'.

Clymene · 26/03/2023 12:28

@PlateBilledDuckyPerson yes it is. I've just done a search of headlines for famous men I can think of with much less famous wives and the wife is always mentioned.

In any event, the reason this is funny is because of the shit about women that Radcliffe comes out with. If he didn't, this wouldn't be funny.
